It’s time to store our homegrown garlic stash for the year, so we are cleaning it, weighing it, fake braiding it, and getting it stored. We are also attempting to make a garlic sauce condiment called Toum.

We finally got to see your baby's face! She's so calm, content - and beautiful! Now I'm wishing we'd get to see your other kids faces too! We see them walking around and working with you, which is so nice to see. They're all learning so much from all you do on a daily basis around gardening and growing food. Now I recall that the boys also learned how to weld or something like that too. Do you home school or do they go to public schools? I can see they're caring, observant, involved & intelligent, and good looking, like their parents, but don't know how old they are, or their names. I've been watching your family grow for a few years now and really like when you cook & explain as you go along. I like your down to earth & thoughtful personalities. Oh, almost forgot - when making the whipped up garlic and it seemed more soupy than you'd imagined, I thought if you'd just whip up a few more cloves of garlic, then add it into the mix, you'd be adding some .more substance & texture, if that's what you'd wanted. You could also whip up some chicpeas & add some of that purree for a nice sptead or dip, almost like a humas. I could see adding veggies too, like a sauteed cauliflower, some artichoke or maybe some kind of a lightly cooked green, maybe a raw or lightly sauteed kale. How nice to have earned all those heads of garlic, onions & more with a bit of good-for-you work by the whole family, outside. Are you planning a fall harvest? You are in a warm climate, so have a longer growing season than I do, but I forgot what state you're in. 🌻

Elephant garlic has a 3 year lifespan….the small cloves turn into big cloves, the big cloves will grow into a huge head, and then they split and produce the baby cloves again… keep planting. Also, it’s actually part of the leek family and when dried, makes a great garlic powder.

Also, after watching a video of yours on making garlic scape pesto, I for the first time made some of my own. I saw the scapes at a farmer's market and picked them up. For a fluffy toum it’s best to remove the germ from the clove and add lemon juice and oil gradually. If it breaks take a small amount in the processor add an egg white and start whipping and then gradually pour back the liquid garlic which has been removed. 😊

I removed the germ and did it exactly like this and my last batch failed just like Meg's. I've ALWAYS had perfect success with toum before this last time. One time in the past it broke for me and the egg white trick worked perfectly but this last time, even that didn't work. Any other ideas as to what could have been different? Also, I have tiny hole in my food processor so I can pour the oil in and it gradually and slowly drips the oil in and it didn't work for the first time ever. :(

Hi guys! I love watching your story! I love making taum and have a couple suggestions for you. It’s more like making mayo than hummus and sometimes I even use it instead of mayo. I find it best using a mason jar and an immersion blender. For that size, start with 1 cup of peeled garlic, amounts of salt, lemon juice, and oil can vary depending on the texture you want. I usually have the garlic, 1teaspoon salt, 1/4 cup lemon juice in the jar and zip it with the blender til smooth. Leave the blender at the bottom (not running) while you add 2 cups of neutral-tasting oil. Once in, start the blender and slowly, slowly raise it up the jar as it emulsifies underneath. That makes a thick, dip-like, mayo-like consistency that mostly fills the mason jar. For a thinner, sauce-like consistency, use up to 1/2 cup lemon juice and up to 3 cups oil (and up to 2tsps salt), but you’ll probably need a bigger container. Good luck!

Elisabeth makes my heart melt to a puddle❤ I’m going to be a first time grandma in November ,to a little boy who will be named Elias😊 Seeing her makes me go even more giddy. It’s weird to be a grandma already, I still don’t feel I’ve mastered the mom role yet.😂 But I guess we all learn as we go along. My daughter wants me to stay with her for the first month, at least, she said she’d prefer if I stayed for the first year😂😂 I’ve told them they can move back home and we can make the top floor of the house it’s own Appartement, but she don’t want that. I understand that too. She lives 150 yards from her work , where she is a manager. So she can easily run down there if needed , even when she’s off. Her boyfriend work is 400 yards, so it’s very central and all of the shops and conveniences is just out the door . They are nesting so bad now, the whole flat has gotten a makeover and the nursery is beatiful❤ Still, it’s really weird to see my baby with a baby belly. I feel she just became a teenager😢 I actually felt the baby kick for the first time on Friday, so it really is happening . it got me all teared up🥹

You know what is funny? I watched this yesterday afternoon and, in the morning, I had tried to make Toum sauce and had the same result the first time around. You have to add the oil by the spoonful I. The beginning until you get that thick consistency and then alternate between the lemon juice and the oil. I got it right the second time! The Hollars are my people

Peel and process the raw garlic, add a drop of olive oil then using a small cookie scoop and make little pucks. Freeze on a cookie sheet then put in bags or freezer boxes. So very handy when you’re cooking ‘fresh’ garlic all year!!

Lilah and I are over here oooing and awwing over Miss Elizabeth. She is so sweet. Our garlic had a bunch of uni-bulbs and spilt past some bulbs. So far I haven’t found any worms. I am just drying and freezing it all though.

Yes, plant those garlic corms!!! I'm on about my 12th year of elephant garlic, from just planting the corms. The elephant isn't as pungent as soft neck, but it is so good. My favorite is also the unicloves 😂

I have made perfect toum over and over and the last time I made a big batch it broke and turned out runny. I tried everything to save it, and couldn't and did nothing different. If you ever figure out what went wrong, let me know. Even the egg white trick didn't work for me. This was a great video and don't give up because I am beginning to think it has something to do with the garlic itself that it won't emulsify right. When it comes out right there is NOTHING better!! The baby is simply adorable. You have such a beautiful family and are so blessed!

I just made my toum. I used a tall cup, added Finley chopped fresh garlic then added the salt, lemon juice and oil on top. I used veggie oil. Stick the immersion blender at the bottom and slowly blend up until incorporated. I had to add more oil, then it got fluffy. It takes a few minutes. Hope it works for you next time. So yummy!

Thanks for yet another fab video. Sorry about the garlic, you still got quite a bit. Give buggy, gorgeous little angel, a kiss fro granma Ellie. Oh boy we have 49 celcius temps here in Greece. My whole garden is suffering, not producing anything. God bless you all.

Hi there! I’ve made Toum before and it’s delicious! The trick is to get the garlic, salt, lemon juice and the ice water processed in the food processor really well. And while the processor is still on, pour in your oil slowly to emulsify. Here’s a helpful trick….place your processor ‘tube/cylinder’ in the processor/lid and there is a small hole in the bottom of said ‘tube/cylinder’ which you can pour your oil into and it will drizzle a steady and slow stream of oil for you so you don’t have to stand there and hand pour a slow steady stream yourself! The tube will only hold maybe 1/2-1 cup of liquid at a time but that may vary depending on what appliance you have. Toum is a Lebanese Garlic Sauce if you want to search for more info on a how to but it’s delicious and was so stoked to see you guys trying it! Love your vlogs!❤
