Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that India has achieved its target of blending 10% sugarcane-extracted ethanol in petrol, ahead of schedule.
Blending ethanol with petrol to burn less fossil fuel while running vehicles is called ethanol blending. Ethanol is an agricultural by-product which is mainly obtained from the processing of sugar from sugarcane, but also from other sources such as rice husk or maize. Currently, 10% of the petrol that powers your vehicle is ethanol.
With an aim to augment ethanol supplies, the government has allowed procurement of ethanol produced from other sources besides molasses (which is 1G), such as rice straw, wheat straw, corn cobs, corn stover, bagasse, bamboo and woody biomass - or 2G.
Can your vehicle take 2G as fuel? What is the impact on the environment? Why is this important for India? We answer this and much more.

The content mentioned in this video is very constructive. At the same time, politicians and countries of the world should pay close attention to the fact that large amounts of water are being wasted for ethanol production. Especially since India needs nearly 3000 liters of water to produce one liter of ethanol, how to manage it will be the biggest challenge in the future.

get ready for doubling or tripling the price of sugar....Indonesia tried this biofuel stunt with their palm oil, see now, they had to put bans on palm oil export as domestic customers who use palm oil for cooking found price doubling, using food crops for fuel is a terrible idea.

@zion3335

@@prathap2712 No ethanol is not a byproduct, sugars in corn and sugarcane are fermented to produce alcohol called ethanol. So ethanol is the product, instead of carbohydrates, we are getting ethyl alcohol.

Refueling time also needs to be considered. Electricity is no doubt the best when it comes to alternate fuel but it takes really long to charge a vehicle. Refueling with Ethanol or even Hydrogen is quick and easy. So, I guess larger vehicles should be replaced with Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles whereas smaller vehicles should be replaced with EVs.

Ethanol blending is a great plan. (Along with bio cng) As if their is farm produce surplus then it can be diverted to ethanol to support farmers and govt. In any case farm produce is decreased due to bad weather that year blending percentage can be reduced. But benefits are imense 1. Pollution reduce 2. Farmer income increase 3. Waste to wealth 4. Forex saving 5. Job creation for rurals/locals 6. Lesser impact on our economy due to international events.

We achieved 10% blending already, preponed incremental target of 20% blending by 5 years . NITI Ayog is not fool, there are many good scholars present over there, they must have had a plan beforehand before doing all this. So we should be optimistic, instead of relying on theoretical rant of some 'english' professor (whom you're quoting). Policy execution is way different from academia.

I hope this cost is equalised with the cost of importing crude oil from other countries knowing that crude oil prices are getting increased year by year. And this is last video i will see on this ethanol topic because its getting too complicated for me😵

Doubtful if ethanol extraction from rice husk and straw will be economically viable. Most likely that commercial producers will use heavy starch and sugar based raw materials to increase their profits. Hence pushing up prices. Case in point is corn use in the US for the same, dramatically increasing the price of corn which is heavily used in Africa as food.

its not negative, it takes more energy and emissions to grow crops for fuel than burning fossil fuels. also it will increase price of sugar, like happened in indonesia when they tried to use palm oil as biodiesel, it saw cost of cooking double both domestically and globally. @@nish0091 biofuel in present form is largely made by either directly taking away food crops like corn, palm oil, wheat, sugarcane etc, or they are made from industrial corn which is used for animal feed like feeding poultry and dairy cows etc. This is usually done with govt mandate, as food will always be more expensive than fuel, but govt regulation like mandatory ethanol and taxes make the price skewed. This has globally led to food price inflation, even UN research said this, EU has also triying to reduce biodiesel, also biofuel like i said is more environmentally damaging as ethanol emits approx 2.5 times emissions of petroleum.

The whole concept of Metro Rail + Electricity based mass transit is actually based upon decreasing the fossil fuel consumption using Solar Electricity. But unfortunately in India we are seeing failure of Metro Rails one city after another as there has been no study to substantiate the route designs for traffic volume study for the Middle and lower middle classes. Traffics should be stopped at the outskirts of cities, city internal movement should be based upon cycles, electric rickshaws, electric buses. Floating populations of surrounding geographies are one of the largest traveling groups and they should be provided Metro pick-up + vehicle parking at appropriate distances away from cities. Also instead of ring-roads, ring-metros will be more useful. Just create proper city bypass transits.

Scania has a Compression Ignition (CI) engine designed to run on a fuel called ED95 which is 95% Ethanol and 5% Ignition additives which was later tested successfully with MD95 (95% Methanol) The domestic automakers could create a new market by locally designed and built ICE (SI and CI types) that work efficiently with Ethanol and Methanol..

Electric vehicle in India is still a distant dream. Though in metropolitan cities, there will be high sales. The demand and supply will drastically be low in most regions in term of volume. Still 20-30 years to catch up interm of household income.
