Having pirates say "arrgh" comes from a couple of movies in which the actor Robert Newton played a pirate, Treasure Island and Blackbeard the Pirate.

You beat me to it. Robert Newton was a great Brit character actor. He played Bill Sikes in Oliver Twist. He said he got the "arrggh" noise from people who lived in his town when he was a kid In the previous Treasure Island with Wallace Beery, he had a sort of Irish accent. Tying yellow ribbons around oak trees goes back much further than that song, I think that song came out in 1973. A couple years later, I remember seeing yellow ribbons posted around the Seabee base in Port Hueneme, CA, for when a Construction Battalion was about to return home from overseas. That was the first time I saw the small looped yellow ribbons. I think they were also used when hostages were taken at the U.S Embassy in Iran in the late 70s.
@RichWhiteUM2 жыл бұрын
@@markadams7046 Yep, the yellow ribbons go back much farther. The John Wayne movie "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon" came out in 1949 and was set during the Indian Wars in the late 19th Century. The movie's name came from a popular cavalry cadence from that period, which is still used in some variation in the US Army. We used a variant of it when I was in JROTC back in the late '80s to early '90s. If he hasn't already, Lance needs to do a video on the history of the yellow ribbon.

The 'Pirate Accent' has it's origins in film with Robert Newton adopting a generic Westcountry (a region of the UK comprising of Cornwall, Devon, Somerset/Bristol and Dorset) accent for his portrayal of pirates like Long John Silver. Newton grew up in Dorset and Penzance and was almost certainly aware of the region's long association with piracy (and it's adjacent trades - Smuggling and Wrecking). Actors sometimes refer to it as the "Mummerset" accent as it imitates the various accents of the Westcountry without sounding specifically like any of them. In literature there's books and plays like Treasure Island, Jamaica Inn, The Pirates of Penzance, Frenchman's Creek, Poldark and Robinson Crusoe all have associations with the Westcountry. Smuggling was endemic in the region during Piracy's Golden Age - the 640 mile South West Coastpath owes it's existence to Excisemen patrolling the coast looking for smugglers and there are still tunnels, covered tracks and hidden rooms in villages all over the region that were specifically created to support freetrading. Pirates/Privateers like Blackbeard, Sir Francis Drake, Henry Avery, Lady Killigrew (in fact the entire Killigrew family) and smugglers like Zephaniah Job (aka The Smuggler's Banker) and the King of Prussia (who has Prussia Cove named after him) all had their origins in the region too.
