Fun fact: Paul Reiser, who played Burke, took his mother to the premiere, and even she cheered when his character got killed. The Alien series are the only horror films I've ever had nightmares about. I used to have dreams of running down endless corridors, pursued by an Alien, and only just managing to close doors in front of it, but it still smashed through them eventually. After God knows how many doors, I just couldn't run any more, so I slumped again the wall, trying to get my breath. Then I noticed that there was no pounding from the other side of the last door, so I looked through the window, to see the Alien leaning against the wall, trying to get it's breath back as well...

Ripley, Vasquez, Sarah Connor, Princess Leia, these are the female action heroes that all since have been compared to. Sadly, many in the last twenty years have fallen far short of those standards. Rita Vrataski in Edge of Tomorrow, Alita in Alita Battle Angel, Gamora, or Pepper Potts in any of the Marvel movies, Maggie Fitzgerald from Milion Dollar baby, all of these roles were great and worthy of being right there next to the best. But, they are the few, and the many are awful.

One of the greatest sequels ever made, along with Terminator 2, also by James Cameron. It also has one of the greatest put-downs in movie history: "Hey, Vasquez, have you ever been mistaken for a man?" "No. Have you?" OUCH! And the scene with Ripley in the powerloader fighting the alien queen is right up there with Captain America wielding Thor's hammer: "Get away from her, you bitch!" The theater went NUTS! About how this movie got made, the story goes that James Cameron was at 20th Century Fox pitching some other story idea of his, but the studio rejected it. While he was leaving, he and the receptionist had a short conversation about various movies and just as he was heading out the door she said something like, "Maybe you could do a sequel to 'Alien'!" which stopped him dead in his tracks because he immediately realized the potential of such an idea.

Ripley was ready to leave without torching the eggs, until one opened. The truce was broken, so she showed no mercy. F#@k around and find out.

Do NOT, under any circumstances, watch any of the other movies after this one. The first two are absolute masterpieces. The rest are not just utter garbage, they actually deliberately ruin the first two.

This one was not a masterpiece.

@@ST19859 I doubt it. More like fairly even. Alien is rated slightly higher on imdb. Aliens slightly higher on Rotten Tomatoes. Many fans are ignorant or overlook the beyond stupid idea that Ripley disposes of the Alien in the first movie & then with astronomically low odds, the aliens are not heard or seen from again until 57 years later... which happens to coincide exacttly within a few days after Ripley wakes from her long sleep. That's poor & lazy writing of script = not a masterpiece. Also the Aliens weren't scary because they clearly lacked the intelligence of the one shown in Alien.

@@_MjG_Not as stupid an idea as you think it was. _Alien: Isolation_ reveals that 15 years after the _Nostromo,_ another ship, the _Anesidora,_ detected the same beacon and landed on the moon to investigate and salvage anything of value. The crew discovered the derelict and some equipment left behind by Nostromo. While exploring the derelict, the captain of the Anesidora _disabled_ the distress beacon to prevent any other salvage vessels from discovering the ship (wanting to keep anything valuable for himself) and the captain's wife ended up with a facehugger. Then they flew to _Sevastopol Station,_ hoping to find medical help for the captain's wife (and setting in motion a second xenomorph infestation.) The alien ship was shielded from the colony's ground scanners by the Ilium mountain range, while the moon's thick, debris-laden atmosphere shrouded the ship both from the naked eye and satellite scanning. That's why it wasn't discovered for 42 years after the _Anesidora_ incident, when Burke found the data in Ripley's flight recorder, then _deliberately_ deleted the original data, and sent colonists to go investigate, triggering the third Alien outbreak. Alternate non-video game interpretation: Maybe the warning beacon just failed from old age. Nothing lasts forever. And since the weather prevented satellite scans, and the minerals in the mountain range blocked ground scanners, the colonists never knew about the ship until Burke sent them there. In regards to whether or not the video games like _Alien: Isolation_ are canon, it honestly depends on what _you_ consider canon, in a manner of speaking. The video game has been considered tentatively canon. It's never been referenced in the movies, because of course it didn't exist when the movies came out, so if you go solely by those, then no, it's not canon. Remember, however, that FOX gave the game developers unrestricted access to all the available material, including a lot of stuff that ended up on the cutting room floor, and the developers expressly did not want to retcon anything. However, in 2014, three novels were published prior to the October release of Alien: Isolation. These books were _Alien: Out of the Shadows, Alien: Sea of Sorrows,_ and _Alien: River of Pain._ These books were _explicitly_ created to tie in with the film-only canon, but Out of the Shadows (set between the original Alien and Aliens) has a brief passage in which _both_ Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) _and_ her daughter (the protagonist of the then-unreleased game) are referenced to having foiled Weyland-Yutani's attempts at acquiring the Xenomorph. By this passage alone and by the intent of those three novels to tie in with the Alien movie series, it can be suggested that those three novels plus the movies (excluding AVP/AVPR) plus the game are meant to represent an "official" canon.

There is an Alien book that explains why she was lost in space for 57 years.

Great movie, the first two are very good. The last two I'll leave for others to comment on. Newt in the second one took the place of Jonesy the cat from the first one, an innocent that Ripley had to save.

This movie is an allegory. A force of heavily armed and highly trained professional soldiers travel to a faraway land, but when they get there, they are defeated miserably, not for lack of bravery or skill, but simply because of unfamiliarity with the terrain and the type of enemy they were facing. Does that remind you of anything from America's history that was still fresh on people's mind when this movie was made?
