The Mary Celeste: Unveiling the Mystery of an Abandoned Ghost Ship

In November 1872, a Brigantine, a two mast ship called the Mary Celeste, left New York enroute to Genoa in Italy with a cargo full of alcohol, but it never arrived. The mystery surrounding the ship would capture the imagination of millions, helped in part by a hard-up author by the name of Conan Doyle. In this video, Kevin Hicks explores the mystery behind the abandoned ship, the Mary Celeste, and reveals what really might have happened to her.

Fantastic, as usual. Actually, I have a marine-pilot’s license and I recall that if the ship appears to be taking water, the age-old rule-of-thumb is to taste it, precisely because it’s often not sea water but some sort of internal leak. Odd that experienced seamen didn’t think of doing it (or maybe thought it could explode, being alcohol, and chose to keep a safe distance… come to think of it, this could have been the case). It’s quite common, even today, for sailboats to be found abandoned, in nearly pristine condition, with people in them panicking and leaving in the lifeboat and never being seen again.

In one video on the subject, I recall the detail that one of the cargo hatches was found thrown open. This seems to support the alcohol theory: checking the hold after the storm, they discovered it full of fumes, and piled into the lifeboat to wait. A gust of wind may have parted the line towing the boat, and the ship sailed away out of reach.

As a child I was fascinated by the paranormal, UFOs and all that. I lapped up the stories of the MarIE Celeste, as she kept being called, as well as the Bermuda Triangle, Nasca Lines, etc. Now, I find the non-paranormal explanations far more interesting and moving. I'm often surprised if such things come up in conversation just how many people don't want a reasonable explanation. No matter how tragic a true story is, they still find it unappealing unless there's a supernatural angle.

The ship was carrying alcohol which is highly flammable, so some people think that something happened which made the crew think the ship was going to explode, so they might of abandoned ship quickly leaving personal items behind. Ships usually don't sink instantly there is usually some time, enough time to grab their personal items. The only other scenario I can think of, is some kind of insurance fraud which went badly wrong. Purposely damaging ships running them aground and so on, to get the insurance money, this was a big problem in that time period. In truth no one will ever know for sure what happened.

Thanks for a well-researched telling of the mystery of the Mary Celeste, Kevin! Your conclusions as to the crew's fate is possible, though it may seem unlikely that the Captain would have abandoned the vessel for a jolly boat (for transporting crew, I don't think they had lifeboats then) in a storm without a darned good reason. The risk of swamping would be very great. The missing chronometer, sextant and ship's papers would, however, indicate the desire to navigate away from the vessel and seek safety ashore. The several feet of alcohol and water in the hold might have led to the belief that the ship had been holed below the waterline, but the vessel didn't appear to have settled greatly when discovered. It's one of those mysteries that makes a great story and it's always tempting to imagine a dramatic and ghostly solution! Whatever may have occurred, the saddest part of all is that among the ship's complement of eleven souls was Captain Briggs' wife, Sarah, and their 2-year-old daughter, Sophia...

Great summary of the evidence Kevin. I've seen a number of re-creations over the years of the Mary Celeste affair, and another possibility was that there was a danger of fire or explosion from the leaking alcohol vapour. A good reason to take to the ships boat in a wooden sailing ship, but to stay attached with a long cable to allow the vapour to disperse. I hadn't read Conan Doyle's story, but I have now found it in a collection called "The Captain of the Pole-Star". It is available from Project Gutenberg if any of your viewers wish to read it.

Hi Ray, the story Conan Doyle J Habakuk Jephson's Statement is a dark read, probably unacceptable by today's standards, but is what made the Mary Celeste a legend. 👍🏻

Lovecraft's "The Call of Cthulhu," which, like Doyle's work, was a dark and, by modern standards, "problematic" (and which possibly drew upon the earlier story for inspiration). This is an intriguing story. I always love hearing ones about ghost ships. I feel bad for the crew, they had no idea what was happening. Can you imagine the horror of that family, abandoning ship and then realizing that they made the mistake but were unable to get back to safety and then the slow starvation and dehydration leading to a horrible death. That poor man and his wife having to watch their child die and then each succumb to death in a tiny lifeboat. Horrific.

As I understand what could have happened is that fumes from the alcohol built up in the ship during the storm. During a calm moment they took the chance to vent it out, but with how much had built up it was judged to be a danger to the baby on board, so they tied the life boat to the ship and kept a safe distance away. I tought that the barrels leaked and the danger was of fire and an explosion.And the crew got into the lifeboat but had put a line to the ship so if there was no fire they could get back on the ship but bad weather severd the line and they where lost.Nice one young sir.
