The control tower at the former RAF base at Greenham Common has opened to the public after a refurbishment costing about £750,000.
When the US Air Force brought cruise missiles to the base in the 1980s activists established the Greenham Common Women's Peace Camp and began a protest that lasted 19 years.
The control tower now houses a museum and cafe.
Opened in 1942, it was used by both the Royal Air Force and United States Army Air Forces during the Second World War and the United States Air Force during the Cold War, also as a base for nuclear weapons. After the Cold War ended, it was closed in September 1992.
All Drone footage within CAA UK Regulations.
Special permission granted for some locations.

Thanks for the video. I was stationed there 80-83 at the beginning of GLCM as a fire fighter. I remember the days of going to work in bus convoys as they dragged many cnd’ers from in front and around the buses waiving and welcoming us on the way to work. Fun times. It was a very nice base and I miss the many pub crawls through Newberry.

I was stationed at RAF Greenham Common from Apr 82 - Aug 85. It was perhaps one of the most depressing as well as the happiest assignments I have had in my 30 years of Service. I was in personnel and started the our Red Cross facility as well as Family Services. Processed all Visa requests, Reports of Birth Abroad, Passports (Love that part, I got to go to London every week), but saw too many divorces'. I loved England, Wales, Germany and Paris. Building up a base from the bottom was very pain steaking and stressful for everyone assigned because we all worked 16-17 hours a day until we were deemed a fully operational. GLCM style. But thank you very much for the video. I'd still like to fly back just see for myself, but, Unfortunately, getting too old. I'm with Mike loved the pubs.

I was pre-deployment security testing, radios at Fort Lewis, and security procedures at D-M AFB and in Arkansas. Injured while in Arkansas and lost my overseas orders as part of the initial deployment, nearly washed out of the Air Force as I was barely able to walk for several months. Blessing in disguise,as I was able to move up into battle staff for a time, then went to RAF Upper Heyford where my career really took off.

Very interesting video Mark. It would be great to visit there, though I suspect you get to see a lot more with your drone than you could on foot.

It's a great place to visit on a sunny day, you definitely get to see more with the drone Kev. But there are lots of bits and pieces of the Cold War history purposely left in place. Thanks for watching Kev have a great week.

Very good aerial views Mark and thank you for the historical information. My wife and I were living in the UK in the mid 1980s. I think I vaguely recall the protest re cruise missiles but I could be wrong. Thanks for sharing.

Really nice flight and edit Mark. Does not take long for nature to take back. The old bases become nice parks. The Bunkers are interesting and makes you think back about the threat war has and the level of operation readiness and how busy the base was at its peak operation.
