The method of coloring cake batter and dropping the colors on top of each other to bake into patches is something I found in a Camouflage cake mix. It turned out great and that’s what I call that method.

The color is more vibrant when you heat it up because: think about butter, it’s opaque when it’s solid and more translucent when it’s melted. So when you heated the buttercream it was made more translucent. Color shows up better in clear things than opaque things. It’s like adding red food coloring to water vs milk.

What type of coloring are you using? When I was doing Swiss meringue before we used the gel coloring and I didn’t fold in, I whipped in while the mixer was still bringing the butter into the mixture... maybe this helps?
