Even the so-called "audiophiles" couldn't tell lamp wire from the fancy Monster speaker cable. But the Monster cable had very nice plastic covering.

Great video! I only have the $70 Happrun projector (from your recommendation) so spending money on the expensive paints would not make sense for me, but this video still helped me. I'm projecting onto a regular white wall, and the section where you mentioned reflected light from adjacent walls washing out the picture made me realize that I can probably improve my picture by finding some cheap way to cover my adjacent white walls with something black
@rodmunch692 ай бұрын
Great video! Question though - is it worth painting or just buying an inexpensive gray screen? Is there anything special about the paint - or is it just the color? I had a projector since 2005, and build and painted a screen at the time with some fancy paint, and later replaced it with just a cheap white screen that was larger - and I really didn't notice much of a difference. The cheap screen didn't reflect as much light, for sure, but also the black levels were slightly better (although the projectors then were pretty dim so black levels were less of an issue). Anyways, if you happen to see this and have any thoughts on that, I'd love to hear them.
@TheHookUp2 ай бұрын
I think a decent screen ($300-500 silver ticket) would accomplish something similar. Cheaper screens tend to be pretty garbage unless you're just looking for 1.1gain white.

@TheHookUp2 ай бұрын
True, if you're not at all concerned with black levels and contrast the Behr is a great option. As far as the 85" TV, you'd be surprised how much larger a 120" screen is than 85", let alone 150".

A couple of questions. I have the Nebula Mars 3, which was not tested and have a room that will have light at times from 4 windows. I'm assuming you won't use every screen when reviewing projectors going forward (or will you...?). is there a good rule of thumb on how to guess which of these is best for a given projector? Second, does this work as well on the wall as on the screen? Does the finish make much difference? Also, I was looking at the Paint on screen s1 ultimate on amazon they claim it's for areas with high ambient light, which I thought was interesting given your review showing how great it was with low light situations. Also, amazon has a paint rated better than the S1 ultra that could be worth a review (Digital image ultra white HD projector screen paint)

Hey, Rob. Here's a question I've always wondered about, but never heard addressed. Is a painted surface in any way an improvement over a store bought screen that warrants the time and money for the paint. And if it is, would the best thing be to paint the screen rather than trying to paint sheet rock or plywood? I watched this video last night very tired, so while I know you picked the best picture of the different paints, I'm not sure if you did mention whether they were better than just a standard store bought screen.
@TheHookUp2 ай бұрын
No, I can't think of any improvement of a painted surface over a fixed frame screen other than price. The problem with painting sheet rock or plywood is that you're limited by the 4ft height of sheet goods.

@TheHookUp2 ай бұрын
These would definitely not perform like a CLR lenticular screen does, but there are other types of ALR that would be theoretically possible in paints using reflective solids. Using crystalline solids that reflect light on the same axis the light is received is how most long throw ALR screens work (like the Vividstorm Obsidian Long Throw ALR for instance). The issue with using reflective solids is that it creates issues with hotspotting, "sparkling", and more recently we're learning that it greatly exacerbates laser speckle.

Many of these projectors are high lumens (3000+ lumens) and can hit 108nits required for HDR projection with the low gain screen.. Doing so improves low light performance and might be compatible with a JVC which peaks at 2300 lumens.
@TheHookUp2 ай бұрын
100nits is the threshold for SDR, not HDR.
@vjay42972 ай бұрын
I got the Dolby HDR target (108nits) information from "Dolby Vision Cinema Targets & Trims - FAQs". I was surprised too. This could be the reason the Xgimi projector with sub 3000 lumen got Dolby Vision certification. I've gone through quite a few white papers. SMPTE and ISO specify 48+/-10.2 nits for cinema and 48 +/-3.5 for review rooms for SDR. For cinemas, HDR is specified at 299.6 nits with min black level of 0.005 nits. (Ref. High dynamic range D-cinema addendum, v1.1, DCI, March 2023) Projection has tolerance of +/- 18 &30 for review room and cinema respectively. Cheers

@TheHookUp2 ай бұрын
Pretty favorably. I think if you have a non-textured wall then projector screen paint is a 100% viable alternative to a fixed frame screen for standard throw projectors. There aren't many screens out there with gain lower than 0.4, so if you want one of the ones like E-H paint is pretty much your only option.

@the hookup. The black widow scren paint did not give me those results. And when i complained he threatened to sue me. And im not the only one. Did he know who he was sending the paint to? This gentleman has ripped off alot of people. With his claims. Have you tried complaining about the paint yo see how the purchase situation is with all these products? As for the serius c did you follow the instructions for application as technically iys not a paint?. Yhe projectors i ised for a black series pain were the optima cinemax p2. The optoma gt1080 and the ud51a by optoma and i got vastly squed images colour was way off. And it claims to be ALR. these things you didnt describe in your demonstration. Plus its his gunmetal grey trt one of his black paints. And do a test for white screens and black screens as the results will be different. I was just wondering if you followed the application instructions of the sirius c, and intoo of that how long were the paints stood for? These are all relevent and could scew the results somewhat i also notice the conteol sample you used was a white acreen and not a dark screen. Which could be one vairible. What matters is the viewing eesult like a pc could have the gighest speca but real world performance could vary vastly.

Can you give me more context on him threatening to sue? Did you email saying "I can't get the results I was expecting" and then he said "I'll sue you?". I really don't have any desire to enter the drama of the youtuber screen paint world, but as an outsider looking in it seems like all parties involved are being extremely petty and litigious. They were ordered using my personal email without any other contact, just as any consumer would buy them. I'm not surprised that your P2 performed poorly, as I mentioned, I really wouldn't recommend paint for a UST. The GT1080 and ud51a should have faired better. I did specifically describe ALR and mention that paints cannot be true ALR since they have no lensing effect.

There is so much wrong with this review i think it should be removed! Prices recalculated to gallon prices are questionable. I dont think you bought that black series edition paint for 72 dollars a quart! If you used only 2 92inch screens for this test you painted screen paint over screen paint and everybody knows the thickness of the coating on the origional screen will affect the reflection capabilities of the screen paint. So if you did paint screen paint over screen paint your affecting how the product works. Not fair in my view. Also partay's paint is not recommended for ust projectors so doing a demo on that is also not fair in my view. And yes Partay was right in his comment : why didn't you buy the black paint from black series edition? That his prime and most important product, heck he doesn't even sell Gunmetal paint anymore! And then put the lightest black series product against the darkest Partay product is really questionable! Not showing the painting of the paints is a real red flag for me too. It looks like you wanted to do this review but actually know nothing about screen paints or even read the specifications of the paints. For example : you can't put 4 coats of a paint on a screen if the seller says : 1 coat application. If it doesn't cover in 1 coat then the seller is questionable and lying about his product. Lastly i hope you got permission from Partay to do this review, because his product can only be reviewed with his permission. You agreed to those terms and conditions when you bought the paint. For personal use only! KZbin review without permission not allowed! So if you did not get permission from Partay to do this review your liable for a lawsuit. So i guess you should remove this video if you didn't get permission from Partay to do this, because there could be a lawsuit comming. You agreed to the terms and conditions when you bought his paint. Lastly your talking like you can calibrate out color in-accuracy? That's crazy talk to me. Jsut remove this review it's worthless and gives a wrong impressions of the "companies" selling these paints. It also is a kick in the face of all the people that got scammed by black series edition and were unhappy with his product! You promoting this stuff as being the best for ambient light environments is really harmfull to the projector community and will lead to more unsatisfied black series edition customers. So I'm asking you nicely : remove this video!

I used the front and back of two 92" screens, the material is identical PVC on the front and back. No paints were painted over. If a paint specified a method for painting (priming, thin coats, 3/8" nap microfiber rollers, etc) then that was followed. Calibrating out white balance errors is extremely common, and even relatively inexpensive projectors have 11 point white balance now, though I would imagine the error could even be corrected with a standard 2 point gain and offset correction.

@@TheHookUpyou were misleading with Partay’s product and used several projectors that should not qualify on it… from the recommend lumens range or type of projector… and some paints you gave little to know extra input on… I can tell you spent little to no time with each of these products, you showed little variety in demonstration videos… it was a Shabby job brother… whoever got you to do this had an agenda OR you were not on your game when doing research period. Either way it shows. Yes calibration techniques can improve certain aspects but again I ask… how can something be more accurate in two areas you noted and cheaper ( which should be a major part on the conversation when talking about DIY anything ) but be worse? Doesn’t make sense dude hands down. And you didn’t point out any of the discrepancies during the video either that conflicted with some of these specs.. so either you didn’t read them OR you intentionally misled your viewers. You could have done a whole series going in depth with each product showing a wide range of content, angles, and still calibrated for each score individually…. But you rushed… and it shows. Shame on you, not just for partay but for the others as well.
