I was on 50046 on the 13:15 Waterloo to Exeter on 18 July 1991 and have a photo of Ajax next to Glorious as per your clip! A brilliant run, I recall - one of the best I had on that loco and route.

What an absolutely fantastic find this video is. So many memories of those days and how I followed the 50s around where money allowed. I think NSE livery one of the poorer liveries; oh for the glory days of blue-grey and then large logo.

What a feast! Thanks for sharing it out. ‘’And now the two-coach multiple unit with trolley service that can’t move along the aisle and you can’t get to because it’s already standing room only and there’s nowhere else for bags is departing from platform ...’. Or as grandson said, ‘Why don’t the trains have engines, Grandad?’

The building behind the left handed loco in the titles, that is the old signal box isn't it? The window bricking up is very hard to spot but its irked me to know if that was or wasn't the old station box or not. I remember the 50's coming in from Exeter up at Waterloo as I was rostered in the lamp arch at the station so had to service the trains sundries as well as the old oil lamps, stores to go down line etc, wished I had stayed at Waterloo as prob would have kept me job altho we gave the area manager a few acid tummy's some of the pranks we played, usual punishment was to broom sweep the whole concourse as we really did play up down there in the bowels of the old station hehe

Not sure Ian - i did have an old railway video that suggested another use, very good article here www.cornwallrailwaysociety.org.uk/westbury-to-salisbury.html though

Ian - No that was originally a foot warmers building with stores below. it's use in recent years was the location for the fitters and their mess room I've had several great cups of tea in there. The signal boxes came as 2 southern boxes one GWR one. A box was off the end of platform 6 had a flat roof for most of it's life and was pneumatically operated as was Box B about 70 yards off platform 4 between the platform 5 exit and the down carriage siding. the pneumatic signals and points worked up until 1981. the last box was C box in what is now the 159 depot this closed in 1974 and went soon after.

So interesting that they turned 50002 so it could continue with the broken screen then at the rear. I guess they ran back to Laverstock Jn to do that.

I am in this one twice. getting on 50045 Achilles black leather jacket white boots (it was the 90's) and again when D400 rolls in and I step into shot to photo the 33/1 and D400 I get a toot off the driver and I step back.. I also joined 50046 Ajax but I can't see me. but I can see a bloke I knew in the stripy shirt who joined me on that train.
