I’ve found that I could also extend the life of dying headphones (cups don’t seal well anymore, too much exposure to high humidity over many years weakening the drivers, etc), making it much more tolerable to save up another few months to buy quality (this means $150-$500 for me) rather than having to settle for the junk available from Best Buy that’s within my non-budgeted funds (this means under $50 for me….. unless I’ve already spent my “walking around money” that pay cycle - I’m extremely frugal, so while $5k headphones could be within my budget I tend to pinch pennies like my income was a tenth of what it is, which is why I ride a 20 year old motorcycle but paid cash for my sister in laws first car as a graduation present). For $20 headphones there’s just nothing to work with though - a basic life lesson I learned a long time ago was to figure out if something was an asset that should be invested in or a consumable that shouldn’t be. Shoes are the best example of that: a $100 pair of Oxfords may look the same to an untrained eye as a $5000 bespoke pair, but that bespoke pair will last the rest of your life with even moderate care, while the cheap ones ought to be replaced every year while never feeling anywhere near as comfortable. Even at the $500 price point you can get a pair that should last decades (while being re-soled many times, of course), making this an example where buying quality actually saves you money over time.

I love to EQ my headphones. What I recommend is doing it with SineGen and Fabfilter Pro-Q3 (you can load Pro-Q3 in APO, since it works as VST host too). First reduce peaks, then sweep and even it out as much as possible. Later you can tweak your sound further. It's incredible how much some headphones improve, it is literally night and day.

Tiny extra tip: The Peace GUI (shown in the video) has the "Effects" section. I recommend at least playing around with the crossfeed options. Some music can sound weird on headphones if they are panned very strongly left and right for the different instruments. Especially older rock, blues, country etc. was often mixed with speakers in mind, and with speakers the sound radiates around the room, naturally reaching both your ears. With headphones that doesn't happen, and you might hear this as an extreme stereo effect. Playing around with crossfeed options lets you manually "bleed" some sound between the earcups, which can lead to a much more natural feeling. The Peace GUI Effects section has some manual crossfeed options, but I've just used the Jan Meier crossfeed filter option which sounds the most natural to my ears.

Brah, I feel what you (EQers in general) don't get is that many people don't wish to EQ because adherence to a target is not the most important thing for them. Take me, I value sound stage and imaging most. Then dynamics, then timbre. I know that certain elements of a can's frequency response are crucial to it staging how it was intended to - I'm not gonna mess with that. I appreciate what you're trying to do, free "performance". But I haven't seen you mention this as a reason to not EQ, and thought it was worth saying. Much love and keep up the good work, my dude!

So great start at finding what you like, but what headphone would you suggest as a base to test Elix 5k out on. I assume something flat and neutral like a hd560s or would you recommend another headphone as a bare bones base with these EQ settings on top to find your preference? Been trying to find the right sounding headphone but only found a few misses. Example: hd560s - happy with detail - really fatiguing in the highs for me so I had to return them. Now I'm looking at 20 different Sennheiser numbers like "ummm, where do I go from here?" Every reviewer and person likes a different sound signature so how do I find a solid pair of warm, cool, or mid or flat example as a start to finding what I would like? Reviews can't come as close as hearing the difference for yourself, so should there be a base headphone people should get? Then have a video showcasing all elix 5k presets where we could make a solid choice based off of that sound to find our match? Then we can all hear the difference for ourselves? Just guessing/troubleshooting how we could all collectively find one's preference to sound. Maybe it's not that easy...and sound stage would be different on each too!!! Oh well, I tried. lol. I guess the only answer is to buy 5 headphones and return 4?

Hi Andrew! Really enjoy your reviews and analytical approach. Recently bought Audeze LCD-x and Qudelex 5k. Can’t seem to find a link to your suggested eq values. Can you please provide a link, with the an eye towards using the 5k for eq? Also just bought the Maxwell’s…Wow to both Audeze products! Thanks!

The best (or worst) thing about eq is no amount of money can buy you the flexibility and utility of it (on many platforms at least) and so you have to experiment with it yourself... Which I think is "pure" in its own right

He is right. I have the Qudelix DAC/Amp. It has resurrected my Noble Savanna IEMs. They were a little thin on midrange and bass, though with good resolution. Judicious EQ makes them quite good and in my rotation with other units. And the Qudelix is CHEAP! Run, do not walk and get one!

You made me buy the Qudelix 5K. Waiting for it to arrive. iPhones have some presets, not EQ and 3th party players are pretty much banned. This device should circumvent it since they apply the EQ on the Qudelix, not the iPhone. Moreover I bought the HD560S, sounds mediocre compared to my (previously owned) Sundara and my IEM's (inclding Cadenza's, go figure). But if you can EQ the massive 10 kHz drop, it may sound reasonable. I'll keep you updated when it's here.

great advices from one of my best audio reference guys online :) however my main issue is that I listen using several different "situations", not only with a laptop (or my laptop, as I can use my work one too using streaming services), or with a phone connected to a dongle or with a full hi-fi setup in my room... I can definitely spend hours to create my preferred eq profiles on APO or Qudelix for my headphones/IEMs but then I'll switch to another device and no more eq will be available... so I think I just give up and prefer to enjoy the different flavours of each IEM/headhone in their stock setting, even if I would really like to dedicate some serious time on eq... I might do it just for certain setups - anyway thanks for the video!

Part of the journey. With time you'll realize why it was that you liked the profile and why it was that you also liked turning it off depending on context. Can be a bit overwhelming at first, but it's one of those things that takes time until one day you find yourself knowing exactly what you want to modify without really having an idea how you know it.

EQ made my Sennheiser HD700 into an amazing headphone, tuned to my own preference. Prior to EQ, it needed a tube amp and pure litz copper cable to smooth out the treble peaks. With EQ, it now has great bass and smooth upper mids, while retaining most of the incredible soundstage, imaging, and details of the HD700. HD700 remains one of my favorite headphones and is the most comfortable headphone by far. EQ needs to be done correctly though. If done improperly, you can really mess up the sound quality and technicalities of the headphone or IEM.

I love my Philips Audio SHP 9600 but I often auto EQ to the Harmon over ear target with Wavelet on android and equalizer APO ( with the peace interface) on PC. It's good either way but it feels like two different headphones. I've also tried EQing my Shure SE215s and yeah there's no saving those. They are sibilant and harsh no matter what and if you kill all the treble it will just sound terrible in a new way. Basically buy good headphones you like and can afford and then when it comes to EQ, for lack of a better term fuck around and find out.

I am yet to find any plugin or an EQ profile for the HD800S that can do what Cayin's HA-3A tube amp can (for this headphone specifically). Simply adding bass via EQ destroys the soundstage to my ears. Only a good quality tube amp can bring about a desirable sound profile while preserving or even enhancing its soundstaging capabilities! Once the HD800S becomes listenable, it's audio crack.

IMHO, though you think you don't need it, you need eq, not only to tweak your system if it's not the best of the best, but also to improve the quality of not so good recordings. If you don't use it, you're limited to spend a lot in expensive gear and to listen only to several audiophile recordings. Crucial when playing with "shuffle" on.
