Finally some good info for setting up DVRs and streaming TV. So many of these videos just blah blah blah about the apps and extra features but never show you anything about how to actually set up the hardware devices or even what to get or buy.

Been on Roku for years but since I'm mac everywhere else it made sense to get Apple TV. It's good. The apps are more dynamic and the integration with Apple products. Roku still has me on UI and usability

That's the cool thing about it. It sits on your home network and works with any TV that has a Roku or other compatible Tablo device!

If I had Sling TV, would I be able to record programs from Sling tv, or is it only OTA programs that can be recorded? Obviously I wouldn't need to record from Netflix or Amazon prime, but sling tv is live tv that is streamed over the internet. My hope is that I would be able to record some of that programing with the Tablo as well as OTA channels.

Nope. Its a licensing issue right now, so you can not record any content from Sling, its live only. You can not even pause, or back up.

One advantage Roku has over the Fire is that if the Internet goes out, you can still view your recorded content on Tablo and live TV. The Fire needs Internet access in order to bring even local content to your TV. I found that out by accident. There's something that can be side loaded onto the Fire that allows you to by-pass that on local, but who wants to bother with that?

I realize not all ROKU devices have earphone ports. Nor does everyone want one. But that is certainly something you should check when looking at their various products. But IIRC correctly, the video was really more about how each device differs in its interface with Tablo. Each TV interface will have various pros/cons associated with it.
