Great video, thank you for doing it. It would have been nice to see you catch a fish on the shorter, less traditional deep cranking technique though. Feels like a very niche technique that may make sense at a very pressured lake like Biwa but not sure it makes my list as a weekend warrior. Sometimes these videos feel like a whole sales pitch to get us to buy more stuff (I guess that's the whole point) and it's not clear that it will actually catch us more fish.

This breaks conventional ideas, but using straight braid (I prefer 20# Daiwa Samurai) will actually get the bait deeper than fluoro even though it doesn’t float. Because it has a thinner diameter creating less resistance. Also when using fluoro you’d actually don’t get the full effect of fluoro sinking because the line is constantly being reeled. Which means the line doesn’t have the time to sink and create that downward belly between the bait and reel. The only to get that is to let the bait sit for a minute or so before reeling in, but at around the first third or so of reeling the bait in, that belly part has been reeled up and is no longer helping depth. Another thing, unless the water really clear the fish aren’t able to see the line. Most determine visibility by dropping a bait in the water and seeing how deep it goes before it disappears. That actually isn’t visibility per se, it is light penetration. So, for example, if from the surface to the bait disappearing is 3’, that doesn’t mean that at 20’ deep there is 3’ of visibility. If the light penetration is as deep as you’re fishing the line will then be visible, but if it isn’t the line is invisible. Also braid will give the bait more freedom of movement allowing it to hunt and have more of an exaggerated action. However, to make up for the lack of stretch in the line stouter trebles and split rings need to be used. As well as, a more parabolic rod. I personally use the Orochi Launcher and love them. If you’re not bringing it through much cover, use the drag a little more than normal to help. The other benefit is that you don’t have to change your line after a long day of deep cranking. Fluoro has stretch and after a long day of cranking, the line has been worn out from the resistance of the bait. Braid will last a year a more. I’m not a huge braid guy for most stuff but the few things I use them for is for reasons like this. Also put a big ass handle on your cranking reel, like a 110-130mm handle. Just make sure the reel has a strong enough gear to support the braid and torque of the handle. I like the zillion hd 7:1 with a 130mm livre handle. The bigger handle has more torque and allows me to use a high speed reel and it still be easy to reel all day.

So the question I have as a co angler would be, what’s stopping me from attempting to do this with the Megabass deep divers? Is it just due to how the bait is made? What is your thought process behind throwing it on 18# line? What ratio are you throwing this on?

Heavier line in fine because I’m not trying to get max depth out of it, so I’d rather have the strength. You could certainly try this with Megabass cranks as well. For the shallow stuff I like a bait that’s super buoyant and dives almost vertical so it’s easy to manipulate around cover.
