The Savoy Ballroom. My mother always told us about the times she was in there to dance and dance they did. For a young lady from SC, this was pure heaven. Who knows, Chick and Ella may still be packing the Savoy and momma may still be dancing with joy.

A recording from the latter half of 1939 or early 1940, after Chick had died. Ella took over the band and led it, billing was Ella FitzGerald with the Chick Webb Orchestra. Evidence? She doesn't mention his name among those of other musicians which would never have happened were Chick there, and the announcer announces it as Ella FitzGerald and the Chick Webb Orchestra. She kept the band together through most of the war, & had a number of hits including A Tisket a Tasket, 5 O'Clock Whistle

I agree. The drummer does not sound like Webb, must be Bill Beason.

It really was Chick who you might say discovered Ella, or at least gave her her first opportunities. I love that fact the great bandleaders, like Webb, can spot talent so early and showcase it. Webb's been called the grandfather of many drummers and rightly so. So many later players, who's names are more recognized (Buddy Rich, Louis Bellson for example) credit Webb as there major influencer. Driving, just Driving on the drums. Rest in Peace Chick Webb.

This is Chick Webb' orchestra lead by Ella Fitzgerald but this is not Chick on drums but Bill Beason ! Chick Webb dead on june 16, 1939 ! This has been recorded after his death...but this is yet a good version of St Louis blues even if Bill Beason wasn't as great as Chick was...

@@billybarty2948 He is right though. If Chick was alive the announcer at the end would have mentioned him but he didn't. Also it's a fact that Ella fronted the band after Chick's death so everybody would have a job. Learn to be nice. Music was good until disco came along. Then record companies realized that they just needed a beat and some crap on top of it and people would buy it. that was the beginning of the end. That's where we are today, poor quality, lacks imagination, churned out in mass production. Sadly, not many young people realize what junk they are listening to. Luckily, my 4 kids have raided my CD collection and know what good music is. My 17 year old daughter wants me to will her my collection when I die.
