guys they were both right it does both 😭😭😭 source: sids newsletter The story centres around Cognify and their device designed to create ‘prisons of the future.’ The idea involves connecting offenders and criminals to a sci-fi pod-style device that alters their brains and implants artificial memories. These memories force them to see their crimes through the eyes of their victims and ‘experience’ their pain and suffering. The goal is to create “emotional states like remorse and regret that would be triggered by tweaking neurotransmitters and hormones in real time.” What's even more mind-bending is that prisoners are expected to be given a choice: either serve a lengthy sentence in a traditional prison or undergo this intense, brain-altering, mind-bending s*** that lasts a few minutes! While they would ‘think and feel’ like they have spent 10-15 years in a prison hellhole, physiologically they would have just aged a few minutes! Wild, right?

Sid is actually right in talking about the time angle when it comes to the prison time AI - the point of it is not to just simply mess with someones brain. The point is - prison time is meant to not just keep the person away from society but be a period of reflection, punishment, reformation etc - so that when the person comes out of prison they either have reflected and have remorse / have changed or at least are fearful of having to spend that mentally torturous time in confinement should they commit a crime again. now an AI that can for example make a person experience having served 10 years of jail time within minutes could potentially serve the purpose while allowing people to not waste years of their life and save resources for the government. however how ethical / efficient this is, is obviously debatable.
