I double as building maintenance at work, and local handymen are surprised when I say it needs to be drained about every 6 months. Glad to finally see a video from someone mentioning a 6 month time span.

I have a steel tank like this for my boiler at home and I've never drained it in 25 years

This is the exact video I needed to understand why the tank fills with water and that this is a regular, normal, and expected maintainence procedure. Liked and subscribed.

I found that I need to do it 2x a year. My expansion tank is used for the reheat system (radiators and vav box coils)

I have a few of these on some Ajax, our newer boilers have the bladder type tanks. I never seen the relief explode from water logging but I have seen the relief on the water feeder open and drain until it was below pressure.

Every year, I need to empty my older water tank. It does not have a way to allow air in . It took me awhile to figure out that I needed to empty it with a bucket and when it gets towards the end of emptying , it starts to inhale the air itself. I know I need to eventually change out the valve to allow for air to come in as I empty it. My tank is always waterlogged by the end of the season. Crazy that there is only a regular valve (open/close) with no air intake. That's why I'm here to figure out if I need to empty until no water comes out. Its been sucking in air for about 15 minutes so I think that may be sufficient. Thanks for this

Early in the video you turn off water valves to isolate the expansion tank instead of draining the whole boiler system. At the 8:20 mark in the video when you slowly open valves and hear water is that water going back into the expansion tank?

Can the air in in the expasion tank ever migrate to the system? or is there some kind of check that prevents this?

Fluid dynamics and thermal dynamics will answer your questions. Air and water are a fluid. They travel from high to low and hot to cold.

I have this for my home but it doesn't have a hole for the air to come out. There is only a drain for the water to come out. I just purged my boiler. Do I need to do anything to the expansion tank?
@karenflowers9611
@karenflowers9611 2 жыл бұрын
That's my situation . For me, I do not purge my boiler, I turn off the water to the expansion tank and empty it. It took me 2 MONTHS to figure out that I needed to use a bucket instead of a hose so that the air can be gulped in by the tank. A retired HVAC guy on a community thread saved my ass by making that comment. I know this is a response by a post from 10 months ago but if I can help anyone else ..

Most expansion tank do not have an air inlet. Hot water displaces the air. It is a tedious process to drain it unless you have a tool like I do.

My old steel expansion tank at home doesn’t have an air inlet. So I purchased a Bell & Gossett drain-o-matic drain valve plus air inlet. Have to install it though. I saw the drain o matic mention by Steve Lavimoniere at his channel.

Two questions: After draining how do you know when enough air has entered the expansion tank to close off airtrol air inlet valve nut on the bottom of tank? Secondly, why is water immediately going back into expansion tank upon opening the isolation valve?

I have a steel expansion tank on the second floor of my house. Vertically installed, but has no valves anywear, just one pipe at top. I’ve lived in house 43 years, heat working fine, but this year the pressure went to 30 and water started spewing out from release pipe. How will they be able to check the steel expansion tank? I’m worried that because of faulty expansion tank(never checked) they will say I need new boiler. I assume it’s the expansion tank, not a bad pressure release valve because it does not leak below 30. (I’ve been draining water from the radiator to lower pressure, is that dumb or smart)...I guess what I’d like to know is what to expect when HVAC person comes? Thank you.

you shouldn't need to replace a boiler due to a faulty expansion tank. The easiest way to check a tank is to knock on the outside. half the tank is hollow, the other half is air. That would give off different sounds. Is the pressure always up around 30 or starts around 12 and goes up when heating? Is the tank in this video similar to your tank kzbin.info/www/bejne/i3i2p5KdZpuljtU

So I have a dumb question...(just trying to understand here) where is the air going, that you need to keep draining and recharging with air? Is the tank leaking out all of the air and letting it waterlog? Or is there an air separator in the system that is letting the air out of the system thru the air separator?
@larryzdanis5377
@larryzdanis5377 3 жыл бұрын
I think that's probably the case.. Air makes its way from the tank and into the flow stream and then gets removed elsewhere in the system. Some may also leak out of the tanks.

Sorry...I'm new to all this. What is water logging? is it basically no air in the tank?
@thehvachacker

Yes the tank is full of water, instead of half air and half water. Not much room for expansion of pressure when water is heated

The way he drains his tanks explains why he has to do this every 6 months. If the tanks had sight glasses to see the water level you could go a year or more without draining. To do it faster and properly you should have an air compressor. Less work and faster.

At least your air inlet valve is good... nothing like having a waterlogged tank and seeing the air inlet is full off corrosion.

If the system is already hot, do you still have to shut down the boiler and pumps or can you just isolate the tank?

When you reopen that value does the tank fill up again?
@tonymanero5544
@tonymanero5544 4 жыл бұрын
The tank after draining is filled with air. When inlet valve is reopened, some water goes to the tank then the water is pushed against air and stops rushing in.
@hubert187
@hubert187 3 жыл бұрын
@@tonymanero5544 @carmcb I think its filled with atmospheric pressure (like an empty bottle of coke with the cap off). Then you refill it and it compresses the air.

Its a compression tank not an expansion tank. An expansion tank has an air bladder...i know the term is synonymous.....but lets teach it correctly. Just like everyone calling a service valve a king valve.....a king valve is only on the outlet of a receiver. Yeah it sounds like im being petty....but teaching the correct way can teach someone properly.

Stupid questions from a firefighter/licensed sparky who has hydronic heating in my home. My HVAC “go to guy” was a close friend and fellow firefighter who chose HVAC as his side gig. Sadly, he recently passed away after dealing with “Long Covid” & heart problems, ALL which all mysteriously began in 2021. 🦠😷 -> 🤔 While I attempt to locate a 🚫 (was gonna say “replacement”, but he can’t be replaced IMHO), I’m attending KZbin vocational school. 😂

I have a Weil McLain CGa5 natural gas boiler with 6 (zone valve controlled) baseboard hydronic heating zones. (Home is 30 yrs old / original boiler replaced in 2017) On Christmas Eve, the house couldn’t achieve a temperature higher than 58° F. Long story short, the electronic control board was defective. It’s apparently a huge issue with Weil McClain & Williamson boilers mfg’d in the late 2010’s that used the same board. The unit “locks up/freezes” with 140° on the display. While swapping the board, I attempted some basic preventative maintenance and cleanup of the area. I also removed the burner tubes and brushed / vacuumed each one and the pan and then replaced everything. BUT… My Wife & apprentice 😆 asked me “aren’t you going to drain the boiler and refill w/fresh water and empty the *expander* ?” She had steam heating in her late 1890’s home and her father had apparently done that twice a year and tried to teach his daughters everything about home maintenance. “Just in case they ended up unmarried spinsters 🤣” With a closed hydronic heating system, is that necessary? Good or bad? Should any chemical treatment be done whenever refilling the system for any reason? (we have extremely hard water with no conditioning if that matters) Also.. I have an Amtrol expansion tank for the system. Is that something that should be checked / charged / tested / replaced regularly? Awesome channel & videos - THANK YOU!!
