If you put your thumb over the hole while you crank it until you feel air push out then put the screwdriver in it you know you're at tdc on the compression stroke and you can't be 180 out

8:55 This could have been TDP or the top of the compression stroke because the piston comes up two times in each cylinder for every 1 RPM, a tip i use is to plug the spark plug hole with your finger and if you feel compression, that's how you know you'll be at TDC when the piston comes all the way up because if it was coming up on the exhaust stroke they wouldn't be any compression.

To make sure it’s at tdc on the compression stroke, put piston one at the tdc as u did. Then open the oil cap and make sure the exhaust cam lobe on cylinder one is pointing outward toward the drivers side. This makes sure the valves r closed and ur not 180 degrees off.

I go with the compression feely thing, or if youre working on something without spark plugs or without overhead cams, you can check which rockers are on valve overlap. Cylinders 1 and 4, 2 and 3 are moving pairs. Firing order in a 4 cyl is 1-3-4-2. To check for cylinder 1 TDC on compression, rotate the engine until both valves on cyl 1 are closed and cylinder 4 has both valves slightly open. Wiggle it back and forth and try and get both cyl 4 rockers open an even amount. boom. If you were doing a valve set you would the move onto cyl 3 and rotate until cyl 2 is in overlap, etc.

What's crazy enough is BoostedBoiz's tore into the SR20 in their S14 and it had spun a bearing the exact same way with the two halves basically fused together, only that it locked that SR up. He said he had never seen it happen like that before either. Hope it's not a new trend starting? Lol

my SR i had for a bit had the bearing spun the same way. it usually happens because the lack of oil causes friction and lets one of the bearings grab traction, which in turn sends it to the other side. Also his shit was probably already worn from high mileage so it was only a matter of time.
