@Gary Wordsworth - Teddy Teabag, or Side-bite as Shelby was known to call him, is certainly not forgotten by those of us who were following sports car racing in the sixties. He and Phil Remington probably contributed more than anyone to the GT40 program, not to mention the Cobra and GT350 development. WWII Tank Commander, self taught engineer and outstanding driver, Ken Miles was a great part of the Shelby American enterprise and a very dear friend to Shelby. I believe his loss had a much bigger impact on Carroll than most people realized.

Gurney and Foyt. 1967. Legends. Both built and drove their cars to victories that year...Foyt in his Coyote at Indy, Gurney in his Eagle at Spa. Both win LeMans Hard to imagine that happening today.

Sports Car Racing was at a pinnacle for the Time and A lot of things were being Panned out and compensated for For the first Time they were dealing with power exceeding handling capabilities that lead to higer risks on the track for the drivers and pioneers of the sport. And other greats that we lost who I never got to watch race on the track. God Bless The Greats Of Motor Racing. Miles, McDonald, Donahue, Walther, Hall, McClaren and others, we will never forget.my favorite and not famous, (Hal Keck northeast SCCA A Production cobra,a privateer and U.S. Veteran who just drove fearless sometimes going off the track passing people. as I watched as a 8 year old kid.

Bandini his mian foe at Ferrari died a year later. Mclaren his teammate died 2 years later. They all could have done a lot of things but that's racing. Surprisingly, Shelby with his myriad of health problems would outlive almost all his contemporaries. Passing away in 2012.

As a life long Ford guy I've got to say that this was one of the greatest automotive stories in my lifetime. I can remember how hard it was to find information on Ford's development program and on the races as they would progress. The Ford MkII was a beautiful car and one of my favorites until that MkIV was introduced. I'm so glad that I was alive to witness this amazing story in Ford's racing history. Today's complexities don't allow for stories like this to happen.

They even built their own car and won first time! And VW did the same thing last year. So huge manufacturers with unlimited funds can still come in and crush the little guys even today. What doesn't really happen so much anymore is the underdogs holding off the giants for a few years like Ferarri did to Ford in the 60's.

They brought this car on tour in 1967 to ford dealerships l was 19 at the time l asked the tour manager if l could set in it and to my surprise he said ok all l could say was wow. What an iconic car and what a great driver Dan Gurany and AJ Foyt were.

@@mikegroat7732 - Yes it was! The ironic part is that the Ford/Ferrari battle may have started well before 1964. It is quite possible that a B-24 Liberator Bomber made in the Ford Willow Run plant could have bombed Ferrari's factory in WWII ! Something like 56 minutes to completely assemble a bomber and roll it out the doors! Quite amazing.

Between Dan Gurney's(RIP Dan)great victory at the Belgium GP, AJ's win at Indianapolis 500, and the historic win by both of them at Lemans, it was a great time to be an American.

It's really based on a British chassis. So, not sure about that statement. It's not like Ford all of sudden developed a spontaneous understanding of how to make a high-performance race car. Just look at the mustang, and even to this day, the Ford cars that perform are all engineered in Germany. I mean, there is a reason why Ford tried to buy Ferrari. The truth is that racing is just not part of American culture.

Yeah but if we're completely honest about this car it was a British designed car (Lola Mk6) it had Lotus design suspension Italian brakes I believe the only thing "Ford" about it was the engine. Ford basically bought the cars from Lola and then just modified them. So they're not really Ford's cars there's somebody else's cars that Ford modified. Much like if I go out and buy a Ferrari and then I modify and try to say I'll look at the car that I built because it has my badge on it. Sure it has my name on it but I didn't build it

There were some incredible drivers in that time. These men drove the cars. Rpm’s, traction, braking, every input to the controls of the race car came from them. Not to mention the courage it took to race in those days. They were the greats.

Please remember that the '66 1-2-3 victory was using Lola-based cars. So call it an "American" car is a stretch.

@@dougball328if you knew the truth you would've never said that. The Lola mk6 was only an inspiration for the GT40. They shared nothing after the first two mules were built for testing in England to sort out the engine/trans and suspension components. The body was completely designed in Dearborn with no Lola having ever been seen by the design team. If the GT40 actually were a Lola chassis, Broadley would've sued Ford for sure. But that never happened now did it?

Ford could simply pump in the GT40 development program double the money he offered to acquire the entire Ferrari car company, while Ferrari, while competing in F1 as his primary effort, run in the World Sportscar Championship on a VERY strict budget (see the history of the "P" cars, all the frames not destroyed during the races were modified in the successive iterations The 250P became the 275P and 330P of the subsequent years, the 330 P2 became P3, P4 and 412P, still the 512M was a "P" car). I don't think Ferrari was particularly surprised that someone that could spend "n" times his budget could win a race.

I saw Ford win in 1966 while on leave from the Army in Germany 64-66, standing at the beginning of the ?Mulsanne straight you could hear those cars long after they had disappeared and the wowing harmonics of the engines as they wound them out was the only place I have ever heard that.

Among his many motorsport accolades Shelby was also a Le Man's 24 Hour winning driver himself in 1959 driving an Aston Martin DBR1. This of course added to his immense depth of knowledge when heading up the GT40 program... something overlooked in 'Ford vs Ferrari'.

Donohue and Follmer are often overlooked. It was Donohue who came up with the way to demonstrate the various accel, decel and cornering forces with his famous "Tire Circle" diagram still used today (for describing overall car performance)...but I'm sure you'll know that. Such a shame he was killed in Austria.

Growing up in the late 60s early 70s my entire neighborhood was Ford. Their victory over Ferrari was why. I remain Ford guy to this day for three reasons. AC Cobra, Daytona Coupe, and the Mach IV.

@K C Snow - I'm a Ford guy of many years, but a car guy at heart! My favorite road racing machine of all is the incredible and completely awesome (a word way over used by today's youth, but very appropriate when describing this car) Porsche 917/30 KL Can Am 'Panzer' car. I'm also proud that a famous American driver and graduate Engineer, Mark Donohue, was asked by Porsche to work with them on developing this car. Albert Einstein had little over Dr. Ferdinand Porsche in my book!

Sat in 'vince woodmans' . Was kept at jonathan buncombes garage in highbridge for a while. In the showroom . Really enjoyed cleaning it. Truly amazing ... and ridiculously low... easiest roof i ever polished.

Although a lot of the world today is anti American it forgets that this time and the cars it produced were the greatest in the world. The legend of the GT40 was born and continues today. The world should remember just what America has contributed to racing and the world in general. GT40s rule YAH!!

Never mind the engine. The GT40 was a British car conceived by British engineers, developed by them and with the engine tuned by them. Nobody has ever disputed the origins of the engine but that might be the least important factor. Equally, nobody disputes the fact that the Mk IV was all-American, just like its driver team.

The 3 times world champion Ferrari stratos? Erm thats not right is it? The 6 times world champion fiat delta integrale? Sounds a bit wrong to me? A formula Yamaha 1600? They used to call them formula fords a few years back, when did that change? Oh it didn't. Them all American airplanes that used rolls Royce engines? They must be British planes not American, obviously. Lets face it, there's not much American in the American people let alone the world, you're made of brits whe betrayed the British, Irish, Italians, germans, french, and a light sprinkle of American bred people. Your country hasn't existed long enough to evolve that far from where you started. (Mostly Europe)

@@johncollins8234 and at the circuit de la sarthe the body is as important as as the engine, as the British brakes were too. Being a circuit of long straights and slow corners, low drag is vital as is brakes to cope, the mainreasons jaguar were so successful in the 50s, low drag and far superior brakes dispite the Mercedes arguably better engine.

This is a great video. I hope people take note of the fact that the Mk IV is NOT a GT40! The GT40 evolved from the Lola Mk 6 GT. The Mk IV was a clean sheet of paper design and created and built in Dearborn by Ford and Kar Kraft. Its aluminum honeycomb monocoque was Ford Aerospace technology. In fact, the Mk IV was about 1" lower than the GT40/MK II. This video should put to rest the idea that the MK IV is a GT40.

Gurney was meeting and greeting at "The Point" one year, with that car, and a few others. Notice the bump in the roof, to accommodate for his height. Only his car had that feature. What a great, and humble guy, a true American icon and Patriot.🇺🇸

I had the honor of working with Moses Nowland back in the early 2000's while he was part of Ford Racing. We did some NASCAR work that was pretty interesting. But nothing like this program.

Been to Le Mans races for years and loved each one of them. Huge circuit, tons of racing fans from all over the world, lots of drinking 👍🏻 and a carnival atmosphere with tons of food/booze/clothing/racing gadget kiosks and a giant Ferris wheel! Fun times. My mom’s side of the family is from Normandy so the drive south to the city of Le Mans isn’t too bad. If ever in 🇫🇷, definitely check it out. Worth it.

@Ronald Reagan - My sister took me to Le Mans for my 60th birthday in 2009, when Peugeot finally logged a win. Great history there for sure, but I have to say it was a big disappointment to find out you were not allowed on the Mulsanne Straight. The museum was very cool.

The car was bald from Lola it was a Lola Mark 6 in Ford just modified it you know I already had a Ford engine in it as for the drivers nearly every driver of that car was European with the exception of two or three I think other than that they were all European drivers. Every Ford GT that has ever been put out has been designed by Europeans and for the most part raced by Europeans. As a whole Americans don't have a knack for anything outside of circle or oval track. Now I'm not saying all American Racers can't do road courses I'm just saying as a whole that Europeans are much much better. As an American and driver I can say that honestly.

RED S7VN - The GT40 wasn't a Lola at all! The GT40 design was "loosely" based on the Lola Mark 6. Not "every" Ford GT was designed by Europeans - they had no involvement at all in the GT MKIV - total American design and won with American drivers. I have read more stories about the exaggerated British opinions saying they were all but totally responsible for the Ford GT successes. That is pure bull! Finally, there have been far more than just a few great American road racers - not oval or circle track, but real road courses. Drivers like Jim Hall, Mark Donohue, Parnelli Jones, Mario Andretti, Phil Hill - 1961 F1 Champion. Obviously road racing was created in Europe and it was the very first type of auto racing in the world, so Europeans have been at it longer and embrace it more strongly than Americans. That said, don't be so quick to downplay American involvement and successes in traditional road racing.

@@Loulovesspeed that's where you're completely 100% wrong see what happened was the Lola Mark 6 was already a established race car in Ford ordered six of them 6 total and that is what the GT40 was built on an already existing car. For didn't know development no research know nothing they just bought the cars and then modified them. In fact the car is didn't even do well to begin with and then once they went to Shelby they were modified some more but at the heart of the car it was still a Lola chassis and for the most part the Lola body. you can kid yourself all you want you can believe all the BS hype that people talk about how Ford develop this and for develop that but the 1-2-3 finish at Lemans was a modified Lola Mark 6 nothing more nothing less. It's no different then what Hennessy did with the Lotus Elise they extended it ramped up the motor and called it a Venom. It's still not their car it's a Lotus Elise that's been modified. It's no different than what Lingenfelter did to Corvette. They take an existing car and modify it. Yes the last rendition of the Ford GT was it the Mark 6 I think was about as close as Ford got to developing their own car 80% of that car was Ford development.

The last rendition of the Ford GT was the MKIV, not mark 6 and Ford designed and built 100% of it. Henry Ford II being the proud American that he was and having his name on the vehicle, wanted it to be a complete American victory, so he had Shelby and others come up with two of the best American drivers, Dan Gurney and A J Foyt to drive it. The last thing he wanted to hear was your American car won because it was piloted by superior European drivers! The margin of victory over Ferrari was 4 laps, or over 32 miles. The #1 GT also covered more miles in 24 hrs than any car previously. You are entitled to your own thoughts, but you can't argue with written history!

@@Loulovesspeed I stand corrected it was the Mark 4 when I was thinking about it I got it twisted up in my head with the Roman numerals I do apologize. Ask for the mark for no it was not 100% completely American designed it still had earlier GT in it they only did about 80% of the car now that's a lot but only 80% of that car was new design so that meant 20% of the car still had old Lola/GT in it. All 4 GTS Mark 1 through 3 were built in England. The Mk IV wasn't even built by Ford the entire car minus the drivetrain was built by Kar Kraft. now before anyone jumps up and down and raises her hand and says but Kar Kraft is a Ford Company.... No it wasn't at the time it was an independent company.

Ford winning Le Mans in '66 and '67 with an unlimited budget has always reminded me of the Apollo moon space program...there were several years in the late 60's where the Apollo program had an unlimited budget...and of course with the backing of the U.S. Govt., it literally was unlimited (an old Ford guy and recently retired multi degreed Engineer with America's largest defense contractor).

Ford pumped in the GT40 development program double the money he offered to acquire the entire Ferrari car company, while Ferrari, while competing in F1 as his primary effort, run in the World Sportscar Championship on a VERY strict budget (see the history of the "P" cars, all the frames not destroyed during the races were modified in the successive iterations The 250P became the 275P and 330P of the subsequent years, the 330 P2 became P3, P4 and 412P, still the 512M, that would have smoked any GT40, was a "P" car). It was impossible for Ferrari to think to develop a completely new chassis to run in just two races, like Ford did for the Mk IV.

@Womb Raider - You quite obviously weren't alive to experience Ford's effort to win Le Mans in the 60s. You could, however, read about it before you make such a strong, uneducated comment as that. When the Deuce's efforts to buy Ferrari failed he was bound and determined to win that historic event at any cost. That was the first time in history that a major manufacturer made a monumental financial commitment with NO COST CONSTRAINTS. Ford's decision cost the company over $1 billion in today's money. No other company at that time spent anything even remotely close to that. Read :Go Like Hell" by A.J. Baime and you'll have a much clearer and realistic idea of just what Ford sacrificed to win the greatest endurance race in the world and beat his foe, Enzo Ferrari.

hi dere No problem, Superformace still builds them, not really replicas, they are fully licensed real continuation production with serial numbers in sequence with the originals. Other companies like Race Car Replicas build an excellent replicar, the Mk1, Mk2 and the US built Mk4. RCR built the GT40s used in the Fast and Furious movie.

Our Car culture is gone apparently it’s all in the past. With the exception of Tesla but Elon Musk although an American citizen now he’s really from South Africa. Where are the American born designers and styles? Gone with the Wind!

@Sam Adams Actually you're wrong, as Fords' racing history goes back to before Lola Cars was even a thought! Fords' racing history goes back to 1902, and the racer that he and another engineer designed and built themselves was "999". He even built the 18 liter 4 cylinder race engine himself! LOL!

It was racing alone in its class, since none had the budget to build 50 5 litres mid engined "sportscars". Prototypes not only were limited to 3 litres but had fuel limitations too.

Ford beat Porsche those last two years. The rule change in '68 was designed to finally give Poesche the outright victory they had been taking baby steps to achieve for over a decade. In 1969 Ford beat the 917 too but that was its first year so unlike everyone bashing Ford about losing their first try, I give Porsche a pass on that one.

Ford Total Performance has never been equalled. Winning at Indy with a Ford designed and built engine (Jim Clark, AJ Foyt and Mario Andretti), F1 several times over with it's Ford funded Cosworth engines, Le Mans overall: 4 times with the GT40, once with John Weir again and a young Derek Bell in the id 70's, Frenchman Jean Rondeu in a car of his own designed powered by a Ford/Cosworth engine and Hand/Muller/Seabass class win in 2016. Casey Luna fielded the only Ford powered Winged Sprint Car and won a championship with it. Not to mention giving Shirley Muldowney's first Funny Car victory. WRC titles from the Ford Falcon to the Ford Focus. Ford rules period.

Add Off Road Baja racing, NASCAR - in 1965 Holman-Moody prepped Ford 427 engines won a record 48 out of 53 races, a record that stands today and most likely will never be broken. Formula Ford - entry level, open wheel, single seater Formula road racers. A major player and winner in the 60s Trans Am series and several other SCCA sportscar classes. Carroll Shelby's GT 350s locked down the SCCA B Production National Championship over the larger engine, 327 Corvette 3 straight years, '65,'66 and '67. Never mind other American companies, none come close to Fords' involvement and successes in more types of racing, on an international basis - including European companies! My favorite sign at a car show introducing Shelby's Cobra roadster. It simply said....Ford -" Improving the breed through open competition". Hell, for that matter, Ford was founded on a racing machine, the 1902 "999" beat a Winton Six in a race in Michigan and Henry Ford started The Ford Motor Co. 2 weeks later. GM and Chrysler, eat your hearts out!

My wife is not at all interested in cars or racing. She did, however, go to Ford vs. Ferrari with me. During the sequence about the Daytona win, when Miles was pressing the GT40 toward the win, she was grabbing my arm and squeezing “go, go, go, Miles, go”. It was/is a great movie. The racing world lost a lot when Miles died.

Pulsonar - What happened? Technology and just too much emphasis on money! It was a slim point in time when desire, attitude and good old American ingenuity made it possible for a single man and his band of hot rod gear heads to build a world class beating machine. Sadly, this can never happen again. I'm sure glad that I lived through that time as a 17 year old car nut, and coincidently, a Ford fan!

I have this car in GT Sport, exclusively on the Sony Playstation 4. And it drives like a dream. An animal if pushed too hard but yet still restrained. Going through the shifts is smooth and the driving visibility is great. Going through up to 6500 RPM and the car is singing. Pure V8 and a true Ford GT. The only other car in its class that gives it a proper competitive edge is that pesky red Ferrari but this car wins and when it does it wins in pure style and power.

@Dohc SMR - Every word you said is absolutely the truth. All I hear from the Brits is Miles doesn't get the credit he deserves. Maybe not in England, but he sure as hell gets it here in the U.S! If it hadn't been for Phil Remington, Ford might not have won in '66. Phil's many contributions to the program cannot be overstated!
