It’s so funny, I learned how to backpack over 20 years ago from NOLS and my first pack weight was 55 pounds. I had to brace the bottom of my pack on my knee, pull up the straps, and do a quick turn to get it on, often helped by my fellow backpackers. Carried weight was a point of pride! Nowadays my pack weight is less than half that, and my older body is much happier. 😂

Backpacking gear has come a long way over the last 20 years. Now we can go farther and spend more time out on trail feeling comfortable using lighter gear. Heck yes! I know my body is onboard with that.

Great pack up video!! I love that tent, but I wish it came in fun colors, to match the packs, too! Purple & teal dreams of town food!! I think a lot of us are adding flextail luxury items to our kits. I added the Nemo extreme to my kit this year too. I sleep so cozy on it! Great gear upgrades! I am excited for you! 🎉

That would be so much fun to have a purple tent, to match my purple Mariposa 60 pack! Although, I do kind of like that my tent can easily blend in at any tentsite I set it up at. Yay for lightweight luxury items. My FlexTail has been one of my favorite new pieces of gear I've used this year. No more feeling lightheaded when inflating my sleeping pad at the end of a long day!

I can no longer watch your videos unless I get a 2nd job. 😂 We have almost identical gear and have been hiking about the same number of years, then you pull out yet another awesome video with things I MUST HAVE. I don't need a poop kit, plastic ziplock has worked for years, but I want one with a funny stinky on the side. I have a nylon med bag, but not one with crossed bandaids on it. I have a light weight thermal bag to warm my food, but it doesn't compress down and I swear it is going to poke a hole in my Mariposa. I just picked up The One a few weeks ago based on your review and our similar gear likes. Also grabbed the 1/8" pad to go under it. I have to put stinky and owwie bags on my gift list now.

I love this and I 100% understand!! This is exactly how I feel whenever I buy new gear....I don't need it, but I really want it. The only way I justify new purchases is planning more trips. So off to backpacking I go for the summer!!

Have a wonderful time on the PCT. You've been a great source of info and inspiration for me. This summer I'm heading out for a week on the Colorado Trail. My first long solo trip (I've only done one solo overnight before) . 😮 I'm a bit afraid, but that's ok because I'm confident in my abilities. Fear isn't always a bad thing. Sorry, not sorry!!! This is exactly how I feel after coming home from a group backpacking trip. There's always something new I want to try out and buy! Hahahaha!! I didn't think I'd love the Big Sky Cozy as much as I do, but I do!! Packs down way lighter and easier than my DIY Backpacking Food Cozy. And the "Day Of" food bag - I couldn't resist. It's sooo cute!!

THANK YOU for the bra suggestion! I also love the Icebreaker hipkini briefs for my treks, but their bras don't come close to what my body would need. This bra looks like the perfect choice! Wish it was easier to try out in Canada though...

Where do you stow your trekking poles on this bag when you're not using them?

Great question. Typically when I'm on trail, my trekking poles are almost always in my hands. If I'm hiking over big boulders and need both hands, I'll stow my trekking poles in the big side pocket on the outside of my pack.

I got the Mariposa for a Merry Christmas to me! I have been finally able to take it on a maiden voyage. I am still trying to like trekking pole tent, but meh I am 60 yrs old.. I like my free standing tent when it's windy and I"m grumpy setting up LOL. Thanks for all the information you put out there.. It's always fun to hear another perspective and possibly new gear idea! You are appreciated.

Congratulations on the maiden voyage for your Mariposa 60! I'm still adjusting to the new trekking pole tent life myself, but the weight and space savings has been worth the learning curve to me. Thanks for watching and happy to hear that my videos have been helpful. I love that!

And maybe spend more money on gear than I really should... 🤫 But I also don't feel bad about that because I know you only ever recommend gear that works for you 😁 and I can trust. Maybe it won't work for me, but I'll give it a try knowing it's a quality piece of gear. FYI, hardly ever doesn't work for me, which just means more great gear ❤. Yes to all of this!!! Anyone who has ever spent time with me out on trail knows that any of the backpacking gear I talk about in my videos is gear I use in "real Life" out on trail. I also love seeing what works for others because I'm constantly tweaking my own gear selections to make the next trip even better.

I always love the videos of everything in your pack and then going through the lighter pack list! And you got the fun bandaids! Do the icebreaker underwear fit similar to the intraknit hipsters? Mostly curious about if they are similar in where the waistband sits.

I've been influenced by you!! You inspired me to add the fun bandaids to my First Aid Kit. Thank you! The Icebreaker underwear fits way more comfortably and snug than the Smartwool Intraknit hipsters. I liked the way to Intraknit hipsters fit, but they were a bit too lose whenever they got wet and they stretched out with wear. Every time I'd jump into an alpine lake, they'd fall off. Not great!! I noticed that Smartwool no longer has the Intraknit Hipsters on their website. I wonder if they were having complaints about how these fit?

The nights haven't been chilly out here in the Sierra this summer at all with this recent heat wave. Last minute, I did decide to add a pair of leggings to my pack. I've only been wearing those for more protection from the bugs.

Thanks for the detail on this video, very helpful. On the Gossamer Gear Mariposa, could you fit a one liter smartwater or similar in the half pocket on the side, and a tent on the other side? I always pack my tent on the outside for quick access, so I like storing it vertically in the side pocket. But that might not work with the Mariposa. It's a pack I've been eyeing, but not sure if I want to make other adjustments to make it work. Thanks!

Yes, a 1-liter Smart water bottle could fit into the bottom half size pocket on the outside of the pack. This is where I store my water filtration system. You can also easily use the other larger outside pocket to store a tent in no problem.

Im into bushcraft. Hikers are smarter going lighter. Some bushcraft guys are learning from hikers. Im learning both. Your food selection videos are awesome. Im goimg to do the same but with mylar bags to put boiling water in. Just got folding ultralight camping pad. It is super light. Im going to use it as a seat as well folded up.

Great video! Question, you mentioned you use a Nalgene bottle for your electrolytes, etc. What do you do with this container at night when in areas with bears? I'm sure it will have a smell, I love the watermelon flavor LMNT that def has a smell. What do you do with it at night since it's too big to go in a bear canister? TIA! BTW purple is also my favorite color, I'm quite obsessed with it, so anything I can get in purple I want!

Great question! For my section hike along the PCT, I used an Ursack to store all of my food and smelly items in while I was at camp. I also stored my small Nalgene bottle in my Ursack overnight as well. If you can't fit the 16 oz Nalgene bottle in your hard-sided bear canister, you can always try to rinse it out well and store it on top of your bear canister overnight. You won't want to keep this one in your tent with you.

I say pack whatever makes you comfortable. The gear you pack will really be dependent on where you're going and the type of trip you'll be going on. For example, depending on when and where you're going, you might not need a pair of microspikes or a bug repellant system and you also might not need a hard-sided bear canister.

Have you hiked the full way from Mount Sentinel to the other end of Crazy Creek? I have been wanting to do this but an too chicken to do it myself and my lady friend hikers don't usually hike that far in a day. If so, how long did it take you?

I typically like to "over-stock" my first aid kit, especially when it comes to medications, if not for me, but if I ever come across anyone on trail who might need help. And yes, I'll be doing a longer section hike this year. This isn't for a typical, overnight trip.

So far I've used it on one backpacking trip where the bugs were quite an issue at camp. I was happy I had this with me because it helped keep the bugs away and we were able to eat in peace. As someone who always seems to get eaten alive every summer, I'm about to head out to a heavily bug infested area and I'm really excited to put the Tiny Repeller S to the test. I'll report back once I've come back from my trip. I'm hopeful that I won't be eaten alive this year!

Hikers need to learn off Bushcraft people to. Im not carrying fuel. I do firewood. In a titanium stove.

With any kind of stove, you're going to need some type of fuel. If there's any sort of fire/burn ban, you can't have an open flame that uses firewood. Even with a fire/burn ban, hikers are still usually allowed to canister stoves.
