I own Epiphone, Gibson, Gretsch, Wolf and Guilds and the Guild can hang in with the Gibson very well. i gig a lot with the Guild and it never disappoints at all. I think too many people under rate the Guild without giving them a try and they are missing out. I would take my Guild over the Epiphone any day. Better quality and sound. Epi is good but the Guild gives you a more professional feel.
@bradleyclosson50422 жыл бұрын
Your playing is always good. You don't have to be super technical to sound good. A lot of technical players sound sterile and lack soul. I'd much rather listen to a player like you because you can feel the music. Another great review, thank you!

@williamarthurfenton14962 жыл бұрын
I find there's no correllation between technical skill and feel. Just as many of either have soul, or don't. I mean Angus Young is on guitarist levels pretty average, but he absolutely massacres Joe Satriani who I think is one of the most soulless and tedious players I've ever heard. Ditto with Yngwie Malmsteen. But saying that I think Steve Lukather has tremendous feel and he ain't exactly a slouch. I don't think much of Slash who's another average guitarist as far as technical skill goes, I don't think he's got much feel at all.

Nice honest review. I bought one of these guitars a couple of months ago--second hand but in mint condition( the goodie bag wasn't included though!) I am completely in love with it. I don't mind the finish---it's an all laminate body(in common with most semi's) and doesn't try to hide it. Mine only weighs 6.4lb. I believe they are made in the Samick factory. I've got a 335 and a D'Angelico semi but the Guild has overtaken them both in my affections.
@henrydiaz7202 жыл бұрын
How do they compare with 335s in tone and playability? I want an epiphone SG Special P90 but after seeing this, I want one of these Starfires! Dammit. Now I have to save up twice as much!
@kingstumble2 жыл бұрын
@@henrydiaz720 Playability is on a par with the 335. The neck is thinner but after a few minutes you don't even notice it. Fretwork is perfect. The Starfire is less bright and has a lower output which I assume is down to the Alnico II pickups. My 335 has Alnico V which are more aggressive. Alnico II suit me better as I lean more towards jazz/blues. But they are standard size humbuckers so you can change them easily if you want to. All in all I would thoroughly recommend the Starfire.

He really is unbelievable, at times I was shaking my head in disbelief. A great band to back him up too, they were real top performers, one and all. Hi Colin. Finally it has been sold. 🙂 I didn't understand why it didn't go. My own experience with the Guild Starfire is with the 1 SC, single cut with 20 frets instead of 22 for the DC. I found it a bit flat and decided to give it a good treatment at the first strings' change. So, a good fret polishing, fingerboard oiling and then, after mounting new strings, I followed this advice : lower the pickups and adjust the individual pole pots heights by unscrewing them. There was some white material going out, surely wax. After that, the finger board is gorgeous, the sound of these pickups is now great. A fantastic guitar for the price !

If you love it and plan to keep it, a new wiring harness would work wonders AND send the pickups to Radio Shop for a rewind. They made a video a few years ago showing the rewind process for a set of Starfire HB1 pickups. You would not believe the amount of wax that was in there! Enough to really choke the tone. A proper set of Guild pickups are fantastic and very unique sounding. Enjoy!

Just got one of these today and, your review is spot on with what I found on my example. Superb fret work and feel on mine and I love the flat profile of the neck, weight is just right for it's size and other than some leftover polishing compound in one of the F holes, no real cosmetic flaws that I have found so far. The string height on mine was a little high and the intonation on the 3 bass strings was way off lol. Other than that, I think it would be hard to beat this guitar for $549 US plus a set of 10's to replace the 11's they put on these for whatever reason.

Another great, informative review. If you ever mange to get your hands on a Firefly 338, they are the least expensive 335 alternatives, at around $140.00. They’re surprisingly good for the money.

I played one in local shop, in Emerald Green color and I couldn't put it down. Also it looks much nicer than in Cherry, it almost felt like a Gibson ES 335. Just wish Emerald Green would come without the Bigsby I am not a tremolo fan - way too heavy.. Excellent review, thank you!

"Nice noises coming out of this" AGREE. Looking forward to next weeks episode. I have to say I love Guild guitars. On my Starfire ll MIK the mahogany is covered with black paint that looks and feels like plastic. It feels cheap like you said, but it has mini HB and they sound great. Your Starfire is going on your "very, very cool " wall I'll bet.

Great review, I think for the money it is great, I've played the sister starfire with a single cut - Venetian style I think. For the money it seems dead on and certainly great value for money. I just can't get past the looks of the Starcaster, but that's my personal preference. A shame about the electrics, but opened up they sound ok. I gig with a Boost pedal (made in the UK by BOO pedals - try them, best boost pedal on the market in my opinion). Personally, I'm not bothered for coil spits, but if it comes with that then fair enough. At £430 you can mod the electrics but a great guitar for the money - at this price nothing will be perfect but Indian Rosewood - well there's a huge plus to start with.

You should get your hands on an D’Angelico DC premier. 335 shape. F holes. The tone is incredible. Had it week now. Just needed slight tweak on the action and oiled the frets.. stunning finish. 7.2lbs . Seems to have a lot more clarity than the epiphone 335. Not to dis similar to the riviera with the mini humbuckers. And the D’Angelico has the best headstock . Stunning. I’d recommend you try one. Would make for a great video. Speaking of which enjoyed this as always. This is my go to on a Friday. Great way to start the weekend

Mate, you are the most entertaining, amusing informed (kinda), addictive goitarist on the Web. Really look forward to your additions. Been at this goitaring since 1967 and still learning bits n bobs. Didn't know much about pickup outputs or neck profiles etc. but totally hooked on your presentation method.....info, humor and self deprecation......love it! Still want to see you review the Epiphone Sheraton II Pro and not the tribute version you wheeled out a couple of times lol. It's a TOTALLY different instrument. You can borrow mine if you like, I'll send it down to you. All my guitars (my Les Paul Standard excepting) are main name play/sound alikes and in my opinion perform and look as good,if not better than the named brands. Anyway, coz of you I'm trouble with 'er indoors ' but aint gonna stop me collecting and playing just as long as I can afford it and can still knockout a 12 bar. Thanks.

Cheers man thanks for the kind words and support!... in fact I have owned (and stupidly sold) a Sheraton pro II and totally agree with you. I need another but wish you hadn't reminded me! 😂👍 Hey there are a lot worse things we could be doing eh?... remind the missus of that and you'll be fine! 😎🎸🎸

Hey! A guild! Looking forward to the “rivals” video! I was quite impressed with my starfire I SC. Purchased it because I became tired of waiting for what would have been my 6th Epi Casino (I have issues)… had low expectations, and it is now my go to guitar in the house. Great neck, I like the pickups. Pots and switch are crap and need to be replaced for pro use… but the guitar is better than its price. It is different, decidedly not a 335 or a casino… but a very useful different. Great review. Keep them coming!

Omg thank you for doing this review! Probably one of the best review of this guitar out there! Question, do you think the pickups sound great in person? I’ve heard that the reason why people seem to love or respect guild is that their pickups sound very clean, bright, and very articulate. It’s a very distinctive sound according to them and they just love them for their clarity and the very clean and crisp tone they give.

My first serious acoustic guitar was a 1973 Guild Madeira which was a wood kit gathered in Guild's Connecticut factory and, sent to Japan where it was assembled. I still own and play it! I think it was one of the first attempts for a major US brand to reduce costs using "over seas" assembly? The guitar has a seriously Vee shaped neck and beautifully figured Maple wood (both quilted and Birds Eye), Their Connecticut factory backed up on a great trout stream! Unfortunately, when Fender bought them, they moved the US factory to Southern California. So it goes?

Hi Colin, thanks for this excellent review. Very curious for the comparison with other ES-335 Rivals... Especially curious on which guitar you prefer. I myself am in dubio between the Emily Wolfe Sheraton Stealth by Epiphone, and the Guild Starfire I DC Pelham Blue... Two extremely beauties if you ask me... And both sound amazing... Help!! ;-)
@theguitaristas2 жыл бұрын
Hey Ruben, that reminds me I still need to make the part 2 comparison!... it's coming as soon as I have fixed the Starcaster wiring 😂 So choosing between Stealth and Starfire is tricky 🤔 I rethink the Stealth is the harder rocking darker choice... the Guild for more blues and versatility perhaps? Hope that helps!
@rubenvangansbeke42672 жыл бұрын
@@theguitaristas indeed it helps, thanks Colin! As I play in a party coverband, with a high variety in the playlist, I would think the Starfire would be the better choice for me... Looking forward to part 2!!

Great review and very inspired playing, the guitar does sound very nice. With some upgraded pots I’m sure you’d get a lot more variation out of the tone control. I’m a feel player also, I appreciate technical playing but it’s never been my thing…personally I much prefer to listen to emotive players that aren’t afraid to get a little sloppy and take chances, Page was always a good example of that. The first jam reminded me of VU’s Oh! Sweet Nuthin’, good stuff 😎
