Not sure if I can agree with your point when we are talking about high end gear. There is a price level starting 1200€/1500€ where technical performance must be very good at the very least. For god sake this things costs 3000€ and it’s comparable to sub 900€ dollar headphones...

@Fisher Man the thing is that you can compensate that with a dac that is not neutral and brings some colour to the sound and makes the neutral expensive headphones into something extraordinary

@Fisher Man I agree to an extent. My most memorable cans all have fucked up tonality (the crazy treble presentation of nanna and the crazy bass staging of argons are good examples), and I genuinely love wierd stuff like that, but what I pick up to just throw on almost always have at least a harmenesq tuning with fantastic timbre and staging

I own an Abyss PHI TC and an Audeze LCD-XC and yes, if the music is not well recorded, there is definitely too much detail. I have the ULTRASONE Edition 15 tested at a trade show, the Edition 15 doesn't sound like the typical high end headphones, for me that's perfectly fine, i had fun with it. The headphones are made in Bavaria, you can get spare parts without any problems and a 5-year guarantee in Germany. Everyone complains that everything comes from China, but if a hand-made headphone from Bavaria does not sound as expected and instead has its own character, it is rated negatively. You have to see the whole package and it is a piece of art. We live in a world where a Gucci backpack costs 10K and nobody complains about value for money.

For 3k they better perform in the same league as a high end ZMF, Abyss, Focal or Hifiman. Detail isn’t everything, tonal balance is more important imho, but technicalities must still justify the price point. Loved the reference to Tyll!

Tbh, I think any headphone over $1500 needs to have exceptional detail and technical performance. If you think about it, that's really what separates the flagships from the rest of the market. The Utopia, lcd-4, Susvara, HD800S, etc - it's their extraordinary detail retrieval that puts them in that upper echelon.

Thank you for the review, Andrew. Ultrasone sits near Munich, at the „Starnberger See“. A lake where the rich and the famous + the wannabe’s, have their houses. You can expect them to sell a ton of stuff to some not well informed people. It just needs to look special and come with a very high price tag ;) So no need to be that diplomatic LoL.

Am I the only one wondering how Ultrasone is still in business? I don't see many people buying them on any of the forums (Headfi, SBAF, Reddit), and I didn't see a single Ultrasone headphone when I went to CanJam RMAF or at multiple meets around Cincinnati. Who is buying their headphones? EDIT: I do like a headphone that has a lot of detail, but it's not necessary to enjoy the music. My favorite headphones are the Focal Utopia, but I don't always need that much detail. Just because I love the Utopia doesn't mean I don't love my Fidelio X2HR, HD600, or Sundara. On the other side, super low levels of detail retrieval are not enjoyable. For example, that was one of the main reasons I sold my Drop Panda.

An answer to your question my friend. What i want from a pair of headphones? I want to enjoy my music every time I wear them. No, I don't want crazy detail. I just want to have a beautiful music journey. To dance, to feel the music without destruction. That's the goal. And I know we all hear different. That's why there are so many opposite opinions about the sound of a specific pair of cans. I wish we could hear many sets to decide which one is perfect for our music taste. Unfortunately we can. The reason I move up in price is that I'm chasing after some combination of stage, frequency response, and resolution; typically, if the resolution isn't up to a certain standard at a given price point I skip on that headphone. It seems like to me that the Meze Empyrean is a better headphone than the Ultrasone Edition 15, and I wouldn't pick up the Empyrean over a Clear or Arya.
@jeffchapman6280

@robaba82
@robaba82 3 жыл бұрын
@@jeffchapman6280 I'm sorry if this drags on a bit long, but I wanna be thorough; the Empyrean is a noticeable step down in resolution at $3000 MSRP versus the Arya and Clear to my ear, and at that price I could buy several other things like Verite Closed, RAD-0, etc. The Empyrean is $1000 sound quality $5000 build quality headphone to me. The sound signature I do enjoy, but what you call full I consider to be leaning on muddy; definitely more of a flavor pick. I prefer the frequency response of both the Arya and Clear to the Empyrean unless I want to hear the Empyrean specifically. The biggest nail in the coffin to me is the mid-range resolution on the Empyrean, it's extremely lacking for the price, and I really like my mids. The Empyrean literally sounds better off Spotify than it does on Roon + HQPlayer upscaled to 768kHz, that's a really bad sign to me.

I enjoyed the later closed back veritas model, needs to pair with a warm amp. The used market has some great pricing due to the difficulty of selling ultrasone. Additionally, these days I seek the quality of tone more than anything.

FR is top consideration to me. I do EQ but the less I have to the happier I am. Especially because my wife taps into my collection regularly and she cannot be bothered to EQ. Thus she would prefer an Ananda over a DCA AFO RT while I’m the opposite (but only if I’m at my desk and can load up my EQ profile) Edit Also, for $3k, if I felt that there was such a thing as too much detail, is there an argument to be made to own anything but a Meze Empyrean?

Personally I look for details and tonality first. Then comes the soundstage. Equally important is the build quality. One of these features can stand out, but not so much as to completely negate other features ("one trick pony"). A distorsion measurement based on the listening volume? Nice. Hope it stays as permanent feature in the future reviews. Well done on the review, this must not have been as easy as Focal Celestee. :D

Bismillah So glad you reviewed these. I guessed you would not like them. Even though you didn’t like them you were fair. I assumed you would not like them because they are different from the standard “audiophile” headphone. One thing to consider in your reviews is that the standard audiophile performance is not reflective of everyone’s taste or goals. For the hobbyist once you have heard and owned a number of “audiophile” headphones some start looking for something unique. The Edition 15 is that for me - something unique and worth owning in a collection of headphones. The S Logic for me creates a unique image that results in a relatively snappy leading edge followed by a floating transient. It really is very unique and beautiful. I don’t find the tuning to be overly bassy or thick compared to many other headphones like the B&W P9, or CFA Cascades or even Audeze LCD X. In fact I would say the tuning really enhances male vocals. It’s all relative to what headphones you listen to. Either way I find the Edition 15 to be a very unique and pleasant listen.

Bismillah Detail is key for me but not in the conventional way. For the critical listener detail is the end goal, but the question is: what do you want to hear? Not everyone is chasing “realism” (although I would argue we don’t really know what is an accurate representation of the track unless we were there or unless we talk to the engineer). For example, I often like some sounds accentuated to hear details that aren’t normally obvious, like resonances.These are also details. At the end of the day it’s all about what sounds good to the listener and as you know this is very subjective.

Man I like Ultrasone. I got a pair of HFI 700 around 2005 before I deployed to Iraq and used them all the time when I wasn't on mission. They had a punchy bass and clear highs and I really liked them. I still use them to this day. I recently bought a pair of 900i by them and am loving them as well so far. I am also an Audeze fan with 5 different pair and while they are awesome as well I still am more excited to use my Ultrasone for closed back gaming. The exception to that is my LCD X though. I still think those are the best pair of headphones I own. Ok just wanted to say that there are people like myself who like Ultrasone and it bums me out all these people in the comments bashing them.

Frequency response is far more important than detail. For example, I have a Utopia which has insane detail and great tuning. At the other end, I also own a BLON BL-05S (~$40) which also has incredible tuning with less detail. As far as enjoyment goes, they are both great. If buying headphones for just enjoyment, imo, you might as well just save your money and stick with the tried and tested lower priced options. As a statement piece, the Utopia is worth it as a technical marvel and for those wanting near perfection from a dynamic driver in terms of performance and one of the most accurate tunings with few compromises (not an easy achievement). Regarding the Ultrasone it is just a luxury good, which will sell on its high price alone. Also the S-Logic stuff is just marketing. To truly get proper soundstage from a headphone with stereo or multichannel sources requires very good DSP algorithms (Waves NX / Waves Abbey Road Studio for stereo and Dolby Atmos for Headphones for multichannel). Those algorithms can be tricky to set up though, so for the most part, most audiophile listeners aren't aware of them.

Quantity of detail is perhaps correlated to listening fatigue, but i don't think it causes it. Rather, it has to do with the means of achieving the details - or in other words, the fashion which the detail retrieval is performed: Is there a wall of sound being shoved into your ear canals; or are the notes presented to you like a buffet, allowing you to pick out each auditory element as you fancy? Is available detail accentuated by a sharply glaring frequency response tuning; or is the resolution mainly due to technical prowess, e.g. transient response, microdynamics, clarity? Another interesting question: Can too few details and/or lack of resolution also bring about listening fatigue? The argument for this is thus: In reality, sounds have oodles of information; such as overtones, reverb and reflections, resonances from the body of instruments, ADSR etc. Now, when we listen through a audio system (especially a subpar one), a lot of this information will be absent. Our brains, meanwhile, will be left unsatisfied by this, and will have our ears strain to hear the missing information we expect to be present. Somewhat like how we squint our eyes when reading small text in a badly pixelated, low resolution image.

I find the comparison of audio to video interesting related to your question of "how good is good enough". You can look at current display technologies, 4K is now standard over 1080p in raw resolution but watching high bit rate 1080p on a 4K display is much more enjoyable and realistic than low bit rate 4K on the same display. This relates to our quest for higher and higher resolution music, if the source is a 720p pixelated mess it's still going to "sound" like crap upscaled to 4K HDR. Differences can be also seen with display technologies, take perfect blacks of OLED or the extreme brightness and saturation of QLED technology. This can be related to the different driver technologies we have, I don't think we've reached "OLED black with QLED brightness" peak yet. To think that plasma TV's were the ultimate technology only a few years ago and are now 99% obsolete. I hope, with the help of educational reviews like this, there are real advancements made in the audio hobby. There are a lot more "mythical creatures" in the audio world than in the visual one as far as I can tell. :-)

Especially when it comes to classical music its truely a negative point when for example the strings seem to be like one difference, you cannot even seperate violins from violas and so on. For other music it might be less or even of non importance, but i personally wouldn't purchase a non detailed headphone.

At $3000, a headphone should either be very good in every category except maybe one or be super crazy amazing in at least one way and still pretty good in almost every other way. There should be no serious flaws, and you certainly should not immediately want to pick other headphones that are a third of the price without much thought. Whether or not there's such a thing as too much detail I think is going to come down to the individual listener. Not everyone who buys audio gear does so with the same goal in mind. Some people want to hear literally every detail in a recording, tonality be damned, some have a basic bar for detail that needs to be met, but otherwise care more about finding that perfect tonality, some just want a balance of the two for a price their means can justify, some are forever chasing a unicorn, and some have listened to all of the best of everything, and just want something that sounds different. Personally I don't want to be caught in the "chasing the unicorn" camp, and am actually pretty content with my cheap gear that plays my low bitrate media with a tonality that I like. All that being said, I don't actually consider myself an audiophile in that I haven't spent thousands on gear and a hi-res music library. I watch the content of hobbyists and reviewers like audiophiles and car guys partially for entertainment, partially as a way of living vicariously through them to sate my curiosity of the hobby (unhealthy, I know), but also as a way of keeping up with said hobbies for the future if/when I acquire the means to more actively take part in it.

I've found that overly neutral headphones can get boring, they are usually for mastering which is for working with music not for enjoying it, I think even audio engineers would agree with that. Musicians certainly are shocked that audiophiles are into hearing their music in such a sterile environment, but that is the trend. A lot of lower end gear is actually fine for enjoying music, especially these days, I agree, and well said~

Detail matters, but it also depends on what you want to do with the headphone. If you want to listen casually to low quality material, too much detail just gets in the way. But if you want to listen critically, then yes detail is necessary, especially when you're charging $1k+ for it. However tonality comes first, and having good detail with unnatural tonality isn't enjoyable. To be a real world-class headphone you need to get the tonality right first (or get it close enough that you can EQ it) and then on top of that, have high resolution. Otherwise, it's hard to justify top-tier prices when stuff like the HD650 exists.

f in chat for Ultrasone For the question about detail though, while I personally like to hear every bit of the instruments and vocals, I don't think that details is by any means a necessity to just enjoy music (Especially considering the average consumer doesn't have a single set of resolving headphones). Warm, veiled sound signatures can be pleasant for songs with more pronounced highs or some people enjoy a more compressed sound for certain, less well-mastered tracks. However, when a company commands a four figure price tag on a headphone, then I think it's more justifiable by the consumer to expect a four figure level of technical performance. Either solid detail to match the competition, or maybe a little under others in the price category plus something interesting to set itself apart from the rest.

There's the right FR for pretty much everyone at any price point, I'm pretty sure you can find the same FR of this Ultrasone in some shitty $30 true wireless bud since there's thousands of those. Everything else from Build, comfort, materials and technical performance are the only reason to pay a higher price.

Disagree with this review. For me it actually sounds better than the Abyss 1266. Also think he's off base with his comparisons. I think he may have HF loss, as the Focal phones sound tinny by comparison.

Regarding HF loss, I often find myself asking that question with a lot reviewers in the hifi space. I found focal's offerrings tinny and bright to the point of pain as well, and they need a warm source to even them out. Thank goodness not everything is tuned that way, yet.

Sure is a pretty headphone, but sound is what really matters. Hard pass on that one. Thanks for the review, as I have always been curious about that brand. They never get talked about in the circles I frequent, and now I know why.

Who buys ultrasone headphones? The company isn't out of business, so I really wonder who is keeping them afloat. Maybe it is a non-english speaking audience so we don't hear about it. I see them as the perpetual underdog, and I demo them whenever I can hoping to find a gem here or there, but it has yet to happen. The Edition 8EX was warm a bassy, like a warm hug, which can be nice, but the price was insane (over 2000 usd).

Ultrasone Signature Pro are amazing closed headphones though. Sturdy, portable, extremely well build, very detailed and clinical sound. Good well defined bass response, great separation. I liked them a lot, and they are often available for under 700 bucks. But as I said, very analytical, no headphones for warm entertainment. The rest of their line up sucks though, unfortunately.

A headphone does not have to have detail, but it does have to have the right frequency response. If it is bloated, harsh ,or wildly sharp there is no way.

Details is very important!! Having a lot of details and noticeable imperfection in the music makes it sound very natural thus giving you much more heightened sense of reality. Other technical aspects of sound quality will be affected not just by the driver but also the overall architectural built to it but details is definitely heavily affected by the quality of the drivers, which are much more difficult to manufacture that's why high end flagship headphones should be crazy detailed headphones. If not then it should be made out of gold.

As a German myself it's a shame.😂 But those guys are from Bavaria, that's the part of Germany which are the most Klischee. Not like sennheiser or Beyerdynamic. Would be interesting what you guys think of German audio company's in general. Feel free to share your experience 🍻

For me detail is not my first priority. When I come back from work I just want to put on the headphones and enjoy my music. Super detailed headphones are like Mike Tyson while musical ones are the Muhammed Ali. They punch you with a smile in your face.

Detail for me not everything, i do not own the highest quality headphones but for music i like more my ndh20 instead Elegia.Because that midrange-vocal tuning buy me all the time.Or i like more hd600-660s against Zeus or Sundara.But i like more my single player games with the Elegia because the soundstage and better detail,i feel like more in the game(i dont like multi games).We are different and its ok.But i never get those ultrasone headphones why they are pricy and i think dont look good too.Keep the good work ✌🏻🙂

At this price range it's usually a feature of most headphone totl’s to be super detailed. It's almost something that I think most people expect. But if the technology works it may be something that perhaps adds to that value. Who knows? I'm not sure Andrew would be able to detect and appreciate that technology if it existed. Reviewers like Andrew often will somehow overlook the special sound a headphone may give. I was surprised to see it with the Harmonicdyne headphones. They seemed to be very focused on frequency response and somehow they miss other sound features of the headphone. Also I'm careful of the word muddy. There have been headphones that have sounded very good that were described as muddy. What I'm concerned about is does it sound dark? Especially with that rise in the mid-range. I find dark headphones very hard to appreciate. They remind me of the dark cheap headphones will sometimes have because they lack fidelity.
