I love The Love Witch! ❤ I also mentioned this film when THH did the horror fashion episode, because I love the 60’s/70’s inspired wardrobe and jewelry of this film. It’s entire aesthetic is all around gorgeous.

Pretty Horror is pretty special to me. If the aesthetic is truly spectacular, it lifts a film for me. Like it can push a film from mid to good if the aesthetic is incredible. And there are so many films in the horror sub genres that just do it for me aesthetically. However, I’ll mention just 5 because let’s face it, no one has that kind of time to read 20 paragraphs of me rambling on about films. 😂in fear of doing just that in THIS paragraph, let me get this proverbial ball rolling; as always, I’ve written these before watching the video because it’s always fun for me to find out which ones we do, or don’t, name in common. SPOILERS AHEAD: 1) The House That Jack Built (aka Utica’s favorite film…NOT 😂)- With a washed out color palette except for pop moments of bold red, this is a film who’s aesthetic is very near and dear to me. Mixing live action with animation, David Bowie music, and even bright stock wildlife clips, this film is a wonder for the senses. But When Jack is shot to death and descends into the circle’s of hell with Virgil from Dante’s Divine Comedy, the aesthetic and camera work becomes truly something otherworldly, unique and all together gorgeous to look at. Striking and disturbing as it is beautiful, even mesmerizing, only the distinct visuals of Von Trier could make hell look so heavenly. 2) Midsommar- The thing that makes this film passable for me IS the aesthetic, and the aesthetic only. Beautiful sun drenched, floral color palette meets incredible hand made costuming, stunning location shots and very cool art props and building design make for a film that is very, very pretty to look at…even if the rest of it is highly questionable, and maybe even a let down, follow up to the excellent Hereditary. 3) Pearl- In my opinion, when I think of pretty horror, this is a defining film that exemplifies the term. Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous. The vivid, nearly technicolor, color sheen in the film itself, the costumes, the makeup, the art direction, the pristine town period setting and period movie palace; all of it is GORGEOUS. Even the blood.😂 4) Interview With The Vampire- Making the most out of the darkness, seldom has any horror film been this beautiful when filmed in a nighttime setting. The setting of old New Orleans, Paris, tons of drenched candlelight, beautiful cemeteries, mansions, giant ships, extraordinary costumes and pale, PALE skin 😂 that serves only to make the blood look even more red, this film remains a truly enjoyable sight to behold. In many parts, it is breathtakingly beautiful. 5) Under The Skin- I know I mention this sci fi horror a lot; but that’s only because it’s so richly, beautifully made that there’s many numerous categories it falls into the realm of excellent in. Pretty Horror is one of them. So much so, Decider named it in the top 5 of their most aesthetically beautiful horror films. Where they said this: “Whether shot in remote beaches, urban streets or wild forests, Under The Skin is consistently beautiful to behold, yet never more so than in the detached black space that Scarlett Johansson’s character lures men to. The contrast between the natural beauty of the Scottish Wilderness and the stark negative space of the alien’s lair is astonishing, making these horrific scenes all the more disturbing.” It’s truly a beautiful film. Special Mentions: Pan’s Labyrinth, Audition, Antichrist (aesthetically brilliant, surreal and mesmerizing, it’s all a doom and gloom sheen though, and it’s not necessarily “pretty”. Well it’s pretty to ME. I don’t know, maybe I should have given it a number 😂), Crimson Peak, The Shining, Bram Stokers Dracula, The Love Witch, The VVitch Edit: Had to come back to write no one said any of mine 😂 except for my special mentions and their special mentions…well, I’ll take what I can get. 😂

To me I find a horror pretty if it sells me on a good aesthetic. And I am a sucker for a retro aesthetic. Like Last Night In Soho, House Of The Devil or Lisa Frankenstein. Those aesthetics were so pretty I wanted to jump into my screen and time travel.

My pick is Carnival of Souls. The use of lighting and shadows is so good. The look creates the perfect accompanying atmosphere. And second pick is Dante's Cove. The men are just wet. And there's full frontal. Visually, very nice, very nice.
