I live in a rural poor place. I came up back breaking labor making 10$ an hour fencing, roofing, fire water damage demo. Then i went doing windows about 15$ an hour for lowes. I got really aggressive during the pandemic. Met the right people. Got sold the right leads from plumbers and started replumbs under their license but on my own they just sell their license (i have 6 years apprentice under me but cant get licensed because it requires signoff. My guys i was under either died or dont want compitition themselves, dirty) i started with the goal of 1k a day off of them. This last year i got a school from a referral to bid replumbing. my bid was the highest but they said was the most clearly written. Cleared 40k in 3 weeks. And tho it may not be life changing to most......to me its everything, greatly changed my trajectory. Important to get up and go to work everyday, not curse every other sentence. I dont smoke or curse. Speak clearly to people. And just stay positive enjoying the work. The money will come.....even if much later in life like myself.

Some people are just that lucky to find themselves in that 1 in a million spot where they have all the skills, tools and ideal personality AND they are surrounded by idiot millionaires. Guys like this and The Handyman represent *.1%* of handymen. Kind of like OF models. There are a ew handful that make $50-100k a month, but the vast majority don't make shit. It can be a sign you're doing something wrong, but it is also just as likely that that is simply your area. FTR the most ive ever made was $60k. Which was last year. I've been doing this for 7 years and my normal is like $30k/yr. Now, that's only working like 15 hrs a week. I charge $75/hr and that's just what my market bares. There is a lot I could do to improve and I'm working on it. Will I ever make over $100k doing this in my area? I think it's quite possible, but I just don't have the image or presence. Not to mention I have no license. So growing and advertising is difficult if not impossible. The bottom line is don't feel bad when guys talk about how awesome their business is doing or how much money they are making. Do the best you can, take information that is useful and don't be afraid to charge more. You work for a profit, for a better life, for your retirement, for your kids (if you have any).

@@comancheclub3449 That’s gross BUT i charge hourly plus materials, i have ali my tooling i need paid for, only expense i have is fuel and insurances. So $10-$12$ so net is $115k ish. I’ve been doing handyman stuff part time for 8-10 years usually just helping friends. I got laid off mid 2019 and been doing it full time ever since. i do live in a high population area. Washington DC metro. The biggest thing i couldn’t wrap my head around was what rate to charge. I have always charged hourly. For the most part. It took me a while to figure out what it would take to fix things or build things and so i always was way under in how much time it took for bids. Also, i was always running into details or extra crap to fix during prep on unknowns. Now days If i have a good solid job with known variables like installing a new deck. Or doing a bathroom remodel. I bid those out but also use my new rates to. But i just do hourly rate and tell oriole hey if everything goes accordingly then it will be 3-4 hours or 5-6 hours at my hourly rate. If you run into problems that were unforeseen then it’s on them. I was charging $18 and hour. As my rate for about the first year. Then with the handyman and gaining more confidence in myself i went to $30 an hour then $65 and hour. I went to $85 an hour now and $125 an hour for anything i have to use an extension ladder. So higher gutter cleaning and replacing a roof vent boot etc or blown of shingle. I do a two hour minimum as well. I have not had hardly any push back on my rates at all. I do get “oh two hour minimum so that means i can give you more work?” I say yep keep me busy for two hours or not up to you i tell them: they usually find a couple light bulbs they can’t reach or hang a couple pictures etc. i charge the same rate to go get materials. I’m now slowly rolling back through and getting a lot of repeat customers now and also referrals. It was hard to wrap my head around the rates. I’d never pay that. I was always thinking about, if this was something i needed done how much would i be willing to pay. But, then i thought of i didn’t have this or that tool and i needed to do this hoe much would I need to invest to get it done. Also the average combined household income in this area I’m in is about $300k do hell $85 and hour for me to do and then they can go meet their buddies at the bar or football game. It well worth it. If i get a deck job that i want to bid or a small low pitch roof job etc i just do $680 a day. If i need a helper i add that on of course plus all the materials etc.

@@comancheclub3449 another good tool i found was this book. It’s called “the smarter handyman” by Brian Tenny. I found it on Amazon and I’ve talked to him in email. He did handyman for quite a while and sold his company for a huge profit and retired. But he’s got some great info in his book. Same thing through he is sold on hourly. I like it cause i can adjust it as we see fit as well if we make an mistake or take to king for a boneheaded move then i can just tell my customer hey it took me longer to figure that out than it normally does do I’m dumping a half hour off but i never get cornered on the shirt end either. One time i was installing screen doors. 6 of them and they all had to be assembled. The guy say you told me two hours a door. He supplied the door bought them from habitat humanity store no deprecations each one was different. I said yeah usually there’s come with directions if i assembled and on top of that each in is different no directions he got pissed off i was four hours in on one door. I said well you can pay me for two hours and I’ll leave. What i did. He paid me two hours i left and i left all his shit in a big pile.

Good video. You’re 100% on point with everything especially with the psychology of going into business and the fear associated with it. I also am a handyman and do everything that you do yet fear and pricing hold me back tremendously. You have an uncanny ability to navigate these things and I think you underestimate that greatly within yourself. You have a supreme gift of not only knowing how to do the work but knowing the business side of it as well. You do not give yourself enough credit for that and that is where all of us are struggling. it is something unique to you. You always say that anybody can do it and you’re right, but it does take a certain level of courage to get out there and do what you did. Risk stops a lot of us especially myself.

Hi lad, I read your comment about the handyman. I've followed his channel for about 2 years now and I've gained a lot of valuable knowledge from him but the I think the easiest and probably the most valuable lesson that he talks about is pricing the jobs. Easiest thing , you figure out the value of the job and add on 20% for quick in and out job and with big jobs add 50% . If you get the job and make that profit then your business is winning. If you don't get the job because the client Said your price is too expensive, then that's a win in strategy at least because your not gonna work for cheap shit money and only break even or even you might lose money on the job. ALWAYS PRICE HIGH and if u get the job, then great. If u don't even better ,because they are cheap clients and don't value your skills so let them find someone else. One major thing you should never do is to give a price for a job and then you let the client bargain you down and he sets the price. No way, never do that because your never make money if your let that happen and the client will be thinking that you are weak and you'll be treated you like a bitch.

I used to work last 15 years for someone else, couple of years in construction while young but now living in Ireland and last ten years renting a house and doing maintenance of it so got some tools and April this year i decided to become self employed - handyman. Since then on average i did at least what i would do as self-employed. Best week so far was 2 grand but still trying to figure out the game. Last week i finished my first bathroom renovation and now got few more clients to work for so looking forward to scale it and get some subs and focus on sales. 100% agree with you about selling being the most important part of the business. I think learning how to sell and run a small business are some of the most valuable skills out there, because no matter what happens, I know I can do something to support myself and my family.

It helps when dealing with customers to appear as educated (or better yet more) than the customer. I've worked with hardworking tradesmen that would have done well as a "silent" business partner splitting sales with their labor, but if working as a 1-man business did poorly just because of the way they talk. It actually works against the tradesman if English is their native language and they can't communicate at a similar level as the customer. If English is a 2nd language customers are more likely to assume that person could still be intelligent because they are at least multilingual.

Just my 5 cents (thanks inflation): I'm a handyman in Maine, but I don't think I've done a stereotypical "handyman" job yet. Self-employed, have my own sole prop. I only take jobs I know will make me money. For instance, I painted the exterior of a house and trimmed the windows outside. Made $4,500, took me 10 days (because my paint gun kept fucking up and we had a lot of rain). I'm proposed to make about 10 grand in October with just 3 jobs lined up. I had no idea how lucrative this business could be. My best friend is a master stone mason and made $250k in less than a year, which is why I wanted to watch your video. I'm hoping some young buck sees the comments here, including mine, and gets inspired to start his own thing. Your videos are great. It’s so funny to me because I am self employed and people are shocked at what I make. A lot of people don’t realize how much of what you make is expenses. The gas, insurance, the time to pick up materials, maintenance on the truck, registration for the trailer whatever you can think of you have to pay for it and price that into how much you make per/hour of bids.

The jobs became bigger real fast. Side note, I was not handy. I would be asked if I could do something, then I would look on KZbin and watch you do that repair. I’m on my 2nd attempt of being self employed. The first round I didn’t have the discipline and my savings dwindled away. Went back to a job and built my savings up again. This year back at it and is going quite well, staying afloat. Some weeks are better than others but pretty consistent in flow of work. Making 250 and profiting 250 are different thing. I do what you do , but i am getting older , the transition to hired labor is my new challenge for me. Wondering your advice for employee's do you go with sub or bring young guys in? maybe older guys who would be subs but bring them in 10-40 part time and pay them by either the day or the job? The short job duration (smaller jobs) put a lot on me for schedules. how best to not lose to much for the gaps in the schedules as i transition. great channel always well made vids, and a similar yet different perspective keeps me interested. thanks for your hard work.

I've hired one hourly guy who is great, but I really need a second one to make this work. My intention is to back off of the physical labor part of the work and just focus on the sales portion. Hopefully I can make this transition work so I can recover some leisure time for myself.

S35 30 years in home improvements did well repeat customers 5 star references made good money where I was weak needed electricians plumbers still sold lots of jobs Covid came than had 2 strokes still get calls farm out jobs hard to watch for customer stealing. Have deck Reno coming in October. Got messed up in selling our house. So gonna down size to getting a trailer than flip trailers. See what happens. Have 2 skills. Can sell know the work. So will see. One step at a time Hit gym. 3x a week. Owner haas a lot of expierence in working with disabilities. Well that’s short. Version of long story. Still have your cup. Thank you for great vids

This really is the key to 80% of "The HandyMan's" success I believe. He is in that perfect idelic goldilocks situation where 3 out of every 4 people in his area is an IT millionaire that doest know the difference between a hammer and a drill. They have unlimited money to burn and zero skills or interest in maintaining their million dollar homes/rentals. Tbf, he is also very skilled, has whatever license he needs, and there is apparently no other handymen in his area. So he can charge $1,000 to install a lightbulb. If only we could all be so fortunate. I mean, good for him, but his situation and circumstances is so impossibly unlikely and unreplicable that it's really not a good idea to hold yourself to his standard of income. It's just not feasible for 99.3% of handymen out there.

Many of the jobs actually do pay that or more but they don't leave with it. They look at the work that needs to be done say 650 bucks and then when they do the work it comes to $185 an hour.

The employee rate in my area is $35-40 an hour plus benefits. $320 a day plus benefits? However, As a self-employed I haven't been able to make real money.....Usually I make around $500-700 a day but after all the extra time looking for clients, free estimates, longer hours, ads, bookkeeping, overhead etc...I'm probably making the same or less than the employee working under a company. It hasn't worked out for me so far. Maybe I need a website and need to invest more to find the right clients so I can charge more. I need to be making at least $1000 or more per day.

Jobber might be great but Stripe, its credit card processor, isn't to be trusted. We've heard too many horror stories about Stripe freezing funds due to a dispute and then holding the money indefinitely. Apparently the Stripe contract basically says that the money you're being paid is actually THEIR money and they'll pay it out when they feel like it. Can't run a business like that so we don't use Stripe.

I've been doing handyman type of work my whole life. Mostly because it was cheaper to learn to do it myself. Formed my llc last November. The most difficult thing is finding work. 2nd to finding customers that aren't expecting to find the cheapest solution to their problem or project. The other issue I have found is all the scammers promises to get your business recognized on Google. Your videos motivate me to keep on keeping on. Thank you
