Hat trick: Three goals Gordie Howe Hat trick: Goal, Assist, Fight Gary Bettman Hat Trick: Three Lockouts
@FischerFan9 күн бұрын
Are you sure that Gary Bettman hat-trick isn't: Quebec, Winnipeg, and Hartford?
@garymauk29639 күн бұрын
@FischerFan the lockouts especially the 04-05 missed season was 100% the players screwing themselves. Those difficult times are what have lead to the NHL having fiscal sanity a strong partnership between the league and PA. They were worth it. If the players were not run by morons there would not have been lockouts.
@VonOzbourne9 күн бұрын
@@garymauk2963 You work in hedge funds or something? Blaming the players for not wanting to take a pay cut because the owners were too busy tripping over themselves trying to outbid each other for big draw talent sounds like trying to shift fault to the talent. The Salary Cap was put in place to save the owners from themselves, and they still do fiscally irresponsible things to try to circumnavigate their own rules to attempt to gain an advantage. And well, if you'd been paying attention, you might know that the only thing "strong" with the league and PA partnership, is usually the animosity when negotiating. At least the owners were smart enough this time to realize that showcasing the talent at the next olympics was a better look than "protecting their investment" for the regular season gate.
@garymauk29639 күн бұрын
@@VonOzbourne When you go into a negotiation it's best if you have something other than threats and rants. That was all the players had in 04-05. The owners had prepared. The fiscal house of the NHL was out of whack .Bettman lead the charge to get it in order. The players were offered several Cap options before the lock out, they just didn't use the word cap because the players were afraid of it. It would've been around $55 million, the players and their PA reps spent the next year grandstanding, while the NHL told them the longer you wait the worse the offer will be. When the smoke cleared they accepted the Cap and it was about $39 million. The players screwed themselves, they lost a whole season of pay and took a worse deal than they could have otherwise had. The big hurdle was climbed, fiscal sanity restored. Revenue split was still 57 players 43 teams. the next lock out fixed that as we now have 50-50 split. Some owners that have more money would love a system of haves and have nots like baseball, but the NHL is built on parity. The people that get the short end are the top players who get great pay checks ,just not in the same vein as their counterparts in NBA, NFL and MLB, and the lower end players in the NHL are very nicely compensated comparable if not even paid more than their counterparts in the other leagues. It is a business model that works for the NHL and it is the business model that Gary Bettman understood this league needed to be successful. The NHL relies more heavily on tickets and less on TV than the other leagues, It needs each market to be competitive.
@garymauk29638 күн бұрын
@VonOzbourne the owners came prepared and the business needed cost certainty. The players only had the threat of no games offered a measly small pay cut. NHL gave the options summer of 04 all had a cap. Initial it was about 55 million players rejected and after the lock out began Bettman warned them any deal would only get worse. By the time the agreed jn the summer of 05 it was 39 million AND they missed a seasons worth of pay. The league needed the cap and the floor. The business model relies so much more on gate receipts and less on TV money like the other leagues, hence the top players in the NHL do not make anywhere near the top players in the other leagues. But the league has the best parity and top to bottom the players are doing better than ever, owners are doing well, the league has grown in every way. That initial lockout got the league to 57-43 in favor of the players the 12-13 got it to 50 and corrected a few other errors. That CBA pain has been worth it. The NHL is strong because of Bettmans leadership, because he understood the business model that this league works best in.

Bettman's claim to fame in the NBA was to increase revenue by making it the most expensive league to sign licensing deals with. Fortunately for him, some kid named Jordan was really starting to make a name for himself at the time so those deals weren't hard to come by. Unfortunately for NHL fans their sport isn't anywhere near as popular, so in order to make up for the smaller corporate deals, merchandise and ticket prices need to make up a bigger chunk of that desired pie.

Gary Bettman has been an excellent commissioner. It's absurd for people in Canada to claim he hates Canadian teams because a Canadian team has not won since 1993, ignoring the fact that Bettman, from New York, has not had a New York based team (Rangers, Islanders, Sabres) win a Cup since 1994. Bettman is the reason why the Oilers, Flames, Canucks and Senators did not move when they were struggling fiscally. The wheels were already turning on Quebec and Winnipeg possibly relocating when he came in the Commissioner's office. Is anyone perfect no, but I doubt anyone would've done as good a job as Bettman during his tenure. He belongs in the Hall of Fame and should be recognized for the tremendous job he has.
