My wife’s laptop. I hitchiked cross country in March/April in 1973. San Diego, Louisville for a bit. Then up to Niagara Falls, and down to NJ. Always wanted to hop a rail car. Got a good job with the power company in Aug. 73’ and that kept me stationary. Married, kids, mortgage. Now my health is poorly. But I found you Shoestring, and I thank you. I thank God for all I do have, and hope you stay healthy, and God Bless you, my Friend!

Thanks for bringing back great memories. I was involved in supplying parts kits for the first four pump stations including Livengood and Coldfoot. Kits were packed in wood crates, sold to Bechtel and eventually to Alyeska Pipeline Service Co. Your tours are excellent and educational.

Used to live just around the corner from there. There wasn't a campground there then, but there used to be a park across the road where the flat spot is now, with a bridge across a little creek with a gravity feed pipe system where we went to fill our water jugs. I stayed on the back side of Cleary Summit, near Chatanika, (about 4 hills away from that campground, as the crow flies) and worked about 6 miles east of the haul road up the middle fork of the Koyekuk just a few miles before Coldfoot for a while. Thanks for letting me see my old stomping grounds again.

Good to see you have somewhere safe to stay and good value. You mentioned Prudhoe Bay. I live not far away from a little town called Prudhoe in Northumberland, UK. I wonder whether people went out there from here a long time ago. (Later addition) Wikipedia says it is named after the Duke of Northumberland aka Lord Prudhoe of Prudhoe Castle in Northumberland UK. Well I never!

When was a draftee stationed at Fort Richardson outside of Anchorage in 1a967, the auction for North Slope lease was held in the only theater downtown Anchorage. After auction ended, the state chartered a 707 to fly check to NY so as not to lose the one day of interest on the money

My grandfather worked the oil fields in the U.S. south, much in Kentucky. He was such a hard worker and so knowledgeable in the business he was offered $100,000 plus higher salary to move to Alaska and work there but he refused it because it of the cold and he was looking to retire. It wasn't long he developed leukemia, probably due to the chemicals he was around in the oil industry, and passed away.
