After going to both the Daytona 500 and the new Atlanta this year, I felt like they were different. Atlanta honestly felt more unpredictable and “sketchy” with how small it is compared to Daytona, and it was extremely fun to be there and watch in person! It felt different enough to where I love both for different reasons, but I agree we need to keep this to just Atlanta. Let it be a special race like no other.

Eh, kinda? Felt like a mid-tier Daytona race. In and of itself, that’s fine… but I’m worried this will create the same short-sighted enthusiasm that followed the 2017 xfinity race at Indy and the 2018 all star race. I don’t want more superspeedway racing. I just want fast mike and a half racing like we used to see. Run Atlanta with 670 in the summer. Let them hit 200 on the front stretch. If IndyCar is comfortable sending those rocket ships around Texas at 230, a full-bodied stock car should be safe at 210 (assuming horsepower increases for 2023, which is should)

The tire issues were camber related and should be figured out soon. NASCAR remembers what happens when it added too many Mile and a half tracks in the 2000s, so I don't think they'll make every other one like Atlanta. The same fears were talked about after the Charlotte Roval.

If I were Nascar I would experiment with the 670 package for the July race. Auto Club and Vegas showed that the nextgen car is good enough on its own to generate great racing without having to resort to desperate measures. There also seems to be a divided fanbase on whether this was a good race while the other package was close to a unanimous consent.

How fast are they going to end up going if they do that? Probably fast enough to put them into the fence, and possibly the crowd. I completely agree! I enjoy superspeedway racing though so I thought the race was entertaining it was pretty much what I thought we would get from a mini-Daytona. But that being said superspeedway racing is fun because it's only 4 times a year... it shouldn't be a regular staple. A sport that continuously relies on gimmicks is not a sport. It's theatre... or sports entertainment ie WWE. But NASCAR has been going down that road since the Chase was invented so don't be surprised if they managed to get it wrong...AGAIN! And I do hate that they did this to one of the better tracks on the schedule. If they wanted to run an experiment on a 1.5 I wish they would have done it to Kentucky or Texas.

I liked the race. I'm a Superspeedway fan, so I got more of what I enjoy. Attrition, unpredictability and contact-racing is what brings me to NASCAR. Otherwise I'd tune in exclusively to F1. I don't want more reconfigurations like this, though. At the moment, with the current set up, it feels perfect to me. We've got six superspeedway races, six road course races, and a bunch of stuff in between. That is a good bunch of variety and that is healthy for this sport. I think NASCAR has the wherewithal to not jump the gun and do this to all the 1.5 miles. SMI is the real wildcard.

I am in the small group that seems to have really disliked the race. I dont think we need more superspeedway type racing as Daytona and Dega are enough. Both for pack racing and teams wallets as alot of stuff go smashed in those wrecks with the talked about part shortages, doesnt really help teams. The racing itself was boring. Yes you had lots of lead changes, but really outside of the top 3 cars nothing really happened but just sit side by side. You were not really going to gain anything on track. Most of your track position needed to be made on pit stops. It was pretty much a 1 groove race around the top as the bottom could not really generate a run with 3-5 cars nose to tail. You had to have that big run to get around the leader, otherwise you couldnt pass them. They took one of the drivers favorite tracks that would show talent at running fast and saving tires and ruined that. Also the filled stand this year will be an outlier on the graph. Need to see what it looks like in the fall race and then next year. If the numbers maintain or grow will show it was a good move if they fall off fast then the race was a novelty as it was a new layout.

Personally, I loved this race! Never in all my years did I expect such an amazingly great show on my birthday. Why, if somebody had told me when I started listening to the races live midway through the 2017 season that Atlanta would become a superspeedway and one of the drivers from Hendrick Motorsports would end up winning that race when I turned 23 that day, I might have believed them. But I agree with you as well Jared. This has to be the only mile-and-a-half superspeedway. Make sure that Kentucky is still six feet down under. Maybe bring back Chicagoland and give it a repave, but don't reconfigure it into a superspeedway. Leave many, if not all, of the current tracks as they are. I think your take is reasonable. NASCAR sadly has become more and more gimmicky, leaning more into entertainment and slowly destroying their credibility. I agree that the Texas Race for Indycar shows that it wasn't as necessary even with Firestone rubber absolutely despising PJ1. But it does make sense when it was made. They didn't know if the Gen 7 car would do well, so the reconfig was a back up to ensure a decent product. Now they've overdone it and hopefully NASCAR won't make the short-sided decision to make most if not all 1.5 mile tracks mini-superspeedways. But given their recent track record, I wouldn't be surprised if they did. They get a golden opportunity, and they'll still find a way to fuck it all up

I don't think SMI or NASCAR will try to turn all their 1.5 mile tracks into baby super speedways. The only ones I could imagine it happening at are Chicagoland and Auto Club. For the former it's never been repaved and NASCAR is obsessed with trying to break into the Chicago market, though I suspect they view Chicagoland as too far away from the city now. For Auto Club they might be thinking, "Well, we need to resurface the track anyway, and if we want to do a short track we can just go back to the Coliseum." All the other track where they might try this have been resurfaced in the last 10 years or so. Would they really throw another 10 to 20 million at those tracks so soon? Then there's Pocono, which has not been doing so hot for a while. Might they do something crazy like raise the banking to try and keep their race?

This is the first time however that I agree with him whole heartedly, I honestly did not like the racing. They keep saying "46 Lead Changes, 46 Lead Changes!" But that was purely from back and forth being unable to truly pass. This race was the epitome of slot car racing as quite literally it was guys stuck in a line until cars touch one crashes or a tire blew. And unlike normal plate races where any car could be competitive and win this felt way more reliant on having a high end quality car. If it wasnt for crashes most of the mid pack and backmarker cars would have finished poorly, it honestly was such a dissapointment

I agree that I do not want to see this at places like Texas and Vegas, or Charlotte for that matter. Texas need a repave and reconfiguration though. I just don’t have any ideas on what that should look like.

Yeah, I agree with most of what both you and Eric said. I enjoyed the race for what it was (8/10), but I couldn't help but feel like something was off. Unfortunately, NASCAR has had a history of looking for short-term victories without looking at the big long-term picture. I'm okay with this configuration staying as long as it's ONLY at this track and THIS track alone. I want to see how things would work with the 670-package and no yellow (red) line rule though.

The radius of the turns are way too tight compared to daytona/dega the cars had the speed but the added wheel input limits making moves in the turns ..... this track should have never been built..... they should have gone back to the original configuration if they wanted high banks. Now that would have been great I remember ATL being the fastest track on the circuit with those long half mile turns

I think you hit the nail on the head. It made some sense to convert Atlanta, as it's track surface was old anyway. However I wouldn't go do this for every 1.5 miler. The new car was literally built around the 1.5 miler, short tracks, and road courses. If you turn everything back into a SuperSpeedway, kind of eliminates the point of the new car.

Another reason to consider doing this to Texas is 1) Texas sucks. We all agree on that and 2) there’s ZERO options for central US and west coast race fans to see a “reasonably close” super speedway race. I live in TX, yet it’s still 2,200 miles roundtrip for me to go from Amarillo to Talladega, which I’ve done 3 times now. A more “centrally located” super speedway option would be WONDERFUL for west coast and central based NASCAR fans. Super speedway fans in Oregon or Utah might not ever be able to afford a trip to Alabama, or Florida, or now Georgia. Texas cuts that’s travel distance (and cost) in half.

I agreed with you on some points but I think yesterday's race was a good one. With better tires and less wrecks I feel ot could have been great. I went to the last Atlanta race before the repave and I thoroughly enjoyed the action. This entertainment based style of racing has its place but I also hope NASCAR won't change all the 1.5 mile track to this. The NexGen doesn't need that to be successful

I loved this race. I agree not every single 1.5 mile track needs to be like this, but devils advocate. We added more road courses for the entertainment based on 3 or 4 really good race at those type of track. So now that we have 3 superspeedway type of race, 6 races now, I say we got a good mixed bag in order to showcase all types of racing.

My wife and I REALLY REALLY enjoyed the race. Some of the wrecks were caused by teams overstressing the right rear tire. The new track layout makes watching at the track easier as the laps are shorter. We will be back.

I agree with you on all points. Actually, I'm even more extreme and haven't liked Atlanta since Bruton first changed the layout from the original oval to the quad oval config; during that era, I was convinced Bruton Smith literally only knew how to build one shape of track. The original Atlanta was iconic and it was unique, but ever since then it's just been a YAQO (Yet Another Quad Oval). Don't get me wrong, I love Charlotte and even like Texas, but that doesn't mean it should be copied endlessly. The tracks on the schedule need to have their own unique identity, and for the longest time NASCAR has just repeatedly built the same shapes over and over again. Yes it's harder to be unique with an oval than road courses, but it can be done. Hopefully NASCAR figures this out long term and gets away from the cookie cutter mentality.

I love off throttle time at 1.5-mile tracks as much as any fan, but my God what we saw was incredible. How could anyone complain that it wasn't exactly the same racing as Daytona or Talledega? The fact that it's pack racing but a little bit different in it's own way makes it unique and feel very special. And if a driver had a good car, they were able to pass and slingshot each other, drivers would come from the back of the field to the top 10 time and time again. Saying they couldn't pass is completely false. I'm honestly baffled that there is any sort of pessimism after that spectacular race. Just like The Iceberg, I'm an old school race fan. And the only thing I can agree on in this entire video is that it should definitely be the only 1.5 mile track they do this to. If we have more than 6 of these type races, then no it wouldn't be as exciting or special after a season or two. 6 is the perfect number.

I wouldn't be surprised if they did one on the west coast because they are all in the deep south. If they do I hope they reduce daytona and Talledaga (and everywhere) to only one date so each race is still different. It would have been a lot cleaner without the tire issues but it seemed like a setup issue rather than a tire issue. Overall, I liked it because the cars appeared to still need to handle well and people could work through the pack if they had a good handling car. I think it will be quite interesting to see what we get as the track ages.

I enjoyed the race at Atlanta, I might even make the trek from Ohio to see a race at Atlanta because of the new superspeedway set up, what's wrong with that??? Been watching NASCAR for 30 years and I loved Atlanta and I don't feel bad for loving it either... If they want to do this at all 1.5 miles tracks I'm all for it... 2018 all-star package was not the same as 550 package, Atlanta was the 2018 all-star package and the is what I wanted all along... Thank you SMI and NASCAR... We all enjoyed it here...

The race overall was entertaining. I do agree that the tires need to be stronger and more durable for less accidents to occur (whether it be the drivers pushing it too hard or not). I also agree that AMS should be the only 1.5 superspeedway with its newly one-of-a-kind reconfigurated track. If any other tracks get repaved like AMS I'll be yawning of boredom.

For Atlanta? It worked this year. Now NASCAR has a baseline to work from. The major speedway package didn't work at Atlanta the way they wanted though. Need to trim the spoiler down a bit, say 5.5 to 6in tall. Play with the Atlanta package a little, and use iRacing. It will help. Get the package right, and Atlanta could move up to the level of Bristol, Martinsville, and others

Being at the race yesterday in person I honestly really enjoyed the environment was great for fans and the races even though it was nascar throwing something at a wall to see if it would stick, it still was honestly good from a spectator point of view. It was racing that had the likeness of a plate track but it’s own unique twist so to speak. In my opinion though I think this “super speedway” thing should have been done to Texas because the racing can’t get much worse there and if you really had to do anything to Atlanta maybe give it more progressive banking like Miami but this should by no means be done to every track. This could very well end up like it was when all the mile and a half’s broke onto the scene we have to keep that diversity of the tracks on the schedule because that’s what makes nascar great getting to see different racing week in and week out.

Atlanta was due for a facelift when it came to the racing. I think the repave benefited more for the trying to sell tickets. I was at the race last year in July before the repave and I could count on my hands how many people were in the crowd. I do agree though. I thought the race was great and amusing but having superspeedway style racing on all 1.5 mile tracks isn't the move. It's best if we only have have one and I think ATL is perfect for it.

So honestly, this isn’t really a super speedway. It may look like it from outside perspective, but if ya take the glasses off it’s basically a normal 1.5 mile track. If anything the only thing keeping it a super speedway style race is the package they’re running. I noticed during the Xfinity race, and Xfinity was running a hybrid of the super speedway package running the engines at around 500hp or whatever their engine package is for Daytona and Talladega, with their normal spoiler which is 4 inches, when they were onboard with Austin Hill in the lead, he was actually lifting through the corners while leading. So I think really if ya give the cars the normal package and actually treat it like a 1.5 mile track, so give Cup the 670hp with 4 inch spoiler, it’ll actually race more like a 1.5 mile track than a super speedway. It’ll probably race more like a Las Vegas/Kansas, slight Charlotte. If anything all NASCAR, SMI, and AMS really just did to Atlanta was find a way to recreate the 2018 All-Star race with the early 550 package. So realistically, Atlanta isn’t a baby Daytona or Talladega, it’s just the package.

So I thought the race was pretty good but that being said it needs to remain a spectacle and be the only one for sure, also after saying that of course NASCAR / SMI made the decision to reconfigure Atlanta before a bunch of the next-gen testing had even been done so I believe if NASCAR would have been able to see into the future and see how well this new car actually races they probably would not have done any reconfiguration, now I'm on the same lines of this topic in regards to Texas I think it's probably up in the air of what it's going to happen to it, one saving Grace of it may just end up being how well the Indy car race ended up being, but I do think they need to do something with turn morning too because that just ruined the track in my opinion, if they do end up doing some kind of reconfiguration to half of the track at Texas I think they can rely on iRacing pretty heavily after seeing that I racing is what they went off to achieve a one and a half mile super speedway style race and considering that really nobody coming into the weekend thought that would actually end up happening but it did so I think they could actually end up pretty much having a awesome race track with Texas if they will just play around with a bunch of different configurations on iRacing in order to achieve the best style track for this car

I'm definitely going to miss that old slick track but I'll deal with this and see were it goes. Hopefully Nascar doesn't do this to any others.
