Bluesound introduced a new series of network players and looking at them I thought they were pulling my leg for they look identical to the previous models. And then the web buzzed about drastic sound improvements. Time for a review.

Upgraded from a Sonos connect to the Bluesound Node 2i. Its a step up in sound quality that everyone would hear. Now I want to experiment with DAC's. What price range for a external DAC would you consider Hans ( I allready have a Schit Bifrost on my mind)? Setup is a Unison tube amp with Cabasse Bora speakers. Very good content here. I can't say. First I have not reviewed the PS Audio. Second I can't tell how well your hearing is. And third I don't know how good your stereo is. I am quite sure I will hear a clear difference....

Hi Hans, Thanks for your reviews! May I ask you a question? I want to upgrade my Node 2i and see two options: 1. keep using internal DAC and install an aftermarket upgrade PSU intertace + better PSU (Allo Nirvana low noise or Audiophonics, Shanti or Sbooster linear). Investment 200-400 euro's depending on PSU. 2. Invest in external DAC. The SMSL Sanskrit MKII with the on board AK4493 seems to be an upgrade. For the Sanskrit a low noise PSU like Allo Nirvana or iFi should be sufficient. Investment around 200 euro. What do you think makes more sense? Thanks for helping. Bas

Hans , how would you judge the node 2i to the Cambridge CNX V2 in one of your previous video's you said that the CNX V2 sound sounds better if you have a higher quality Stereo system ( which I do -audiophile -4X plus + the figure that you mentioned in your video) I find the quality of the node 2i as very good using my PS Audio DirectStream DAC , as I only want a streamer I am also getting a CNX V2 to compare but would love to hear your thoughts on it . I am also thinking about an InnOus zen 3 also but I don't RIP CD but listen to HiREZ classical on Quboz & Tidal basically need a good quality streamer -You thoughts -! thanks

Works perfectly with my Devialet's Dialog + pair of Phantoms speakers. Cured the issues I had with the Dialog inability to connect reliably to Qobuz.

Primare i25 prism + Bluesound node N130, was about to return the Node n130. the sound became restless and my ears tired while listening. Node 2 just sounded more relaxed. The problem was that Gain was set higher than 0. +4. for the 3 inputs on the Primare i25 prism. reset it to 0, what a relief that is.

I'm currently debating this unit. I need a Streaming/DAC that is small and of high quality. Has to handle MQA full decode/folding. I don't need it to have a screen or display of any kind. Use through the phone is fine, even prefered. If it has a web browser function or client app, even better. How would rate this up against others in this price range? Thank you.

Would an unpowered SSD work for playing flac files via the USB port?

USB should be able to deliver 500 mA at 5 volts, which is 2.5 watts. So if the SSD consumes no more than 2.5 watts, you're safe on any network player.

Hi Hans, since this bluesound 2i it is possible to connect a wireless headphone. But i have (maybe a stupid) question. Why should i connect to the bluesound rather than directly to my smartphone (apple). Does sound significant improve connecting to de BS. Pls can you explain??

The Node 2 is discontinued so the unit I will be receiving is the 2i for which I am happy. My audio store is very slow on delivering the product but I wanted to support a local merchant over a large chain source. Hoorah for the little guys.

Hello Hans, Nothing tot do with the node but a tip from a regular viewer. The usb pro audio app has launched a mqa core decoder plugin. Perhaps something for you to look into somewhere in the future. A basic bitperfect USB streamer with mqa for around €10 in the smartphone you already own. I'm going tot give it a go.

If you play an MQA file that contains a signal with a 88.2 or 96 kHz sampling rate or higher, the digital output will give you the 'first unfold' at 88.2 or 96 kHz. If you connect a DAC that can render MQA files to the Node2i's digital output, the signal will get rendered to the original sampling rate, up to even 384 kHz. I am thinking a used Node 2 would be a good value as my first network streamer because I already own a Pro-Ject PreBox S2 Digital (based on your review). Sound wise there is little - if any - difference. So it is a matter of needing 5 GHz wifi, bi-directional Bluetooth and/or Airplay 2.

You can improve the sound by using an external DAC but you do loose the MQA rendering unless you buy an MQA DAC. And to get a real improvement you might want to spend the same amount on the DAC as the price of the Node 2. But spending twice the price of the Node 2 might be over the top. I can't say if Schiit is a good choice since I have not reviewed them.

I own the Node2 and i own a schiit modi multibit DAC (almost all my gear is Schiit). I did some casual listening w/ the preamp connected to the Schiit DAC and also connected the preamp to Node2 directly. I found it hard to detect differences. Maybe i should do a better hearing test and try harder. But at least it indicates there is not much to be gained. (could do a better test if needed)

The problem is that you want a simple answer but a streamer's audio quality depends on many factors like the Ethernet receiver - which is normally is a chip, the PCB design (which costs a lot of time to do really good), the clock crystals, the DAC chip, the I/V conversion, the housing (to reduce microphony) and so on. So it's not a single component, it's the total design. Like with a car the stiffness of the body, the suspension layout, the engine, the tires and so on make it a good or better car.

You want the input impedance of the two subs together to be about 10 times or higher that the output impedance of the sub-out in the Node. Problem is that the output impedance of the Node is not specified and the same could be the case for your subs. The easiest way is just try it. Nothing will get broken (if the equipment functions as advertised).

Nice review. Question, I have a number of Sonos Connects - for my main system I use a digital output into a Schitt DAC. I have also just started to evaluate Roon to run everything. For sound quality does it matter if I am using a Sonos given the D/A conversion is occurring somewhere else? If I replaced the Sonos with the Node 2i but continued to use the same DAC would it make a difference? I have the Sonos hardwired so there are no obvious problems like drop outs. Thanks

I purchased the Nodi 2i based on reviews like this one about 30 days ago and so far I have mixed feelings. I think the sound is VERY impressive, but I have low internet speed of 4Mbps to 6Mbps. So, this is where I am confused because tech support swears it should run my Amazon Prime music at 2Mbps and I am getting numerous "Stream Connection Timed Out" notices and the music just stops? This has been happening every 5 songs or so? Now, I have been in touch with tech support plenty and forwarding the internal logs to get to the bottom of the issue. I have tried resetting my modem IP as suggested to a number of others, but nothing seems to work. Now, I can stream Netflix or any movie service without issue and stream Amazon Music with their App without issue, so why is the Nodi 2i BluOs so sensitive to internet speed or is there something else causing this? Any help out there?

The quality of your internet connection is never constant. So there always need to be some reserve. You can test your internet speed at www.speedtest.net.

The problem with a low speed connection is that latency starts to come in, the communication that comes with your internet connection can't cope with the audio stream.

Hans, I agree on your take on the sound quality. I own both a node 2 and a chord Poly/mojo combination. The latter is the clear winner on detail and accurate reproduction of voices and instruments compared to the node. But the node does mqa and offers fatigue-free listening that gives it it's own place in my system. A question. Could you consider a video on mqa rendering? Listening tot mqa files through the analog out (=full mqa) of the node 2 gives a coherence between instruments that is somewhat lacking when using the node for decoding and the Mojo as a dac (toslink in). The Mojo doesn't seem it's usual brilliant self. The individual instruments and voices sound great and better than through the node's analog out. But the coherence of the orchestra is lacking. Same with the tidal desktop app for decoding and the Mojo connected over USB. Any thoughts?

In contrast to what the designer of the FPS's, Rob Watts, states the Mojo does not cure jitter and the digital output of the Node - although fair for its money - is not free of jitter.

@@eug3nius not in my experience. Pcm sounds coherent. Tidal offers plenty of albums where PCM and mqa are both offered. But mqa offers so much more in detail and relaxed naturalness that pcm is'nt the preferred source for me anymore. And as a matter of factor, neither is 'normal' high res....

Sources were the node 2 and a laptop without USB 'decrappifiers' and with chord's standard USB cable (Mojo) and Audioquest forest USB (PS audio). Nothing fancy, but it did raise the mentioned question. Full mqa came from the node 2 and a meridian explorer2.

I just have new node 2i, it soud very nice, but i found one little issue. When i plug headphones to front 3.5 jack, there is some little buzzing sound on background (it not appear when i put headphones to my amplifier that connected to node by RCA). Have anyone same experience?

It should not do that, for as far as I can see. But I have very little headphone knowledge. Check with your dealer or local representative of NAD.

When buying used, how can versions 2 and 2i be distinguished from each other visually externally?

there is very little difference between the two visually. The Node 2 has a slightly velvety feel that the 2i doesn't have and the 2i is about 1 mil smaller. The only visual clue is the label at the bottom. It clearly states the model number twice, although in small, low contrast print.

Does anyone have any experience between the node 2 and 2i as strictly streamers? Any difference in sound quality that you feel you’ve heard? Dion’t care about the DAC, Bluetooth, Apple, MQA functions- just the streamer. I’ve seen one review from a person who said there was no difference. I have the 2 and I think it’s great as a streamer-only option, better than through my laptop and Audrivana.

@@TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel Yes, I’ve watched this review quite a few times, but in comparison you used the analog outputs of both, which means you used the DACs which are said to be not as good as many external DACs. So I didn’t see a direct streamer-to-streamer comparison - if there was, I’m afraid I’m missing it.

Hi Hans, I have two Node 2i and very satisfied. Thanks for the great review. I am thinking of buying a used Node 2 to use for my backyard setup with Roon and I would like My guests to use Bluetooth. I know you mentioned that the Bluetooth module got an update, I do not need by-directional or the a PTX but do you think the updated Bluetooth module of the 2i has a larger range? For my backyard O wonder if the Node 2 has less BT range. Thanks!

Hans, thank you very much for great amount of useful information. I would appreciate your advice - i run roon core on intel nuc with roon rock installed and ec pi2d integrated amplifier's da converter connected to nuc via a-b usb cable. My question is there a risk to get lower sound quality in case if i will use bluesound node2 (i) as roon endpoint connected to roon core and analogue input of my amplifier. In other words i want to benefit from roon ready capability of bluesound, but i'm afraid that its dac is much worse than dac of my ec pi-2d amplifier (cs 4398)..

I don't know your amp but even if it does a better job doing the D/A-conversion, my guess would be that using the Bluesound as streamer will sound a lot better than a USB connection directly to your amp.

The question is, what will you choose - using the better but not mqa dsd capable DAC in amplifier connected digitally to node2i or ca15d or worse node2i or ca15d DAC with dsd and mqa support connected to amp via rca?

Sooo Hans. Just so you know. The reason you might be getting wifi issues is probably because you have some weird wifi setup in you list (don’t know if it is yours or a neighbour). Those WIFI boven en beneden AP’s are not using roaming which means that edvices will be having a hard time reconnecting whenever you go down- or upstairs. I see a same pattern with HBz and HBz2 AP’s. If you (or your neighbour) need help setting them up better i can help you out through DM because that will fix a lot of interference.

Thank you for a good review. What would recommend to provide raw music files to this device? Perhaps a connected SSD? Also, I own the Node2, are these now Roon end points?

I would use a normal USB drive that has its own power supply. There is no need for high speed. The speed of a normal drive is sufficient for more than ten audio streams. And yes, The Node 2 got an update over 2 years ago that makes it a Roon Endpoint.

I have purchased one a couple of weeks ago and find the sound quality excellent. My issues were setting it up. It never directly connected to my wifi so I plugged it directly via ethernet. I then plug my CD into the analog section. Again sound is great. Now for the problems. I have numerous 50+ error messages dealing with "stream connection timed out" and others which I am not sure I understand and currently sending logs directly to their tech dept. I have rather slow internet which may not be helping my issues.

Digital Bliss I do use an Ethernet port. But I feel I outgrown Nodes sound quality. Buying a new steamer is a better idea than buying a new DAC and connecting it to coaxial out of Node 2?

@@vadimkrylov in my view a streamer influences the sound as well. You will keep the bluesound 'house signature' in sound if only the dac is changed. My chord Mojo gives a markedly different end result with either the node 2 or the chord Poly as streamer. The Poly is clearly better. But it won't do mqa. Hans had tested several streamers. Indeed time to move on?

@@DigitalBliss69 Apparently one of the big improvements sound wise in the Node 2i is the WiFi performance. Remember too that ethernet connection provides a means for possible electrical noise from the router. More attention is being paid to these factors these days, so mileage may differ with different components.

0:53 "controlled by smartphone,tablet or computer" can you be a bit more specific? Is the 'computer' s/w windows only or can you access the Node 2i with a general web browser (that is the node 2i has a HTML5 web server in it so I can control with something like firefox). I suspect this is really "android" or iOS/apple on the smartphone, and then a custom windows only app for the windows PC side. But general browser interface will be helpful since I use Linux desktops.
