Same here. Played a white one at Guitar Center. It played and sounded great. Ordered a Sonic Gray one from Fender and less than thrilled. Pickups were very loose, not set up right at all. Toggle switch moves north south east and west! 👎 At least there are no sharp frets.

What exactly did you do, if I might ask?
@joeking433 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, I had to level the frets, cut the nut, do the intonation, adjust the truss rod, and adjust the bridge. But I do that on any guitar I get, actually.

Back when I was a guitar teacher I would always set up the guitar for new pupils, playing a badly set up guitar is so miserable and adds to the feeling of fighting the instrument. If you finally manage the pain of fretting notes, you at least want them to sound in tune.

@Sc0teeBe3183 жыл бұрын
I played the standard version of this in a music store and I was even impressed by that. I've had a couple Gibsons and other nice guitars but the Squier did not disappoint. I'm not a huge fan of the very pale looking neck but thats a cosmetic thing. The sound was really good and I was happy the pickups had some brightness to them. They weren't just muddy sounding like I thought they'd be. I've owned a Squier 51 vintage modified for 6 years now which I bought for around the same price point. It has never let me down and sounds great. Squier always seems to get the essentials just right. Good nut, neck, frets, body, and usually pretty decent pickups. I feel like in the $150 price range or lower you get more value from Squier than Epiphone.
@stephenkennaway93263 жыл бұрын
bought a blue one for £109 to see what you get, learners are so lucky to get a guitar as good as this. Back in the day this price point would have been unplayable and just junk. The laugh is its my go to guitar now around the house, as you say every one should own one there for nothing.
@TeleCaster662 жыл бұрын
I don't know if that's really true, at least it didn't used to be. My 1st guitar was a 1969 Fender Mustang bought used in 1981 for $150.00. Great little guitar. Far better in every was to what Fender offers now except for its high end guitars and waaay better than this guitar even though this guitar *will play OK. Back then the pickups were as good as the high-end Lollar or Don Mare or one of those type of pickup maker; the hardware was on a completely different level than anything made today; they used great pots, not thr Chinese junk used in even some of the expensive models today, etc. These guitars, to me, are OK for a beginner but if you grew up playing used 60's and 70's Gibsons and Fenders (they weren't "vintage", they were "used") you know the difference and back then I was buying 1960 Les Paul Jr's for 4 or 5 hundred bucks which was still affordable. These new cheaper guitars need all new electriconics and new hardware to be up to spec and now you've more than doubled the price...

I did not like the guitar at first after purchase, it took few weeks to get in shape, maybe it was the strings or just my lack of feel for grunge at that moment. But something changed from day to day and I realized how simple, great and fun this guitar is. Sometimes it's all we need, no extra features. Soo light, compact, good for short fingers. The cleans are meh, but anything from crunch to hardrock or even metal is fun. I started to like lightweight guitars like Mustang and SG's. I might consider secondary amp for the couch spot comfort :D Thanks for sharing, enjoyable to watch.

Nice review! No wonder the Mustang is so good, it adheres to Leo Fenders first classic design, the Telecaster. Two dynamic pickups on a well made solid body with a maple neck screwed to it, ( I never say bolted cause they’re screws), a foolproof bridge/ tailpiece assembly and a set of reliable machine heads. The fit and finish on Far Eastern made Squier guitars is absolutely amazing, over time things like switches and jack sockets may fail but they’re both easy and cheap to replace and as as you said that little guitar could last a lifetime . I must mention that love the colour and go faster stripes on your example , perfect first guitar.

They always remind me of the first Fender catalogue I ever got back in 1968. I was at school with a chap called Stephen Gilboy and his dad was finance director of Dallas Arbiter, or Arbiter or whatever they were called then. He used to get me strings too :-) The catalogue had all sorts of odd stuff including the range of blackface valve amps and solid state stuff too, photographed on a runway for some reason. Mustang, Duosonic, bass V, Bass VI, Wildwood acoustics and Coronados with wood that had been dyed still in the tree as it were. There was a clear backplate for Strats to protect them from dings - I've only ever seen one of those in real life. There were full on pedal steel guitars and the big old volume pedals that Fender reissued 15 years or so ago. I miss those old pre-internet, catalogue collecting days 😁

I remember Dallas Arbiter, I think they were based not far from me down in Shoeburyness, Essex? Great memories to have those Paul... they were simpler times and things have changed oh so much... all except the gear we covet really as all those things you mention are still popular today, although I've never heard of the Strat backplate. Another great video, the mustang sounds very good. I personally prefer humbuckers or p90s over regular single coils. Most of the time p90s work best for me. It's a beauty for sure and you are correct that the shorter the scale the less tension on the strings. That should be good for beginners without calluses on their fingers, high action and heavy strings have deterred many a beginner. Just keep on keeping on with the wonderful videos, I and I think most everyone are really enjoying these.

i wish squier/fender offered a version with 2 single coils instead. its a great guitar and i actually have one in olympic white but for me its just a practice guitar and i really prefer the look of the singlecoils on a mustang. they offer the super affordable bullets with single coils for strat/tele/jazzmaster, but not for the mustang or jag for some unknown reason

Comparing the quality of budget guitars between now and the 70's and 80's there is really no comparison. Quality has gone up and price has gone down relatively. There is also now so much more choice, the only big US company that's not having a cheaper alternative made abroad as a option is Rickenbacker.

Just discovered this channel, with a review of the Bullet! We bought one for our 15 year old last year, and he is going great guns on it, turning into a proper goth rocker. The soldering on the internals could be better, Tom had a loose connection on his output Jack. But it’s easy to fix and we also replaced the pick guard with a black one, to suit his gothic sensibilities. Indeed he is going to do a music BTEC now, which is a first for our non-musical family. Well, I say non-musical… during lockdown I started picking his Mustang up and noodling on it. I hated the (acoustic)guitar I had when I was 12 and gave up, but this was so easy to learn to play on. Just bought myself a pearl white contemporary Tele… (which I would love to see you review 😉)

Dang it, Colin! I don't want one, but I want one! Your channel must be responsible for the sale of hundreds, if not thousands of guitars. Based on the resistance readings, those pups aren't made as cheaply as one might expect. A lot of inexpensive guitars come with under wound pups with a strong magnet to make up for the lack of windings. Sure, they *might* have ceramic magnets, but so do some pups that Gibson makes. These seem to be made well, which is why they sound good. Cheers!

Gret review! I think I'll pick one up here in the states for my daughter. I got her a Taylor GS Mini, but I think she'll have more fun with the Bullet. The competition models are hard to find over here, but I did find one source that sells them for $199.99 in Lake Placid Blue with Ice Blue Metallic Stripes. Not only will it be fun for her to play, but she'll be the coolest kid on her block.

I love the is guitar. Still playing around a little bit to just get it just right. But right from the box it was great. I took some time and polished the frets and rolled the edges a bit and did a very light sanding to the neck. Put on new tuners and a bridge just for fun, nothing great. But I still love it so might put on a set of locking tuners and a newer bridge and swap the pickups.

I would love to see a review of the Fender Mustang 90. Of course, it's a more expensive guitar, but a Mustang with P90s...how can you resist?!!! Love your content and keep it up - cheers!

Almost two years since this video. I'd just bought an excellent used Bullet Mustang then at a pawn shop and got another there since at a better deal. Still lovin' these guitars and I play them regularly. Everything works great, they stay tuned, there's nothing wrong with the pickups at all. Still a 'get one' recommendation. I guess you'd get the Sonic model now for an equivalent but they're not as nice. No arm or belly cuts.

When I punched in a search and saw yours came up, it was all I needed to see to make up my mind. I didn't watch another!! You're perfectly right 🙂 it's one of the best beginner guitars out there...OR a great mod platform and solid guitar for any seasoned guitar player... As a matter of fact I got my first one ( the Imperial Blue model ) a couple of years ago, followed by the black one and recently a FSR green with racing stripes... They're all so well-made I could have left them alone as is but I repair, design and build guitars for a living so I modified them all in a different way... I've always been a huge fan of Squiers and most of them get played on stage in my local clubs on a regular basis... As ever thank you so much for such a great in-depth review...

1) Chuck the ceramic pickups, put in a pair of $15-20 AlNiCo 5 Fleor or Donlis. 2) Replace the plastic nut with a GraphTech TUSQ. And you got the perfect guitar for beginners with small hands.

Just a little anecdote of my own experience with the nut on a MiM Player Strat - when I recieved it the slots were cut at all sorts of jaunty angles. It was as if the slotting file had been held around 5 degrees off axis, leading to a fair bit of grabbing on the wound strings. Luckily I was already planning to install a TUSQ nut, but just thought I'd share. Maybe the person slotting mine felt a bit dizzy that day ;)

Picked up a second hand FSR about two months ago. Surprised by the build quality, body resonance and just how well it stays in tune. Temperature and humidity changes over the summer meant I've needed to loosen the truss rod a shade on account of some fret buzz but it's settled in fine now. The bridge generally disappoints however, the grub screws are soft and either too tight or so loose they have a tendency to unthread themselves. Loctite for now, but will replace with a set of Fender bent steel saddles similar to the MIM offset series from a few years ago. This is a great instrument and way, way better than it has any right to be.
@theguitaristas3 жыл бұрын
Cheers dude, good to know that about the bridge once it’s had a bit of a hammering... easy enough to upgrade as you say, and it occurs to me that this thing is totally worthwhile messing with over time! Thanks for comment and supporting the channel! 😎👍🎸

@@theguitaristas a pleasure to watch. Sometime in the future I want to try out a single coil left over from a previous project at the neck. It's a 6.9k hopefully(?) hot enough to contend with the humbucker at the bridge, but there's no rush, I'm really enjoying the standard HH for the time being. Liked and subscribed.

I am so happy this guitar is rated Super Cool! I mentioned on that ratings episode that my wife got me one for Christmas. I've been really enjoying it, but noticed [even with my 'playing' and tin ear] that the tone didn't really work at less than full volume.... Not really sure why I turned the volume below Max!! but a quick search of the internet revealed I was not alone. Maybe my guitar was old stock here in Thailand, but it seems the wiring was set up wrong at production. 2 mins fix with a soldering iron. Now it is UberKool!

@@theguitaristas thanks to Squier-talk, I moved the PU[s] [switched] hot output from the Vol Pot centre wiper tab [where it was common with the jack output] to the [hot?] tab common with the tone circuit. I think! I'm not sure what style wiring that is, but it works!

@@theguitaristas Got news back from Anderton's UK. Too bad delivery is 73 pounds! But at least the VAT of 20% is refunded to non-Euro residents. They can export because the FSR is not available here, but in USA, and Fender/Squier has restrictions on importing and exporting from foreign countries wherein retailers already sell. Smart way to reduce competition and keep costs up. It will have to wait until my next trip. Unless I can order one from Eire as its shipping costs are far , far less than the UK's. Cheers!

Just got around to picking up one of these in black .Looked at the new Sonic Mustangs but they don't have the comfort cut so went for a 2017 Bullet instead .Sounds fantastic in your hands ,great playing as always .Paid £90 on Reverb so cant lose.I may fit locking tuners ,purely for the convenience changing strings and a Tusq nut is only a tenner and very easy to fit so will prob do that too.Pick ups sound fine to me I'll prob leave those for now ,I'll just treat the fret board with Monty's relic wax to darken and feed it a bit . My Blacktop Jaguar p90 has given me a real taste for offsets .My Jag is a bit too hefty tho @8lb 8 oz so one of these should be a breeze ...

Fender should use this video as their promotional video. One thing this cool guitar has right is that it is a hard tail, so many cheap guitars (and expensive) are hard work because of a trem system that won't stay in tune.
