I turned 72 on Halloween. I was taught old school cursive in grade 3, every up stroke was light and every downstroke was dark. I got 100% for this in my yearly exam with a comment of. The most perfect hand writing I have ever seen from my teacher. In grade 4 they changed to the new cursive and I hated it. I went back to printing and I sloped it backwards but at home I used old cursive. My handwriting was beautiful and I think being an artist helped. Until I got my first computer and using one of those all of the time makes you lose what you could write. Thank you for this. I have wanted to try it for a long time but it looked too hard, now I will learn.❤

I'm 68 and was also taught old school cursive throughout my school life growing up in London. I still use cursive in typical handwriting but became fascinated with calligraphy style in my teens, and did my own "uptake" on what I thought Calligraphy writing was. 15 Years ago I purchased a Calligraphy set with an instruction book, and a couple of broad nibbed pens, I didn't understand the instruction book then, and still don't understand it now!! :0). Now I have retired I want to learn more, so I purchased another instruction book, but this time it had the strokes to practice, plus letters of the Alphabet in upper and lower case, something that my purchase 15 years ago didn't. I have tried to watch many (very quick) videos on this site but found that this site was the best one in easy explanation and direction. I will keep practising not necessarily to make a career of it, but because I love handwriting itself and Calligraphy in equal measure.

This was great!! I’ve always avoided learning calligraphy or brushstroke letters because it always seemed like to many steps. Your tutorial helped simplify the steps but was easy for me to get a great result!!

Ah, this clarified a question I had. With cursive writing, often I use an up and down stroke on the same line, such as lower case d and u. So anytime a down stroke is used, thicken that line, even though it started as an upstroke. (I hope this makes sense!) But I do see the advantage of learning calligraphy which uses separate strokes.

I started learning this about a month ago but bc of how I gripped the pen, I developed a sore spot on my thumb. Then I got a YT video in my feed on penmanship, & this older lady showed different ways to hold the pen (she was using a fountain pen), & I discovered a new grip that has really helped me, especially with my upstrokes, which felt uncontrolled. I lay the pen between my index finger and middle finger which automatically puts the pen at the 45-degree angle, & my thumb simply supports the pen instead of gripping it. It’s really amazing how well it works for me!

Practice, practice, practice and then practice even more. It's basic strokes but getting the pressure down is what makes this so dang difficult. Make sure you buy the right tools for it too. This art is not for the weekend warrior. Goodluck yall.

I agree, I have some degree of difficulty with the up and down strokes if I am honest. I can't make my upstrokes look thinner than the down strokes at the moment, they all seem to look the same but I am determined to master it. I have purchased some pretty good pens, (although not many at the moment), and they seem to be doing the trick.

I learned a little about calligraphy in my 8th grade art class (please don't ask me how many centuries ago that was!), and this is the simplest yet most understandable breakdown of the art I've ever come across. I usually take advantage of my extensive collection of computer fonts when seeking an unusual design for a greeting, but I think I'll dig out my (sorely underused) calligraphy brush pens and give your method a try. Thanks for sharing! 👍

Back in the day, I did the awards and diplomas in calligraphy for our small elementary school. I taught a small class of five students, but I never "learned" the simplicity of basics. This is a great video to learn a dying art. Computers have replaced "the art of penmanship." This video brings a smile to my 72 year old face. 😊

Wow, thank you! That was very helpful and so quick! I've not seen anyone give such a concise, basic, & straight to point, mini calligraphy tutorial, in so little time, yet so clear & informative. I don't watch all that many calligraphy videos, because I am already far too busy trying to learning how to draw with graphite & pen and ink, alcohol, water based, & watercolor markers, watercolor, pastel, & colored pencils, oil & soft pastels, & how to paint in Ink,watercolor, gouache, acrylic, & oil painting, all at once, and all without having any prior knowledge, experience, skill, or talent, and then decided to make some cards with some of my art work, hence my interest in trying to incorporate learning calligraphy into an already absurd amount of art mediums. I have seen hundreds of videos in all mediums, most good, and perhaps a dozen in calligraphy, that were good, and somewhat helpful, but none that laid it like you did in this very short video, but helpful video, and I instantly subscribed to your channel, and will definitely be watching your other videos, when I can make time in the midst of this "fools errand" I am on of trying to learn every art medium there is, all at once, which, obviously is not progressing along swimmingly, as I had hoped. I know I should focus on learning one or two skills at a time, but I can't seem to be able to help myself from trying to do everything simultaneously. It might be easier if a had a clear preference of medium, but they all have their pros and cons, so thus far, not a one stands out among the crowd as the clear winner of which medium I should start with. Anyway, I love how your video did not overload my senses, and delivered exactly what it promised.

I tried learning calligraphy over 40 years ago. But since I am left handed I never was able to learn properly because I was taught to go from right to left so that I wouldn’t smudge the ink. Back then we used pens with nibs-maybe a brush pen would make it easier for me.

I am so tired of seeing these sort of videos. This is just her handwriting and that is fine, please don't call it calligraphy. Proper calligraphy takes years of discipline and practice to perfect. Find someone to teach you the proper way to do it.

The ancient craft of calligraphy, often considered an art form, that saved Western civilization after the fall of the Roman Empire, you desecrate with your shallow, ignorant, interpretation. Heaven help us from suburban American women. I could almost despair. I counted to more than 10 before writing this, but the insensitivity and ignorance of the “creator” of the video was too troubling, too appalling. I hope, in some way, this helps.
