Learnt a lot from my own mistakes but this definitive honest guide from somebody who really has the knowledge will be a holy grail for a lot of people ( including myself) just starting out in the art of decoying. I agree with everything said. I’d not normally bother with a video this long but this was fantastic and a trip down memory lane for me especially when he brought out the HH Decoys - I’ve still got 5/6 stuffed with foam to keep them in shape and they’re kept at the farm in an old home brew fermenting barrel carefully wrapped. They used to come with small balloons that you’d insert into the body then fill with air ( yep! by mouth😅 until they were firm ) - best decoys ever until the rubber started to age. And yes I remember in the 70’s and 80’s I seemed to be walking or cycling everywhere and decoying equipment had to be light to get it across ploughed fields etc and I was forever tinkering/modifying some bit of equipment to make life easier - I’d forgotten all that until I watched this video. Paul is the natural successor to Archie Coates and his wealth of knowledge and dedication to the sport is astonishing - and he wears it lightly. Look forward to the next one.

Great video! This, and the first one, are two of my favorite hunting videos. I had the great pleasure of shooting pigeons with Paul last month. Like in this video, much of the joy for me was in learning the field craft. Jonny does a great job capturing what it’s like to spend a day hunting with Paul. What an awesome video! I grew up rabbit hunting with an older gentleman and his dogs, probably because holding 5-6 beagles back from doing their jobs was a job in itself. I've got the same hide poles, and still think they are the best on the market. Quite agree with the silly plastic loops on the top of too many poles, that just get in the way. I had a 'Dead Cert' too, and, until the magnet came out, it was a great tool, especially up in a standing crop. One of the best pigeon tutorials I've seen - though I still think shooting sitting down is the best way: you can look over the hide, and the first bird is dead before it sees any movement.

Very good! A couple of things I don’t agree with but on the whole gold dust advice, air pressure thing was interesting, high or low which is best? Also I don’t know a farmer that’s happy about watching pigeons/letting them build up, they want them kept off, if you leave 300 pigeons for three days and shoot on the fourth day and shoot a hundred, yes you’ve had a great day but you’ve left all those pigeons undisturbed feeding hard, he would rather you went everyday all day and shot 25 but kept them off
@paulpayne1264
@paulpayne1264 Жыл бұрын
Hi, low pressure is better as with high pressure the birds are lazy and feeding late so more bunched up , I can see both sides, but if you keep chasing pigeons about they become decoy shy so your bags will become less but still get the damage, so if you let them settle then shoot- dead ones don’t come back!
@philipwilkinson636

Why Are Bag Limits So High? In Kentucky daily bag limits: Quail - 8 Grouse - 4 Rabbit - 4 Most ducks - 5 or 6. Electric and most moving decoys are illegal
@tgsoutdoors
@tgsoutdoors Жыл бұрын
Wood Pigeons are an agricultural pest, they need to be controlled as the numbers are so high. If you go out ad shoot a handful this just pushes the problem to a neighbouring farm, so large numbers (a small percentage of the local resident population) need to be taken to limit damage. In areas where there are less pigeons, significantly less are shot, however in the arable centres of Britain, regular large bags need to be taken. Winter is still the biggest killer of pigeons, but with milder winters and more intensive agricultural cycles, the population continues to rise.

Decathlon don’t sell any decoys/ hide poles/ netting or any hunting equipment anymore in the UK They sell the odd bit of country clothing but unfortunately they’ve got rid of all the decent stuff

Loved the video, but this is an area I'd have liked to hear more about. I stopped shooting pigeons over decoys when my local game dealer stopped taking them. I loved the shooting and saw the damage they were doing, but couldn't be happy with killing them just for crop protection with no onward route into the food chain. Even before that, I was concerned at the potential for spoilage resulting from dead birds being left out in the sun or piled up in the hide. Given all the kit sold for pigeon shooters, it has always surprised me that there's nothing designed to help get the birds to the dealer/larder in the best condition possible, and precious little advice available either.

Hi, my advice to keep birds in good condition is keep them out in the field and in the breeze even in sunlight as you get less flies out in the open than you will in the shade and never pile them up or they will go green quickly in hot weather 👍

I thought "somebody" tried to get pigeon shooting over stubbles banned as it was no longer deemed crop protection - hopefully common sense prevailed.

Yes the license was revised so by law you have to try moving the birds on first then it’s last resort to shoot them 👍

I enjoyed the video overall, but its interesting how decoyer's views differ. I consider myself an experienced shooter, but disagreed with Paul on a few points. I'm sure if you were to make a similar video with Anthony Poolman, his views would also differ. Just because someone is successful, it doesn't mean they are correct on every viewpoint they have.

People eat all those birds? Landowner doesn't care about the pounds of lead polluting his soil? Food grown there?

Pigeons get eaten and taste very nice . Lead isn’t a pollutant and is spread very vastly over the field . Much worse to eat a field of crops next to a busy road with all the pollution than someone shooting legally
