Thank you for the video on Joan Jett. Growing up and learning to play in the South, we had no awareness about her struggles as an artist. At that time in the late 70s/early 80s we were into all kinds of music. I didn't know that much about Joan's music, but in 1980 the female singer in our band (we had female and male singers), her sister was supposedly good friends with Joan Jett, so I remember in 1980 playing 'I Love Rock n Roll' and 'Bad Reputation' because Heather (the singer) had those recordings. We had no idea about the disdain of Joan Jett! It is shocking, we loved those songs!!!! Long live Rock n Roll and Joan Jett!!!!

@@Bellasie1 Nice insight. I'm an old guy too, now, miss all the free-thinking fer sure - although we were a minority then, as now. Waaaay more 'squares' than 'hippies' and 'greasers'(lol).....huge generation gap - no parents or kids routinely would say "we're best friends! We do everything together!" My ex wife and I saw Aerosmith on their Pump tour in the then called Arco arena in Sacramento. Skid Row opened the show. I found out that later on during the tour Aerosmith kicked them off and replaced them with Joan Jett and the Blackhearts. Damn, wished it was before we saw them. Skid Row sucked.

Thing is without all that rejection we might not have gotten all this great music. Some people, and I think Joan Jett is in this category, just feed off it. Don't tell them no you can't, because they will just have to go out and prove you wrong. So, in a way, I want to thank all those who rejected her. We got a lot of great tunes out of it. lol

BTW I took a lot of crap from my friends back in the day for being a fan of the Runaways. I attended a Bowie concert in Denver not to see him but because the Runaways were opening. I faked my way into the front row center where we found two empty seats. Danced our asses off to the Runaways. The seat owners showed up for Bowie and we went to our nosebleed seats and talked about how great the Runaways were through the whole boring Bowie set.

Good Presentation. I collect Music most on CD some videos on DVD or Blue ray. The Runaways and Joan Jett and Blackhearts are as complete as I have been able to find copies. The same for Hank Williams, The MonaLisa Twins, Laura Branigan, Twisted Sister, Cheap Trick, The Go-Go's and The Seekers plus over a dozen more groups and single performers. Joan Jett and the Blackhearts is one of very few Performers I have seen live along with the Chicago symphony orchestra and chorus. My Age is 70.

I remember reading (Creem or Circus mag) that Joanie played pro women's softball in the brief time between the Runaways breakup and starting her solo career. She actually considered making pro sports her thing, due to the major label rejection the Blackhearts got. And about that - it's long been rumored the Runaways acrimonious split with their manager / svengali Kim Fowley was the principal reason no label wanted anything to do with any of the girls after the band's breakup. Lita had major difficulties getting a solo career up and running. Cherie struggled with substance abuse and even tried acting for a few years without much success. Jackie Fox and Vicky Blue both left the music industry altogether and went back to school. Sandy played in various local bar bands and ended up working in a veterinary hospital I think.
@DonMacGillivray
@DonMacGillivray 2 жыл бұрын
Hmmmm, not sure where you got any of that, Joan never played woman's pro ball nor considered pro sports as a career. She was a big fan of the Cleveland Indians however. The principal reason labels were resistant to signing Joan or Lita had nothing to do with Kim Fowley and more to do with The Runaways inability to chart in any major market beyond Japan. Cherie's first acting gig was as one the leads in a major studio motion picture (Foxes 1980) and worked in both film and TV before moving onto marriage (Robert Hays / Airplane) and motherhood...
@storybellz
@storybellz Жыл бұрын
@@DonMacGillivray Actually, the OP is correct- Joan had always fantasized about a pro sports career. In fact, in an early-1980 or so interview, Joan said that if the Blackhearts didn't work out, she'd like to try out for her fave baseball team, the Baltimore Orioles. She may have said that half-jokingly, but she has always wished she was a baseball player too, in addition to what she dowa. She even went to Fantasy Camp to learn from the pros in 1991 or so. Not sure where you got that she liked the Cleavland Indians- though she loves all baseball, so I'm sure she's fine with them, but they are not her fave team.

@@DonMacGillivray - I do wonder what article the OP is talking about mentioning Joan playing on a team in between bands though. OP might be mixing things up a little bit there. Seemed like a nice girl. About 10-15 years , one afternoon Joan Jett and Pat Benatar sat down next to me at a bar in a Casino, they were playing at that night. They were "incognito" , so to speak, dress in regular clothes, no stage make-up. Just a couple girls about 50. I talked to them for about 15 minutes, never said anything about who they were, and they never let on. But I had to so see some family, so I couldn't stay and talk. As I left I said ," Y'all have a good show tonight" LOL . I really wanted to stay and hang out, but I just couldn't. Nice girls

Unless Joan was wearing a Dolly Parton wig and a big ol' hat or something, she wasn't incognito, cause she does that all the time- wears regular clothes and no makeup. It's not unusual for her. Not sure about Pat though. I'm surprised they were both there together- are you sure it was them- like did you see Joan's tattoos? If yes, what did y'all talk about? Did either of them act weird after you said "Have a great show tonight!"?

In 1992 I was setting up for a show one afternoon at Spinnakers night Club in Panama City Beach Florida, right next to Club LeVela. A girl with wet looking, disheveled hair and looking really high came up to me and started trying to chat me up, but I wasn't really interested. She just didn't look all that good. Found out later it was Joan Jett. I have the dubious, unfortunate distinction of probably being the only dude to ever turn down a chance to get it on bang a gong with a Rock and roll legend. True story.

@@LogCap4Jobs - Well, you are one of the relatively few lucky guys who can say Joan came on to them! It's well-known in her circle that she prefers women, but like I always say, women are for relationships, but guys are for a night- at least if your name was Joan Jett back in the day haha. Do you remember what year that was? EDIT: I see now, you said 1992. Yeah, that makes sense- she was pretty open back then, whereas she's far more reserved these days, and exclusively into women, whereas back then, she'd go for a man for fun once in a while.

I was into Sabbath, Alice and Kiss so yeah I did like a fun show too. Anyway... Joan's attitude was NO reaction. I'm doing my thing. ALWAYS. She IS rocknroll.

Joan Jett has been my LOVE GODDESS and GUITAR GODDESS since I first heard Her and Lita Ford performing together in the group RUNAWAYS...I continued having the hardest of crushes on her during her Solo Career... Her Bad girl Image melted me like butter.... I had a major Crush on her, however I was IN LOVE with her Image and Performance as a Guitarist and Artist in the Rock and Roll Culture and Industry.....

I completely understand her struggle with "Women in Rock and Roll". It's something to acknowledge and appreciate. That being said, If she had SUCKED, she would have proved them Right. She did NOT. She was/is great. She is a Rockin' Rocker. "Female Rocker" implies she is something different. A different Standard. Good is good, period! The Added Struggle, is Note Worthy. But while it was happening, the Whole Idea was, "It shouldn't be happening! Who gets a Rats Ass if I sit or stand when I pee?" There is a Parable about, "If the door is blocked, use a Window." Joan took it to and completely different level. She just blusted through the entire wall! ..... Do you know what that is called?......... Rock and Roll! Again, Joan Jett is a Rocker, NO Gender Identifier needed! Her Best selling song rates 3rd on my list of Rock songs, "I love Rock and Roll" Second is: ACDC's Thunderstruck First on my list: is Joan Jett, "I hate myself for Loving you." (I think was the video. Besides being a great musicians, she is a Stunningly Beautiful Woman with Gorgeous Eyes!)

I prefer Chrissie too but that doesn’t mean I think you should throw shade at Joan. She has been influential.
