The chef asked her if she was going to be a giver or a taker. By asking him to make her a cheeseburger, she became a giver because she’s “giving” him an experience he actually enjoys. That’s why he let her go I think.

Yeah he got to cook something he personally loved making, and had a customer who had a genuine reaction of pleasure in her burger. Also she only took one bite but had strong reaction to it just like Julian himself asked at the beginning with his don't eat savour it line.

she convinced him that she was neither a giver nor a taker but just a customer. so someone that is not part of his work of art; his ''menu'', someone he did not service for many many years. it transported him back to his old happy times when a customer could be satisfied with getting exactly what he/she ordered/wanted, no surprises, no revelations, no obession or futile strive for perfection. no precicely portioned meals; when the customer says she is full and wants the rest to take away its his duty as the host (not as a giver) to comply.

I also think that, with that move, she gave chef Slowik a "way out", so to speak. An opportunity to let her live, when she showed him she is a giver, after him stressing all night that she would have to die alongside the others, as a collateral damage (sort of ruining his Menu). She helped him, and he helped her. It's a demonstration of truth and release.

When Margot was in chef's cabin she noticed that he was happiest in the photo of him working at the burger joint so she asked him to make a burger. When he saw her not "eating" but savoring and enjoying her food, like he asked everyone to at the beginning of the night, it brought back a little bit of the joy he felt long ago so he let her live.

Said this on other videos but I like that The Chef didnt look down on Erin's career he saw her for another worker in the people driven service industry. Asking her if she liked the work and it was refreshing to hear her say she, much like him, used to, SO often sexwork is portrayed as "its all i got to offer " or its a part of a character flaws but in knowing what a customer likes and wants shes able to get herself out of this horrible situation. Now lets hope that boat just stalled for the view and she can get home cuz that burger isnt gonna hold anyone for long

Don't sugarcoat "sex work" though. In 99% of the world it's not exactly "voluntary", it's sex trafficking of young women. Maybe .1% of "sex work" is the high-paid, luxury kind. And at the end of the movie, Chef concludes she's not one of them, she's an eater.

@@zombiesingularity Anyone who does a Onlyfans, JustforFans and any other in that category is doing sexwork so i think that percentage might ever so slightly be pulled out of thin air but of course there is exploitative practices going all over the world which is horrendous but me complimenting the movies handling of Erin and her profession doesn't delegitimize the awful things that happens in forced labor in that field its just pointing out that here it was treated with respect. Where in other horror films Erin wouldnt have been a final girl but more an opening kill and one we would be told wasnt a good person merely because of her career path
@zombiesingularity
@zombiesingularity Жыл бұрын
@@kacektv9405 There are cases in the news recently of pimps forcing women to run webcam shows and taking most of their profits. There was another story of a top onlyfans girl's abusive boyfriend forcing her to stream so they can keep up their fancy lifestyle. Stuff like that makes me think its worse than we realize, not better.
@supercalime
@supercalime Жыл бұрын
@@zombiesingularity if I may add another perspective. I don’t think op meant that sex work is super safe and amazing and you should do it. It’s obviously a layered situation, that yes, has a lot of abuse and exploitation, that can result in horrible things. However, there are people who legitimately enjoy doing sex work, and maybe if there wasn’t so much stigma around people like Margo or Lola in “Cam” for example, maybe it would be a better environment for it to be normalized as a profession like any other. And lastly, another point op made was how it’s rare to see sex work portrayed in a positive light in media. Seeing something being positive in a movie doesn’t mean the creators intend for you to copy it. They are just showing it

13:50 Anya's "thank you" when the chef leaves was unscripted, she said it on the spot then after filming she regretted doing it because it might've come across as too passive agressive, the director left it on the final cut and she was relieved that they liked her last minute response, it perfectly suited her character's personality

"Freedom is not given by the oppressor, it must be demanded by the oppressed." While the other customers were protesting, they still respected the Slowick's wishes. One attempted to leave by simply asking politely yet firmly as opposed to forcefully pushing past, and the result was a loss of his finger. One of them attempted to break the window only to return to his seat when asked by Elsa. When Tyler was humiliated and told to kill himself, he did it without question. And none of the customers could refute Slowick's claims about their characters and their supposedly deserved deaths, always giving him the last word and allowing his chaos to continue. They remained complacent, believing themselves to be helpless victims unable to change their fates, culminating with them accepting their deaths and even thanking Slowick for allowing them to be a part of his concept. But Erin was the outlier. She realized by the end that she had zero respect for Slowick, having no history with him or knowledge of his decorated career. She refused to accept her fate and refused to put up with the Chef's antics. In the end, she gave him no ground and demanded better from him. As a result, the harsh critique placed Slowick in the position of having to cook to please someone rather than for some cynical and twisted metaphor. He cooked for her the dish he had likely cooked a thousand times when starting out in the culinary world, a time when he truly did enjoy cooking for people he would never know. Through the stubbornness of his customer, Slowick was reminded of the very reason he enjoyed cooking in the first place, and in a rush of emotions and gratitude, he set Erin free.

Plus, she gave him a scenario in which he found joy of cooking. She gave him an experience, a service. And by letting her get out he paid her for it. She used her skills from her job to find a way out, she found a script to use that stayed within his plans for the evening, but didn't involve her dying. :)

I like that because Margot is a high end escort, she can figure out what people need and provide it for them. That's what she did for Slowik. She saw he needed to find love in his craft again and by asking for a cheeseburger, she did that. I think she also realized that the staff and chef were committed to following through with every course, regardless how insane, and by asking for her course to-go, they had to follow through with that and let her leave. She was the only one who saw every action for exactly what it was. I love when a character actually shows how intelligent they are rather than us being told how intelligent they're supposed to be.

This movie is savage. It cuts hard and deep. And once you get past the sort of random arbitrariness of it, you realize it's literally about how we treat those who serve us. He loved to cook, until the people he cooked for made cooking taste bitter in his own mouth. He hates it now because of the critics and their useless bullshit, because of the sycophants who think they know. Hates it for the people who don't appreciate and enjoy the work that goes into making food. And it's interesting that he doesn't hold himself as some sort of "I'm better than you all" villain. He faces what he has done wrong and gets stabbed for it even. And he dies too. He doesn't know what to do with Margot because she's in the same exact situation... he doesn't know if she should die with them... the givers, or with the guests, the takers. That's what the barrel thing is for, a test, to see if she's a taker or a giver. When she fails he has no problems killing her. She realizes at the end he's lost the love and she gives it back to him, for just a moment. And that's why she gets to leave. She plays the part of the guest who wants something simple, fulfilling, good. She asks how much it will cost her. He makes it. She pays and asks for it to go and he grants it. Treat the people who serve you well. Respect them. Thank them. Appreciate them. Don't make them hate what they do.

The mother is such a neat little side character. There's so much there that's only hinted at, but we can guess from clues that she and her husband had a daughter, who the husband probably did bad things to. Daughter offed herself, and later the husband finds and hires Erin to pretend to be his daughter, since she looks like her. The mother even commented on this. It also makes sense as to why she wants Erin to just go in the end, because she either sees her daughter in Erin or she has realised the truth. Probably both, since she also accepts her fate. She probably knows what happened to her daughter and has been in denial about it, and see this death as her penance. She embraced it.

To me, this was a genuinely clever film because it really nailed so many topics from classism to how Chefs and other service providers are treated and what obsessing over the perfect dish vs enjoying the food is all about. Ironically, even though Chef Slowik was so close to completing his suicidal attempt, Margot somehow helped him because the first time in his life, he gets to cook a meal for someone who's actually hungry instead of an overly critical customer. He gets to feel pleasure one last time before he leaves this world. It's kind of sad but touching really. Even though Slowik was a sociopath, he still had a shred of humanity left by letting Margot go.

I *despised* Tyler and my nana said she wanted to punch him. She said that was how she knew Nicholas Hoult is an amazing actor.

I saw this with my nana and my Aunt, then when my cousin offered to let me choose the movie, I told him I wanted to watch The Menu. He loved it so much, he showed his brothers and my nana loved it so much, she wants to show my mom and we both know my mother hates horror movies. That's how enjoyable this film is.

Every reactor misses the true meaning of the "it's your dime" line and also I just realized it made no sense for Tyler to take pictures since he knew there was no reception so he couldn't upload them anywhere and he knew they were going to die that night. So why take them.
