Great video as always. A word of caution if you attach a dimmer to a standard outlet: Many years ago, when video cameras were high-end tech and cost 1/4 of a typical car, I plugged a high-end video camera into an outlet in a theatre. Tested it and all worked fine. Then started recording the performance. A little way in the Lighting guy in the AV control room pulled down all the dimmers and the AC outlet I was connected to was one of them. It completely fried the power supply unit _and_ the power circuit in the camera. Be very careful what you connect downstream of a dimmer.

Haven't been keeping up with all the new Shelly products. Thank you for the update, now I need to go out and buy some more devices.
@johncrunk80385 жыл бұрын
I have a handful of Shellies and they are very reliable. The only gripe I have ( common to most of these types of devices ) is the screw terminals. When connecting 14 AWG solid wires, I have had a tough time squeezing the thing back into the box without dislodging wires. I finally solved that by using stranded wire on the Shelly and using Wago connectors ( I guess you could use wire nuts. Ugh! ) to attach the solid wires. It takes up more space, but really makes it more reliable. This also makes it easier to remove or replace the Shelly since you don't need a screwdriver. I gave up on the Sonoff devices because of the skimpy PC traces that overheated and destroyed the device. I fixed a couple by soldering wires to the back of the PCB, but that is a lot of work to solve a simple problem. It is interesting that the eMylo devices ship with the Wago connectors.
@TheHookUp5 жыл бұрын
I think the key to using solid core wire is planning out how it will be bent before attaching it to the shelly. I get all my wires stripped, then hold them in one hand and stuff them back in the box to where the shelly will eventually live. This helps get them bent/folded in the right place, then pull them back out and attach the shelly.
@johncrunk80385 жыл бұрын
@@TheHookUp That's a good solution too. I'm still not thrilled with the screw connectors. I still have a few boxes without the Wagos and they seem to work OK once they are "stuffed".

I have switches that control outlets, but have a ceiling fan+light un-switched. Seems I could pair these in the ceiling with a smart switch to wirelessly control the light without having to run a new wire to the light in the fan and leave the outlets un-switched.

Didn't think I'd pull it off, but I got my lights mounted and running and thanks to DrZzs running off WLED for now. I've been looking at the Shellys since your first video, but most of my switches are 3-Way, so I have to figure out the wiring before I jump in. So, when I press the button, it signals the alarm siren to start, and then it remains on until I press the button again. This is the way it should work, so I have no issues with that. Were the problem arises is that after the 0.5 second delay the light on the shelly or Alexa or Google turns OFF even if the siren is still blaring. If I press the button again it send the pulse and stops. In other words this is not a switch with an on/off state, but a buzzer that you press once to turn on and once to turn off. How do I set up the Shelly 1 to send the 0.5 second pulse and indicate it is ON until it is pressed again? I would really appreciate your help guys. TIA Alex 0 Co

Love your videos, . I did today an installation of multiple shelly dimmers. I have an interesting scenario. In my dining room I have 14 lights of 17w each exceeding the 220w maximum of the dimmer. So I split the load on 2 dimmers (still fits in the box) with 4 push buttons, on a single gang decora. I wonder how I can have both dimmers synch the brightness (and on/off) . So they work as a single unit... In tesmota we could have done rules, but unfortunately the shelly dimmer cannot use tesmota as of now.. Can probably achieve it with node red flows, but its getting complicated..

Hi, Very interesting videos! I am new to the this smart revolution and trying to catch up :-) Which Shelly device can I use to control a towel warmer? I need an ‘auto off’ function for my warmer. Thanks

do you have a tutorial for shelley dimmer with no neutral through the switch?

Can anyone help with following requirement? I have two lights - (a) 23w led light and (b) 10w led. The 23w led(sonoff slampher) has mains supply that means when power fails there is no light from this, whereas 10w led(sonoff mini) has mains/inverter supply, so i want the 10w lights to turn on automatically only during mains power failure and turn off automatically when mains power comes back.

I'm thinking about putting a 2.5 in the first box of my 3way lighting. There's no other way I can think of to keep a device powered w/o rewiring the circuit. I have the type 3 wiring from DrZzs video. 2 relays can simulate a SPDT (3-way) switch and power monitoring can sense a downstream switch state. HA automation can handle the footwork of displaying on/off status vs power threshold. Dumb switch just toggles the Shelly relays' state.

Great Video as always. I recently installed my first shelly behind a switch plate after I got tired of my wife resetting my smart lights by using the physical switches. Could you go into a bit more detail about the detached switch mode? What does the actual wiring look like? Could you provide a schematic?

The Wiring in detached Mode is the Same as in "normal" mode. The Difference is that the relay of the shelly does Not react directly to the Switch. Instead the Shelly sends the Switch State as mqtt Message with topic shellies/shellyxyz/Input/0 and Payload 1 or 0 . Your automation now can react on this, for example by Starting a script that Turns on/off the relay with delay and/or further actions based on the State of the Shelly Switch Input. I use a Shelly 1pm to Control a circulation Pump of my Heather per mqtt. The detached Switch Input on the other hand is connected to the AC Burner Output of the Heather and so tells this State to Homeassistant. The shelly1pm by the way Shows the Power consumption of the pump,...

@@Take5Instead4 Since you seem to know a bit about detached mode, I was wondering if the Shelly falls back to normal switch mode if it loses connection to wifi? I want to run detached switch mode but worried about losing control of lights if my wifi goes out. I would hate to not be able to turn on and off my lights because my wifi is down for whatever reason.

@@RippedWarrior if WiFi Connection is lost, the output can not be changed with the Hardware-switch input anymore, since the Shelly remembers the Detached-Mode even after reboot/power loss. The output state after reboot/power_on can be configured too, of course.

Excellent video Rob. Nice to see the complete Shelly lineup. I like to see the quality and the UL approved devices. What are you running your home assistant on? My SD card on my RPi blew up and I need to restart. Heading to FB to join yours and Shellys groups. Thanks
