Hey there Shoestring. The yard there where you’re at is called “Carnegie”. Looking east toward Bristol, the track furthest off to your left is actually CSX trackage, leased by ETRY. We called this the Carnegie spur, and there was a time we had a LOT of customers there, but the times have changed. The “Carnegie Spur” is the remnant of the old CC&C Railroad that was 90 percent complete complete between Johnson City and Dante and then went bust in 1893. The grade for that line can still be seen today if you know where to look. It was always a treat for me to catch the Johnson City extra Saturday yard job as engineer and we’d go work Johnson City Chemical Co. on the Carnegie Spur.

I’m sure it’s difficult for you not riding but the thing that’s on my mind is just a few years ago Stobe the hobo was lost to us being unable to get clear of a narrow section of rail. He was in much better physical shape both vision and physically he hadn’t been injured in unforeseen circumstances. I keep thinking of those young kids who look up to you and I wonder what effect it would have for them to lose you. Since an engine will travel a long way in five seconds I wonder if you could get clear in time. You have so much knowledge of how trains operate it would be tragic to lose your knowledge of how to choose a train going to a future destination. Something you touched on but I’m still not clear on is how to use a car ID to learn it’s destination. You’ve done it safely for so long that I’d hate to have something happen like so many others before you. I believe you shouldn’t sacrifice a valuable resource lightly. Please be safe. I wonder if you’ve ever considered what it would take to ride safely and even legally. One of my thoughts is having cabooses dispersed along railways that were converted to small group carriers. My thought is if you could hit a call box they could be added on if someone was traveling a route through to a destination. To me the danger mostly lies in boarding a moving train or falling off of precarious cars. I would love to have the ability to enjoy the experience without placing myself or others at risk. Back in the prime of passenger travel there was little risk but extreme enjoyment of the journey. I’d love to hear your thoughts on this.

Not boring. This is the vid I needed to see. I’m not RR man just very interested in how everything works (including you Shoestring). Luv it Shoestring you never cease to amaze me about your broad base of knowledge. I thought I’d learn about the RR but it’s also been weather, science, biology, botany, agriculture, meteorology, cooking, camping, survival, government, and on and on. The 2 subjects you seem to steer away from are the subjects that cause the most arguments - politics & religion. Great Stuff.
