It’s funny how, for years, people marvelled at how he was able to struggle on with this home-made guitar that’s built using ‘found items’ & yet, when one really studies it hard, it’s revealed as actually SO advanced that he had an “unfair advantage“ over everyone!

Guitar preferences are like mommas home cooking, what feels right comes from what we were brought up on... That's why every now & then we'll run into that guy that prefers extremely high action & a guitar that plays like a 2x4 but ask him & he just loves it that way!

Building a guitar from scratch like Brian May did with his father was actually quite an impressive accomplishment.. In this day and age where it's so easy to build a kit without even having special tools. What he did without access to information like we have today is really extraordinary.. On top of that, the end result was more than a match to everything that had been done by Fender , Gibson and Gretsch..

I used to wonder why Brian May didn’t switch to a Fender or Gibson early on in his career but I can understand how two years of he and his fathers blood, sweat and tears would really make the Red Special feel like a part of him. This was a great video Goose! It showed how unique he was in so many things when it came to guitars . The music of course speaks for itself. Looking forward to hearing about your progress with the Texas Strat.

Hey Goose! I've been a fan of Brian's since I bought their first album in '74. I purchased all of their albums until my last purchase- the Game. Of course it had Bites the dust on it and there ended the affair. I recall reading that the first copies of Brian's Guitar, made by Guild sold for $ 365.00 Canadian.. I tried to buy one but ran into problems connecting me to the guitar ( logistics...due to where I live). The way Brian uses it with his "setup" is my ideal sound. Never got a Red Special but I still listen to it. I love 70's Les Pauls because of it. Nice Video- I'll save it. Thankyou!

My name is Kevin Kiso from Seattle. I've been a Queen aficionado since I was a boy of nine, ten years old. I saw Queen here at the Seattle Center Coliseum in 1980 and after the show I was experiencing great difficulty pulling myself away from the fifteen thousand seat capacity venue because as a child I had been so deeply moved by songs like Love Of My Life, Good Company, Tenement Funster, Bo-Rap, etc... While I was standing out behind the old Coliseum with my friend Mark Renstrum, Brian slowly walked out with the massive sandy haired gentleman who Freddie can be seen walking out of Logan Place Mews in some photos near the end ... Yes. Brian came out to a small group of about six of us and quietly talked, answered questions and signed some things. I let my friend Brad Neilins hold my Brian May autograph and he gratefully lost it. This is the most in depth documentary I've ever seen about the Old Lady. Those black and white photos are just incredible. I'm going to watch this again several times. Thank you a million times around Orion for this wonderful info.

I've been loving these History of whoever's Guitars, thank you very much - and I have a suggestion. I really love stories of people on a mission to find the sound they want, and someone who embodied that was Jerry Garcia. There's a trove of info available on his range of guitars and the customized guitar's he used. And the traffic it could drive would likely be impressive, there are a few examples of youtubers who've tapped into the fanbase and gotten a good bump from it. It's certainly a video I'd gladly share. Thanks again for the great work putting these out!

Very good work !! fans probably know that Brian's use of the AC30 is attributed to Rory Gallagher using one. Brian would see him play live. I read an interview in Guitar Player in the late '70s and he said it was the producers idea for him to use a Tele on "Crazy....". He felt he could have done fine with The Red Special. I guess convinced.

Thanks for creating this upload, Ramon. I knew about some of the details you included, but it’s great to have all of it in one place. Something which I’ve been wondering for a long time is who built the very first electric guitar with 24 frets. I’m inclined to think it was Brian, but that requires confirmation. Didn’t Gretsch and Rickenbacker both manufacture their first 24-fret models around 1964? As I recently told another KZbinr whose name is James Rundle, it was probably about 20 years ago (circa spring 2003) when I was at the retailer local to where I graduated from college and picked up one of the economy production replicas of the Red Special. It felt great in my hands, not to mention I was able to produce sounds from it that had nothing to do with Queen. I might have bought it, only I had just purchased another electric guitar the previous December. Since then, I’ve had someone assemble for me a homemade Stratocaster equipped with Burns pickups and switching derived directly from Brian‘s guitars. I’ve enjoyed playing it, but i’ve had more than one occasion to keep thinking back to that Red Special duplicate. I’m trying to keep the brakes on getting any more equipment through 2023. If I could afford a BMG model and opted to get one, I probably would want it to be jet black and without the scratch plate (since I am strictly a finger style guitar player anyhow).

Wish you'd have mentioned the date of the Oklahoma City concert. Saw them open for Mott the Hoople in 1974 (as I've mentioned). They were at the Fairgrounds International Building. Most concerts were at the Fairgrounds Arena, it seated 10K for hockey games, they put boards over the ice & added chairs, those tickets were called "Floor Tickets" $6.50. Saw a plethora of acts there, starting with Joe Cocker in 1972. I can't remember all the band's I saw there, but usually when major acts came through they played there. It began to switch to the Myriad in the later 70s. Saw Rod Stewart there about 1977, paid $15.00 for the cheap seats!!! However a few acts still played the old Civic Center it seats around 3-4K. Alas I've not been home in many years except to visit fam. Another long winded comment. LoL

Nice job lots of info in there, a couple of additions/points the Statellite Strat guitar was only used for the Play the game video because it gets thrown across the room and obviously he wasn't going to do that with the RS, the Fryer guitars are not commercially available he only ever finished the three, two Brian has and the third remained wth Fryer however he later sold it to a Japanese collector, you did miss the second updated version of the Guild the much closer replica with trisonics from the 90s this version came out after Freddie had died and so Brian was working on solo material and solo tours, it was probably used as a spare at the time but not much evidence is out there, however at the time it was the closest copy out there, later in 2001 the commecially available BMG Special which is the basic level copy before you upgrade to a Super came out, Brian has used it on demos/sales material for the guitar. Brian has a large collection or 'other' RS copies people have sent him, and on stage he also used the Guyton 'Badger' guitar for CLTCL which has f holes and a Piezo PU for accustic sounds as well as three Trisonics, He also used a Parker Fly on the track Nothing but Blue from his solo work.

The red special uses Burns tri sonic pickups and the same series circuitry as the 1962 Burns Vibra Artiste De Luxe guitar. The difference being that Jim Burns used only three 3 way toggle switches instead of six 2 way slide switches to get the same result - a much simpler and more elegant set up. Burns also used tremolo bridges with roller saddles and caged ball bearings as well as the knife edge Rezo Tube bridge used on the Burns Marvin. Burns also had the truss rod adjustment by means of a gearbox at the body rather than a nut at the headstock. I believe Gretsch also used his system under licence

I always think it’s weird when people who like the same tones as I do being up Brian May or Eric Johnson. Both great players but can’t stand the tone to my ear. We’ll talk SRV and early Bloomfield on the Tele for single tone reverb drenched, then Obviously the Beano album and again Bloomfield but on his Les Paul, then it’s like Brian May’s Vox tone or Eric Johnson’s violin tone…. Yeah not for me. But what a brilliant dude to build all that

@13:53 its interesting to see a truss-rod cover on a D-18, truss-rod access for Martin's is through the sound hole; I wonder if Brian got creative with doing a TR repair himself, using a Gibson type TR on a Martin. On a side note; relooking at the headstock it may not be a Martin, the shape of the headstock is right, but the white and somewhat blocky lettering and the truss-rod cover, leads me to suspect that it is a D18 clone.

What’s funny to me is how so many people have so many guitars saying this guitar is good for this and this guitar is good for that I can’t play this guitar on that song I have to use this other guitar for the other song. Then a guy like Brian built a guitar before he was famous and has played it for his entire career. He could buy any guitar he wants he could have whatever guitar built for him by any guitar manufacturer they would build him anything they wanted not only for free but they would give him xx amount of free guitars every year if he signs a deal with them he could easily get 10 free high end guitars every year that’s how it works when u sign a guitar deal they will give u a certain amount of guitars every tour or year if u have a deal with them say just for the past 40 years he had a deal and say he got 5 guitars per year that’s 200 guitars he could have for free and many different signature guitars but he didn’t because the guitar he made was what he liked so he wasn’t looking to get new signature models made. I always laugh when I see people that have been playing just a few years buying all these different guitars and I know a lot of people do this because they think the guitar is the reason they can’t play very good or can’t get whatever tone but in reality they just haven’t put in enough time practicing. So many really great players don’t play a ton of different guitars. One of my buddies who is one of the best players in my area he’s been playing for 25 years he only had like 7 guitars and really plays one of them most of the time he’s not big into gear he said the one day when a new guitarist plays a 5,000 dollar guitar u know he hasn’t been playing very long and when a really good player plays a 50 dollar guitar you can tell he’s been playing very long and you wouldn’t think oh he’s playing a cheap guitar because so much tone is in ur fingers sure hear matters to a point but if u can’t play no amount of gear will make u sound good and it’s so true. If u can make a cheap amp and guitar sound great image what playing through good gear will do. When I was playing in bands I remember a few guitarist from other bands all talking about the guitars, amps and gear that they have and when they asked me I said This amp u see me play all the time is my main amp it’s my only really good amp, I have 2 guitars both are middle of the road quality they have really good quality parts in them this is my main guitar and my other guitar I only play at the studio because it’s the best sounding guitar I’ve ever played but plays like shit and then I have a few pedals and my shure wireless that’s it. They kinda laughed and said well I have 20 guitars and 5 different Marshall’s and 4 different orange cabs and I said the gear doesn’t make u a better player IMO and having too much gear takes ur focus away from practicing the guitar if u only have one guitar and one amp that u play ur gonna try to get as much out of what u have. The one guy said but the amp u play can’t “do it all” Its a peavey 6505+ it’s such a high gain amp I said yeah it is but I changed the tubes to make it not sound as brutal, I did a bias mod so I could have a wide sweep for the power tube voltage and I played with the voltage and a few different brand pre amp tubes so I could get the sounds I wanted and played with different speaker wiring to change the ohms to get different sounds, play with where and how the pedals are for different sounds all these small things together make a big difference and then u use ur fingers if ur gentle it won’t sound as brutal and if u really dig in it will be brutal. There was a band that we all played shows with locally they were the biggest in our genre well one of their members quit, they posted online they were doing auditions to replace him and these guys asked to try out and I didn’t ask but the band asked me to try out they said I was one of the best in our genre and it’s because I focused on playing not gear. I had been playing for far less time then everyone else but I was much better because I focused on playing. Don’t get me wrong I’m a tone chaser but after buying a bunch of guitars and amps and stuff early on I realized that’s not what I needed.

For the record, Washburn's Wonderbar trem is NOTHING like a Floyd Rose, not even close. Sorry to quibble, but that's a pretty inaccurate comment.

I used to think that he was a genius making this guitar, but this video sounds like he was too damn greedy to spend any money on Fender or Gibson... 😀

I don't think it was a question of greed at all. In those days, many people couldn't afford, or even obtain a Fender or Gibson. Brian and his dad should actually be given a huge credit for their commitment and perseverance in building a guitar.

Brian has more than once, said that his family was pretty poor and he couldn't afford to buy guitars like that, not even the cheap copies
