I don't know much about shotguns, but I have a 40+ old air rifle, and being in my 50s I like the look of the craftsmanship of the old guns, a bit of TLC and cleaning and it should last another 30+ years of moderate use and care/maintenance :) I am restoring my old air rifle now, but it still works :)

I have the same problem - guess it’s a good thing I’m not in the UK or else I’d have a truckload of guns from auction. I already spend too much time in the local pawn & gun shop. New guns are nice but there’s a lot to be said for classics. I think you got a fantastic deal - I’m jealous.

Holts has some amazing guns in their auctions, and thanks to Jonny for presenting them. I wonder what happens to the ones that don't sell?. I really liked that gun that belonged to the last king of Afghanistan. Had I known at the time I would have put in a bid for Lady Meux's 28 bore, but I don't think that I would have won.

I have an old (approx 1870-90?) SxS Shotgun with Damascus barrels. Both lock plates are marked only with the name DEAN. Only a bit of engraving on the screws and borders of the lockplates. External hammers and a break open lever curving around the right side operates a bottom center latching mechanism. Lockup is tight with no wobble. The number "903" appears on the lower tang, (or perhaps "206" if read from the other side). Under each barrel on the frame are proof or Maker's marks which appear to be crossed Battle Axes or Keys surmounted by a Crown. I have been told that the Crown indicates that the Gunmaker indicates "by appointment to" some Royal or another. Ditto under each barrel along with the proof marks which are difficult to describe, though probably recognizable to an expert in old English Doubles. The metal is patinated, with the Damascus barrels having a brown patina. The Damascus figure is still very clear and apparent. No major pitting or bad rusting to be found. It appears to have been a beautifully made and is tightly fitted to a top quality walnut stock, with fantastic figure and crotch, but definitely in the English style and with a bit of cast-off. Many dings to the wood but no major cracks. I have been unable to find any information on the maker, and nothing comes up on the net. I would sincerely appreciate getting any information regarding this gun if possible, which I am pretty sure is a fine old English Fowling piece. A range of dates would be appreciated.

@The_Elite_Emerald2 жыл бұрын
All you shotgun shooters tell me why I am wrong, but the way I figure it the most important parts of a shotgun are reliability and ergonomics, does it fit and feel good and deal with recoil well and does it fire and cycle every time, if so it’s a good shotgun, without having bent barrels it is impossible to screw up a shotguns inherent accuracy it is firing a bunch of pellets and where they go is controlled chance, unlike a rifle whose every action and barrel detail determines how reliably it places a shot, so if you find a good feeling cheap or old shotguns that works for you, there is no need to get fancy. I shoot trap with a 130 year old Parker Bros. Side-by-Side, and it works great for me (only issue is that it kicks like a mule and on summer days gloves are required.)

Hello, I want to ask a question like this. For example, is the barrel inner diameter of a 12 gauge smoothbore shotgun 1/2? 2/3? 3/4? Etc. Which one makes better grouping and gives better results in flying and fleeing hunts? As a hunter, I am very curious about this. I would be very happy if you answer my question and I will gain information about a subject I do not know. Thank you very much, I am waiting for your answers.

Will you be adding spinning gold wheel covers to your Range Rover now Johnny? Now that you've elevated your bling game ... But seriously. Nice demonstration of the fact that there ARE bargains out there if you're willing to buy function and fit rather than brand. As a point of order £400 is roughly $480 and you wouldn't be finding anything like that shotgun on the American market for that price because that would be giving it away. That gun is $6-700 all day every day because the alternative at that price point is nowhere near as good.
