So much of what Elisabeth goes through could have been mitigated by a single supportive, loving voice. She has none. The scene of her lying in the shower, pleading with her brain/mind to stop being so cruel to her body… that really hits home. It makes sense that Sue has no love for Elisabeth because Elisabeth has no love for herself. In that way, she and Sue are absolutely “one”
@82Jaster2 ай бұрын
It really seems inevitable for anyone that takes The Substance. You've got to have some degree of self hate to want to take it. Elisabeth had made her living based on her body and appearance. She began to hate that body and herself simply because she was doing something that everyone does, which is age. Having Sue would only make that worse because she's a constant reminder to Elisabeth of why she already hates herself.
@Lii1702 ай бұрын
@@82Jaster She didn't hate herself because of age. She was perfectly fine until she heard that jerk, and he and others started bringing her down for it. All the while he and the other dudes aren't exactly Ken. And notice that most people who makes her feel like crap, except her other self, are men.
@82Jaster2 ай бұрын
@@Lii170 She didn't have a problem with her age or her looks until she heard Harvey. But then she realized that both were detrimental to what she's seemingly been for the majority of her life. That's when she began to hate those aspects and it made her want to use The Substance since it creates the ultimate version of yourself. And in her case it meant a version that was decades younger. She got a new lease on life with Sue, and the only thing she could think to do is go right back to the very people who she knew only valued her for her looks and age.

This movie deserves best sound design! So good!!! Personally, I think sue and elisabeth are the same person and same conciousness. She just had so much self hatred that she dissociated herself from the begining by giving sue a different name and going right back to the same job that cast her out. The scene where demi moore keeps readjusting her makeup causing a break down hits me on a super deep level, this whole movie did. Thank you guys for giving us this! Especially today love ya!🖤🖤 Edit: I'm here for the monstro elisasue praise! She's a queen
@hander9292 ай бұрын
Absolutely. The self hatred is real in her. And how stuck she was in the same by going back to host the show. How Sue kept getting more disgusted with Elisabeth and hated how she "just layed in front of the TV eating". And then Elisabeth on her end not finding anything to fill her days, no purpose other than waiting those 7 days to switch again

Yoooooo, just found you guys! Your channel is now my substance 😂 I don’t know why it took so long to come by your channel, but here I am! Going to dig through your channel like the old me clawing out of my body 🫣 👏🏻 Edit: I have to say this reminded me of Requiem for a Dream. Anyone else feel that 😅 Cheers!

Elisabeth's inner monster was her self-loathing. We see her lose the battle with it when she breaks down in the bathroom before her date and we see it manifested at the end in ElisaSue. Elisabeth was warped by society and herself. She was a natural beauty - young or old. But she believed in society's lie that that was the only good thing about her. This made her vain as a young woman and she could not grow old peacefully. She hated her aging self before she took the Substance and alienated herself from herself before Sue was ever 'born'. Since Sue is essentially just Elisabeth but back in her younger body the hatred for aging and 'ugliness' especially within herself comes out in her (Sue's) brutal murder of her originator/Matrix. Society should not shame aging or ugliness in anyone. Life is a short experience - scarring, weathering, and not easy. We do not escape it without being changed. The moments we live most for in Life give us smile lines and laugh lines. The best serenity we find is not looking at our reflection but into a loved one's eyes who loves us in turn. And they see the real us. The flesh is only temporary. We are more than that. Young people who are beautiful grow into Elisabeths if they are not careful. If you make your looks and the status you glean from them your only source of self-worth then Life and aging will kill you before you are dead. Gen Z (women and some men too) are getting more cosmetic and plastic surgeries than ever before. They should watch this movie because it is (in addition to being a critique on Hollywood) a cautionary tale.
