Nah, he's been around since well before his KZbin channel took off. He genuinely loves guest characters and I've disagreed with him from the jump. His love of guest characters isn't just an MK thing. He likes them in all fighting games. Meanwhile I can't stand them. I didn't mind them as much back in the day when you get like 1 random guest character. Now it's gotten to the point entire seasons of fighting game DLC is 50% guest characters. Dozens of popular characters actually from the game will be MIA but a random guest character like Ghostface...gets in. If you are at the point where you are putting Ghostface in a guest character, you are scraping the bottom of the barrel.

I never play guest characters, they usually don't fit. Terry is gonna be an exception because I like his gameplay and design in SNK games. Guest characters definitely exist for money...but that's why any other DLC character exists. I do agree that MK has been overly abundant in how many guest characters are in their games - but I wouldn't say there's any reason to hate them. Seeing characters we know clash and being able to play out dream fights is always a win. It generates a lot of community hype and brings a lot of positive eyes into the competitive scene, which is always welcome.

He's the best at that imo, with Lord Knight and Diaphone being up there too (but they only cover 2d games. Rooflemonger covers ALL fighting games) This is the first time I heard about/saw Rooflemonger do something I'd consider "bad." But MAN is it horrible. A bit of lore, Barbarian the game that was on commodore 64 and other systems from the 80s was the first game that had a fatality type move. You could press back attack and the Barbarian would spin chop and have a chance to decapitate the opponent and a goblin would come and kick the head off the screen. In the trailer for “Khaos Reigns”, the main focus of characters in the dlc seem to be the former and current Lin Kuei in the game which is why our MK characters are all Lin Kuei. However, judging by some of the areas in the story segments of the trailer, the characters will be traveling throughout the realms. This is also supported by the fact the colorful rocks in Havik’s chest are actually the kamidogu, keys to unlocking gateways in a realm between the main realms of MK. Earthrealm, Outworld, Netherrealm, Order Realm/Seido, and Chaos Realm. Not only does it make sense that we’re getting Lin Kuei characters due to the events that’ll start the dlc(Infiltrating the wedding to a traitor of the Lin Kuei) it’d make sense that we get Lin Kuei, but it’d make even more sense for us to get characters from the other realms like Hotaru from Order Realm or new characters from the different realms. Instead, we get 3 guest characters. The decisions for guests aren’t bad by any means but it’s too many guests that are probably gonna be O.P and probably won’t be played anymore as soon as they get nerfed.

I just left the theatre from seeing Deadpool 3. After seeing the blood carnage and fatalities/brutalities he pulled off effortlessly and hilariously in the beginning opening credits; honestly as a longtime MK Fan i have to say. I am flabbergasted that they overlooked DeadPool in favor of Conan and T1000. Deadpool would've fiT PERFECTLY in MK1. His ability to regenerate and fight through pain and survive fatalities would've made him the perfect choice. Conan and T1000 are a clear indication that MK1 dies with Kombat Pack 2. They should've just did MK characters and left it at that. Heihachi's return was more exciting and had a much more better reception from fans. This Kombat Pack was a huge L.

I have heard like a few one offs over the years of people requesting him, and when he was leaked I seen a fair amount of hype. But to me everyone was asking for doom guy and a small group of folks were vocal about getting t1000 ( mainly during mk11 to match up with terminator) I heard more clamoring for characters like ash Williams, xena, doom guy, penny wise, master chief, akuma, fulgore, Neo, John wick, even the guy from the Tom Clancy games lol. Sure you could say a lot of people wanted t1000 but most people wanted other characters, but are fine with the pick.

One thing that I haven't seen anyone talking about that I think is pretty important is the functionality of MK1 when all of this content drops. Quan Chi paralyzed the game for 2 months with desynchs, Khameleon almost broke Smoke and Reptile with infinite invisibility bugs, and the glitches that Homelander brought with him were so devastating that NRS had to push Ferra back an entire month just to iron out all his nonsense. And those were just INDIVIDUAL characters. Can you imagine the chaos (no pun intended) that may ensue when they drop not one but THREE new characters, new skins, Animalities, major balance updates, and a massive DLC story campaign ALL at the same time!?🥴 I suggest that you fine folks hold on to your $50 bucks or your £30 quid and wait to see how the game functions FIRST before purchasing anything. I remember I commented on Rooflemonger's video that I wished Mavado was a playable character and not just an assist and he said that Mavado didn't deserve a spot on the playable roster. I think the problem with this franchise is that it doesn't respect its own characters. Look at the mockery they make of Hsu Hao, how is anyone supposed to take the Red Dragon seriously after that? By destroying the character you destroy an entire faction, and he isn't the only one. There is no love for the 3D Era at all, only mockery. I have no doubt the people who despise the 3D Era weren't there to play those games, they only do so because they follow the example NRS themselves have set. NRS is too lazy to try to revitalize their old characters and must instead appeal to these guests, but by doing this they destroy their own franchise. MK had the best lore, where is that now? They don't try anything new, they just reuse the success of others.

5:47 hard disagree. As someone whose second favorite character in fiction is Terry, adding him to MK is a complete tonal mismatch and generally a horrible idea. Sure, Terry being in more games is something that I’d enjoy, but only when he fits. Terry does not fit in MK at all. Him being playable would mean he has fatalities, and I cannot imagine Terry brutally murdering people slowly and excessively is just the opposite of his character. If we get a fighting game guest for MK, make it someone who could be seen brutally murdering and being brutally murdered themselves. Not to mention I doubt SNK would sign off on this in the first place given how (as far as I can recall) MK isn’t sold in Japan. Also it just upsets me greatly to imagine him dying horribly Also I agree with the general thesis of this video, roofle going off like this is just a bad take. Clearly instead of the guests they should just add Drahmin instead, the best mk character

I think there’s no issues with guest characters, and whether we like it or not they do sell well. I honestly love seeing characters that you wouldn’t even think of being in MK and Kombat Pack 1 was great in my opinion. It’s all a balance. Also think there’s no issues with fans wanting more MK characters as DLC, but some of the fans go EXTREMELY OVERBOARD and it gets very annoying. Calling them idiots is very strong tho for the others who aren’t going overboard. I see both sides

I feel like 4 guest characters per game is perfect. Three that fit with the guest theme and 1 that gives us a glimpse at the next theme. 2 characters per pack, with the rest being MK characters. MKX did it perfectly.

I don't even mind some guest characters, but I want them to fit with the lore.... Here's what I mean... Ideally certain characters don't fit within the lore of MK, or all together in a fighting tournament. I'm a HUGE Friday the 13th fan, but Jason gets taken down (albeit temporarily, since he can't die), by teens, he's even went against a girl with minor telekinesis powers and he hardly held his own. Also seeing him jump and all that makes me gag, and I even liked the 2009 remake. Leather face is just a lesser Jason, except human, he doesn't fit either. Freddy fits (not even as much of a fan as I am for Jason), he rules a whole realm and has powers within the dream realm, and most everyone sleeps. Joker, if Batman killed he'd have been dead long ago (let alone martial artists that have super abilities), his antics only work on people with moral and Batman, MK has little morals when it comes to killing, Joker would be a joke. Spawn, a former skilled mercenary sent to Hell and given powers, to which he uses to rebel against Hell and use for his own reasons, he fits perfectly within MK type lore. Predator, an alien race that seeks out skilled warriors to better enhance their own species hunting skills, perfect fit, he was also the partially the inspiration for the cyborgs. Alien, doesn't fit, it's a wild beast that would have been killed off before it could do too much. Kratos, a mortal turned God because he fought Gods and Titans, completely fits. Terminator, as much as I don't like the inclusion, he fits with cyborgs and robots within MK, he was also kanos inspiration. Robocop, same reason as Terminator, also the 2nd half of the inspiration for the cyborgs. Rambo, meh, I don't like it, but I guess you could force him into special forces..

From what I remember MK11 had 7 MK and 5 Guests. They could lessen the Guest characters so for in MK1 it's 6 to 6 for Guest to MK ratio.

The mk community seems to hate their own history, like, doesn't anyone get happy when a character from the franchise gets a place in the roster for a new game? I remember the huge smile on my face when I saw that cody got into sfv, or when guy was added into sf4, shit like that is why I get invested in those franchises at all, but the mk fans only seem to care if scorpion and subzero are in the game. A fighting game's quality is also in its characters, but the fans give the characters the same treatment as nrs, none.

Yep, the guest character thing is not as black and white as "They sell more, therefore shut up, you're stupid if you don't like them". That's the short sighted mindset that dooms a lot of franchises. They see short term dollar signs because they will sell to the crowd that will buy a guest they like, play with it for a day or 2 and stop playing the game again, at the expense of pushing away the actual player base keeping the game alive, even more than they already are. Focusing on short term gain without thinking about the damaging ripple effect, is a recipe for disaster for a live service game and an ongoing series.

The pack is the same price as Aftermath with KP2 included in the expansion being 39.99 on the switch store at least. The 49.99 version adds KP1 to it for some reason. (I could be wrong but i have some hope). And on the switch store regardless of version you pre-order you get the bonus skins. I hope they have this for other consoles as well. Hopefully next pack will have at least Jade, Sonya, Jax, or Skarlet or a new MK rep. I don't mind guest characters but there should be a max of two not 3.

I wonder if I'm the only one who thinks that the story mode got the most attention from the developers while the rest was just and afterthought. I'm not saying it's necessarily inventive or super enjoyable, but it definitely had the most production value and it's sad to read about the low level developers being on crunch and suffering in order to push the game out and then we got what we got. They deserve more than this, we too deserve more than this.

Love your videos Mike, been watching them for a couple months now and only really had a couple disagreements. This is one of those times of disagreement though, and I've gotta ask: What makes people so angry with guest characters? Maybe it's because MK11's guest characters hold a special place in my heart due to my friend that introduced me to MK and fighting games as a whole was top 5 Jokers in NA, and maybe because that same friend got into Tekken because of Negan, but I've never really held too strong an opinion for or against guest characters (or even the redesigns of old favorites for that matter) simply because I play games cus they're cool and I think the guest characters all look cool. Like, I was kinda downtrodden when Noob wasn't base roster in MK1, and Heihachi wasn't base roster in T8, but the characters in the game are still cool and I think any character legacy or comfort excuses to be just that. I just think people should take videogame rosters less seriously, and just enjoy what's there, even if you won't be as good at first since your main's missing. You buy fighting games to learn and have fun, so I think a lot of people should do just that instead of complaining, you know?

When people grow up with a franchise, invest time and money into the franchise and grow to love characters it can be a little frustrating when characters that don't belong to said franchise take up slots. I understand the monetary side of things, but the core MK base are going to want MK characters because, as I mentioned, they are the core base. It's now gonna be another year of MK1 and they got 3 characters from a series with a rich legacy. Feels like the franchise loses itself in the pursuit of the 💰

@@espurrseyes42 That's a crossover game though, for guest characters specifically I give it to Soul Calibur 2's inclusion of Link, which was massive, probably the first instance of a guest character making such a large impact.
