Today was the day I put hay on my garlic. Because it is suppose to freeze tonight in my area, I picked all of the tomatoes and the last of the sizable green beans. I cleaned out the zucchini bed. I am going to put leaves and hay on that bed and leave the green bean plants in place and cover them with leaf mulch. Putting the beds to rest until next spring and feed the worms and microbes. I do still have peas, lettuce and beets for the greens under covers to extend their season. There are only two of us in our household, so our space is MUCH smaller than yours. God bless.

Ben, you and Meg are great. Love your videos. Been a sub. since the beginning. Love your knowledge of gardening. You have come a long ways. Turmeric and ginger need 2 to 3 years to grow. In your climate plant it like garlic, in the fall. Each little tuber should regrow. Make it a small perennial bed. Plant it and mulch. Just leave it there for however many years you wish. Harvest some if you wish. Nutritionally turmeric and ginger are one of the highest. They are even being studied now as a preventative of cancer. Turmeric was originally grown as a yellow die. Put a little in your rice or potato and guess what yellow rice or potato. It is fun. I use a lot of it because it is so good for you. Camera is OK but I can tell the difference. Good luck Good work God Bless the family Joe Scott Muddy Dog Ranch Manitoba Canada

You can grow turmeric and root ginger in pots as household plants - when you need it you can just root around the pot and pull of the amount you need. Also with chillie plants you can lift and plant them and trim them back but not to sticks but just reduce the size of the branches by 50% and again bring them indoors as houseplants or keep in your poly tunnel.
@jenniferrush82312 жыл бұрын
I highly recommend putting ur mulch to work with the raspberries and other berries. And if u dig up a few of the raspberry plant and plant them every five feet next year that will fill in. Also in the spring they will send out runners underground and poke up to 8ft away from the main plant. Those are soooo easy to replant and will fruit for u that same year.
@joanschauer26062 жыл бұрын
Great idea, Jennifer. I also keep thinking that you could end up with a berry farm or a fruit farm that will bring in a little extra income over the years. People love those home grown berries and are willing to drive a ways to buy them.

Put those buds back in the ground! It typically takes 2 years for a good turmeric harvest. The plant above the ground will die, but the roots will sprout again in the spring, and you'll have a great harvest the second year and every year after that if you don't harvest everything. Always leave some in the ground.

We grow two varieties of raspberries. They grow new canes in the season that the last years canes flower and fruit. After they fruit, those canes die. It is important to cut the dead canes at the ground. Unless of course it is such a huge patch you can’t possibly get them all. Keep them in a manageable row by digging or mowing spreading canes.

Love watching your journey. Your climate is so different from mine. Frost line here is generally 4 feet, so I mulch my garlic with about 6inches of straw (1 bale $15.49!) and count myself lucky I got it in without needing to bust through a couple inches of frozen soil. The winter that happened it still came up fine in the spring, but I only plant hardneck varieties. Anyway, I am learning lots from you. Thank you.

I agree Ben, July is "Jungle" month for us. The weeds always win! Nice size blueberry plants! Okay sized Tumeric for growing it the first time and putting it in the soil late in the season. You shouldn't feel embarrassed about your harvest. I'm so glad that Meg is feeling better. Good thing that not everyone caught "it" but sometimes the first people get it bad and then somehow there are less symptoms for others in the family when they get "it." Garlic is strange in that it wants to sprout right away and then it winters and really starts growing in the Spring. Too bad the ginger and horseradish went bye, bye. Nice spent hay mulching of the garlic. You put the garlic to bed for the winter. Nice video of your preparations for being ready for the winter guys. Thanks Hollar family.
