It is a great tragedy that no only is there very little film footage of Chick Webb (literally a few seconds) but also the audio recordings the band made are not of the best quality, either. Consequently Web’s legacy is mostly based on what other musicians say about him - which is always very complementary - but I wish we had more to see and hear for ourselves.

Everyone keeps saying they hear Art Blakey but if you dig around a bit, Art Blakey got a drumming lesson from Chick Webb himself once and he described it in full, pretty damn cool

In an interview, Benny Goodman said he played songs with lyrics at the tempo a singer would sing it. "Stompin' at the Savoy" was one of those tunes, although I like the faster tempo better.

Benny's band played excellently but they were too conservative. Webb let his band loose. Remember too, that Benny Goodman was not a racist. So it wasn't about showing up Chick. When Goodman had Billie Holiday singing with him he refused to let his band stay at the hotel that refused to room Billie. As for Gene Krupa, he was up against a seasoned pro of a drummer, and not just an average band drummer. Hell, Chick led his band. Goodman knew what he was going up against...he knew Chick's band wasn't second rate. Just great musical times.

All this talk about who is best is very shallow. Max Roach said 'forget who's "best". ' This discussion is about Webb and Goodman. Both were excellent - just different. I am not interested in dancing. Who cares? Benny had a superb saxophone section, led by Hymie Scherzer's alto. It was a light saxophone section, with no baritone. Listen to "One O' Clock Jump" on the 1955 Decca recording. Wonderful sound. Benny also had a fantastic trumpet section: Chris Griffin, Harry James and Ziggy Elman. My favorite swing era rhythm section was Basie's, with Freddie Green, Walter Page and Jo Jones. I never liked Krupa (as a player, not as a person), except with Benny's trio and quartet, though that lacked a bass.
