@The Paradox Destroyer Orban doesnt make it easy, but we are definitely still in the upper half of the world, so I really cant complain, it could be much much worse (Belarus, Venezuela, Cuba, Lebanon, Syria, Afghanistan, etc.). Budapest is getting nicer and nicer, righ now we have the chain bridge closed down for reperations, so huge traffic everyhwere in the city. In terms of sports, our football is getting better and better, we did pretty well at the European championship, and we finished 15th in the Olympic table with 6 gold, 7 silver, 7 bronze, pretty good haul of 20 medals with a population of 10 million I'd say :)

Maybe funny to know, although he only played 3 games for the „Düsseldorfer EG“ here in Germany in the 94 lockout he became quiet a legend to the club too. Fans are telling stories to this date about his short time at the club and he absolutely loved the amazing atmosphere during and after the games

I know he's no Shanahan or even a HoFer but a career vid of John LeClair would be interesting to see. He played a role in the Canadians cup win and that was before he blew up, became the first American born to score 3 consecutive 50 goal seasons, and faced Shanahan in the 97 cup. Idk... I just love the guy and feel he lived in Lindros' shadow

for any career evaluation of a player like shanahan, you have to include his PIMs and "intangible" achievements. A main part of his appeal is he was one of the last true power forwards. He made an impression everywhere he went, even on NYR late in his 30s and most notably when he stood up for Jagr to fight an aggressive Donald Brashear taking liberties. If you ever do another one of these, I think Eric Lindros would be one of the more interesting ones.

Always liked him a lot as a Ranger. Yes he was beyond his prime (as was tradition in NY, and I hope Sather isn't bringing that back) but his snapshot was something to behold. I'll never forget one particular shootout goal in which he snapped the puck top corner so fast it was in the net as fast as I could see his stick move. What a player.

One of my favorite players due to how his skill was complemented by leadership and toughness. My memory could be off, but pretty sure Detroit would have been happy to keep him for longer but he said he wanted to go elsewhere for a fresh start and the Wings respected his decision and let him leave.

I remember when we traded for Shanny. Such a disappointment getting wrecked by the devils in 95'. That deal really pushed us over the hump. Coffey was basically toast by then, and Primeau wasn't really doing much for us (although he seemed to do fairly well for Hartford and then Carolina after.) We were SURE we were getting that cup in 96', then we didn't. But then 97', ohh boy. Good times. Shanny didn't screw around. He got that puck, and put it in the net. Shanny and Feds played so well together. He threw those hands like a pro as well. Having him on 3-26 was legendary. Detroit will always love Shanahan.

It shows mad longevity when you think and realize that Shanahan scored 656 regular season goals during his career while having 'only' 2 50+ goal seasons... I remember him quite well from St. Louis when he played with Brett Hull. Didn't like him that much on Detroit though because I was an Avalanche fan during those times.

Loved watching Shanny as a kid. Wish he would have stayed in Detroit and won another cup. He was a gamer, tough as nails. Could fight anybody. Always loved hearing the Irish Jig in the Joe after he scored

Ahh yes I recall when Shanahan requested a trade in Hartford the franchise was fighting for its life and I was at the games . game 1 team introductions '96-'97 and Shanahan skates out to a standing boos after the story come out he wanted out. However when he was traded for Paul Coffey and Keith Primeau it was a win for both teams . I was a fan of all 3 players. Who wouldn't want Shanahan or Coffey on the team and Primeau soon became the fan favorite and fans were grateful Shanny wasn't traded to Boston. Our then arch rival who Boston press said would have loved to have him. Thank Jimmy Rutherford for that trade. I also met Shanahan after a game in '96 and said we're not gonna let you go that easy and he said to me 'oh really' ha.

Nice career portrait from the Hockey Guy as usual, but I missed comments about PIMs he racked up, and his 17 Gordie Howe hat tricks is (unofficial) all time record. Shanahan amassed more PIMs than some famous enforcers like Lyle Odelein, Basil McRae, Shane Churla, Brad May or Stu Grimson. I understand some of these did not play as much as Shanahan, but he is in a nice company in the most PIMs list.

Kind of sucks they lost Cholowski along the way considering they gave up the pick that became Jakob Chychrun along with Datsyuk just to hit the cap floor. I know his offensive numbers slowed down some and he got more seasoning in Grand Rapids, but it felt like it was about his time to turn it up. Leddy,, Hronek, Cholowski, and Seider have that potential to be a good defensive unit although a very young one. Still can’t help but think both Buium and Edvinsson are a couple years out. Buium is going to Denver though so he should be super solid, meanwhile Edvinsson Is a lot like Broberg from a couple years ago or even Seider, he is so skilled he should be playing up in the SHL but to get him ideal time they kind of loaned him to the SHL1 regulation league. In theory next year I wouldn’t be shocked if he did a full year in the SHL, although Detroit has shown confidence in building guys though the AHL too. They had Zadina play straight up in the AHL, I think if it were me I would probably loan him out to an OHL team so I could keep a close eye on him, although I’d probably do my best to keep him and Raymond on the same development path.

Definitely my favorite Red Wing from the 90's along with Stevie Y and Ozzie. I remember as a kid having Shanahan's card when he was with the Whalers, and wishing he was a Red Wing. It came true the next season and the Wings brought the cup home finally after disappointing ends in '95 and '96. Thanks for the amount of work and information you put into your videos!

As a long time Hartford Whalers/ Carolina Hurricanes fan, I remember the day the Whalers traded Pronger for Shanahan, and I also remember him asking for a trade out of Hartford. You can trace the drafting of Pronger by Burke in 1993, and the subsequent trade for Shanahan directly to the Hurricanes Stanley Cup championship in 2006. Regardless, I wish we would've kept Pronger in Hartford but at least we got a Cup in 2006.

As a Sharks fan I always remember Brendan Shanahan from those early 90's St. Louis Blues who would just crush the Sharks. Shanahan along with Brett Hull would light up the Sharks while Curtis Joseph would shut the door on the Sharks. He was also a beast in Detroit also.

As a Devils fan I remember Shanahan came to camp in 09-10 season and played well in presason. Then decided to retire. He could have kept playing had he wanted to, he was still noticable on the Ice even then.

What a legend, I remember having a sticker album in 93-94 something with a page featuring the 50 goal scorers. I missed two players, one being Shanny. He's forever a part of that legendary run in 02. That's 19 years ago, it's been a while..

I don't remember who said it, but getting Shanahan really helped them get over the top in 1997. As he provided that extra physical presence, and of course it helps he's an amazing hall of fame talent

2001 Detroit went the other way with the younger calls. Hasek, Robitaille and Hull added to the team. It worked though. That year was so much fun. As for his Detroit departure, he was ready to move on and wanted out. It worked out ok for him and great for Detroit. His last two playoffs with them weren’t very good. Appreciate everything he did but was fine with him moving on.

Cuz the other owners (read traditional power franchises) didn't like the inflated salaries StL was willing to put out. It was retribution. Only it was just fine a few years later when Detroit did it.

Give Ken Holland credit for making the trade to bring Shanahan to the Red Wings. He gave up Coffey and Primeau, who were significant players, at that time. I think for that generation of Red Wing teams, that trade to acquire Shanahan was the difference maker. He was the elite power forward of his time. Yzerman & Shanahan played on a line together, that was great combination.

I want to say Scotty Bowman engineered that trade. Trade occurred on Oct. 9, 1996. Holland was named GM on July 18, 1997.

@@SverigeiSverige Shanahan ended up married to his teammate (and supposedly best friend Craig Janney's) wife. That's one of the reasons St Louis traded him, THG is being diplomatic here. Then Shanahan pitched a fit about Hartford being a dump. I know Shanahan comes across as an elder statesman now but he was kind of obnoxious in his youth. At this point he hadn't won anything, remember, so I think that was part of the knock on him. People here keep referencing sleeping with or 'stealing' someone's spouse. What I'm trying to say is, the spouse has to want to cheat, too. Sometimes it's better to be rid of someone like that in the long run, let them go make someone else miserable.

As a Wings fan that grew up during the Dynasty years, I don’t remember there really being a “Detroit really has to get younger” thing during that time. At that time, older players were still impacting the game immensely into their later years. The game was much more about strength, toughness, and experience. Even when Shanahan left, there was still the opinion that we shouldn’t have left him walk…but with Babcock in and Yzerman leaving, Shanahan seemed to want out.

It’s amazing how good that 1994-1995 Blues team was, and they were even spending money left and right. Had Gretzky, Cujo, Shanahan, Hull, Steve Duchesne, Esa Tikkanen, Al Mackinnis, Guy Carboneau, Glenn Anderson. What was ironic about it was the team was so good in front of Cujo they threw him off his game. Cujo and Ryan Miller were both workhorse goalies, the more shots they faced the better they would do night to night. When those two St. Louis teams had those two goalies the system in front of them was so strong it threw the entire goalie’s game off.

Textbook Mike Keenan trade of fan favorite star for unknown, cheap young player. Worked out in the end, but Keenan is still villified in STL to this day for deconstructing a great, fun roster.

Finland won world juniors back in 1987. They did beat some bigger countries like Soviets , Czechoslovakia and USA. So i think it was well deserved victory. It was the team discipline that lost Canada and Soviets the opportunity to win gold. Those young hot heads....

To add more context to the Shanahan trade, Shanahan had a major falling out with the Blues after he slept with Craig Janney's wife. The excuse at the time was the Blues were trying to cut down on money, but Shanahan wasn't well liked by his teammates.

Arbitrators had a vendetta against the Blues back then. They gave up a boat load to get Stevens, but he was an established player who was then named captain. To be forced to give up Stevens for signing an up and coming forward was quite disproportionate.
