Aaron - "Advantages of a treestand"..... then offers none. So having used both here is my list: 1. better visibility. You do not have the tree obstructing your view. 2. far less movement to get a shot off. Saddles require you swing around up there like Tarzan. 3. easier to make shots to the weak side. This is a hard thing in a saddle that is IMHO under appreciated vs a stand 4. crooked and leaning trees. Much easier to handle in a stand. Saddles require you set up on the high side. Stands, you can do any side. 5. trees with limbs at hunting height. In a stand you actually want that for back cover. in a saddle, not so much. They prevent the swing around required for many shot angles. 6. adding and removing clothing layers.... far far far easier in a stand. It's a task in a saddle, and that's putting it lightly. 7. access to pants pockets and coat/jacket pockets... basically no go in a saddle. Full access in a stand. 8. far easier to maintain proper form and a solid base for the shot in a stand than a saddle. There are others, but in the interest of brevity... I've used both, and after having used both, I'm back in the Lone Wolf.

@@SufferingOutdoors everything that was said is 110% true, I couldn’t agree more with the listed statements. Only thing saddle has going is great marketing. I’ve got the xc cruzr and novix helo. The weak side shot costed me twice this year…I may be back to a hang on. Easy to say just move to back side or around tree..harder to pull off when the deer are already in on you. But, so easy to setup a saddle/platform and lighter to carry far.

I bought a second, identical climber for a different property...it is that good of a product! kzbin.infoUgkxlQ7TDIrnnSXXbRgFFaxqwullRJJIuYAs I have had the first one for 10 years and only have had to replace the plastic chain covers when they wear out from climbing pine trees. I don't use the climbing harness and strap that comes with this product since I already have upgraded that for comfort. I do save it for a guest though. It works fine, but takes a lot of work to strap in compared to aftermarket harnesses. I will buy this climber again when my daughter is old enough to climb. It is a very safe product and well designed.

I’m pushing 51 years old and have been climbing trees on the eastern seaboard since I was about 12 years old and still love my climbing stands. Honestly, just got into hang on stands in the last five years or so and still not 100% positive one thing. Between you knuckleheads and a friend of mine you have me seriously contemplating a saddle especially since I’m going to Kentucky next year and I know I will be doing a lot of walking. I'm a saddle hunter almost 100% of the time. However, I discovered an advantage of using a hang on stand instead. During the late season, in the cold states, it's nice using a larger platform for larger clothing and boots. Also, if someone were to wear bibs to stay warm, the saddle won't attach around their waste as well . Something for people to consider, especially those in the northern states. From mid November onward, I now use a hang on stand.

Right. A larger stand also allows for blood flow; allowing you to move around a bit more. Especially since most people are up in these stands for hours on end.

I’d like to see how you guys get up the tree from your pack set up, the order you do things and where you hang your sticks and platform as you go up? I always struggle with getting up the tree orderly. If you hang your platform on your back then you have a hard time accessing it once you get up to height. Seems like I’m all thumbs with the saddle set up and fixing to hang it up and just use a tree stand. I get how to pack everything for the walk in, just the set up portion is difficult for me. I never had anyone show me a good method. Thanks

I use 2 options over the last couple of years. The Block style stand which has a seat like u r sitting in a hammock. It is the only stand I will use cuz u can leave the block locked to a 🌳 & climb the 🌳. Then when u r just above the block u pull up the aluminum stand & slide it onto the aluminum block from above. I attach a small 6' or 7' ratchet strap @ the bottom to assure that it is 100% locked in. It has never made a noise on me. My saddle option is the Kestrel Flex by Aerohunter. In my mind I need to remain noise free,light & stealth as possible. Stealth is totally camo'ed out as well as motionless & scent free. I will be adding the camo finish this week to my new Wild Edge Embattlement which I will be using in 2021. When hunting public u need to be undetected in your gear & setups from people as well as your quarry. No spot is foolproof if u give up your ambush spot to both 2 & 4 legged creatures by being sloppy. I know that confidence is half the battle & no battle is won without a great game plan. Personal preference is true but it really comes down to the moment of truth & how u & your gear perform when opportunity knocks.

Off subject... Aaron's type of hat is crazy warm. You can also put it on over a ball cap to keep rain and sun out of your eyes. The flaps on the side can be folded up and snapped together over top your head if you get too warm. That and neoprene Muck boots best cold weather purchases I have ever made. Muck boots don't squeak either.

I'm 55, been a mobile hunting fanatic out of necessity for 40 years. Saddle is hard to beat for all the reasons you mentioned, the one big disadvantage for me is movement. At my age & where I hunt, the lone wolf sit & climb beats the saddle- not an issue packing even on long walks through muck and brush. Movement is what gets me busted in the saddle. I actually use both, the saddle as a safety system during the climb, even enables me to go around branches. Even with the saddle alone, you need climbing sticks- with the lone wolf climber, no need for sticks- if you hunt very high, the LW may be lighter to pack than sticks & saddle. It's a safe system as well since you have the top half of the climber, the bottom, plus your saddle connected to the tree the whole way up & down. Like you said, it comes down to personal preference, I'm sure there's older guys than me out there very successful with just the saddle.

Near barren pines are perfect, climb it up to the first cluster of greenery. 30lb stand + gear backpack I wear reverse. Used to backpacking & elk hunting so the lbs + elevation gain hikes in to hunt aren't a factor. Considered getting a hunting beast setup but unnecessary $ for my hunting scenarios.

Hang ons are by far the fastest, quietest way to get in and out of! However, with saddles they are super light, mobile, and comfortable. But they definitely have a learning curve. You must practice shooting from as it will completely change your form.

I use a climber when I hunt in areas that have gobs of straight trees just because its much quicker to get set up with one, but in other areas of my state with more brushy crooked trees I use my XOP stand and sticks.

Saddle, platform, tether, and lineman's rope. Other than that you'll need GOOD sticks. I had some cheaper Hawk ones that I used walking hills in Ohio this year. Way too heavy. I went to the XOP mini sticks and bought aftermarket cable aiders. Look at tethrdnation.com or you're welcome to check out the hawk saddle or one of the others. Their is an entire website devoted to saddle hunting.

trophyline has packs where all you need is a way up the tree and a platform. On private property I use pole barn spikes as a ladder and platform at the top I use 4-6 nails around tree as platform. cheap and effective and won't get stolen.

Tornado ruined my property few years ago. Along with some beetle that's is killing all the trees. I had one ladder stand left. Which i took down after gun season this year. The tree was in bad shape. I'm not investing in stands anymore. I'm making little ground forts like when we were kids and I'm buying a saddle this spring Just in case. Mobility is key and you show that.

I agree, saddle comfort is a very personal thing where different brands have different levels of comfort for different people. Find a local saddle meetup and try out as many as you can before buying. I love the predator platform but I found my personal comfort in a CRUZR XC after trying out many different brands.

I use a saddle only but I think that you move around a lot more in a saddle.. I think over all the shooting positions in most cases are easier from a treestand minus the directly behind the tree. I still love my saddle though. When carrying in lots of gear it's nice to have a lot less weight.

If I hunted public, there's no doubt Id have a saddle. Just alittle bit to loud setting up at time's, especially close to bedding on those quiet still mornings. I have 85 acres of private land and the deer don't vary much from what they do year to year. I prefer a stand for comfort now that Im alittle older.I also prefer carrying in next to nothing to reduce noise on the way to my stands. Used to take a backpack full of stuff and without much success, throw the whole arsenal at em lol. Now I take my bow and a few items in my pocket and have been consistently putting buck's on the pole. The whole less is more seems to be what works for me now.

You guys are doing a great job of sharing valuable information while also entertaining! We are all jealous of your (and your teams) job and skill. I know that almost all of the manufacturers are making great equipment and a lot of it is personal preference and values (money vs size vs weight vs usability), but in the following questions I am asking about your (and your teammates) personal preferences. Q1.) Have you ever tried the 2 panel saddles, and if so what do you think of them? For example a 2 panel saddle from Tethered is the Eberhart Signature Saddle. Q2.) Have you tried the Predator XL, and if so what do you think of it? Q3.) Are you going to stick with the standard Predator (because it is smaller, lighter, and cheaper) or upgrade to the XL?
@TheHuntingPublic
@TheHuntingPublic 3 жыл бұрын
We haven’t tried the 2 panel stuff yet but have tried the Predator XL. It’s considerably larger and I could see where it would come in handy for those with feet larger than size 12. It’s easier to stand on as well with the extra room but I ended up going back to the original Predator to save room. I didn’t see enough benefit to the larger one. However Greg prefer the XL over the original.

@@TheHuntingPublic Thanks. I ordered a Phantom and a Predator XL (my first saddle and platform) today to give saddle hunting a try. It was two hard decisions (Phantom or ESS and Predator or Predator XL), but I probably would have been happy with any of those products. Thanks for the reply.

I don't know, I'm kinda with him after hang ons, climbers, ladder stands, and wooden stands I still think my saddle is the most stealthy and can go almost any tree. Not locked down to a saddle but do love it after I hunt on ground or in another stand. Takes practice though

Did you see a big difference with shot angles? I’m trying to figure out how you get a shot off if you are shooting on your off hand side or behind your setup. Would you lean around the whole tree? I can definitely see a huge disadvantage when it comes to degrees of shooting coverage when in a saddle. Maybe make a video on how you approach different shooting angles?

Growing up in the southeast and hunting from climbing stands, both of these are foreign to me. I like the idea of the saddle. I believe Alabama law dictates that harnesses with shoulder straps have to be used. I know the saddle is probably safer than my climber and harness, but DNR may not see it my way.

I think some of the smaller/lighter stands will close the gap between saddles and cast aluminum hang ons. Some of the bigger saddle platforms aren't much lighter than the LWCG .5. Some people are even using the .5 with a saddle as a hybrid setup. I got a saddle last season and it's comfy except for longer sits, even with kneepads my knees start killing me from being against the tree. I don't want to stand the whole hunt either. I also fidget more in a saddle. I feel like it takes a lot more movement to get my bow ready than it does in a stand with my bow in the holder right next to me. The good thing about saddle hunting is that if you try and don't like it you can sell your setup and get most of your money back.
