This is a bluetooth-controlled RC paper airplane. I think this would be a fun challenge for those looking to test their paper airplane folding skills. If you are hoping for a quick fix though, I don't think this is the toy for you.
Enjoy!

Just to let you know, your planes were highly unstable due to the anhedral angle on the wings (they point down), which means the centre of mass of the plane is above the centre of lift, making it unstable. Simple way to fix it is to make it dihedral by bending the wings up to form a shallow V on the wings.

Hey Ryan Thanks for the review and persistence, don't give up! we have BTW additional designs and support and tips on the website. From the videoI can see that the issue is with your paper plane wingtips which are not folded up properly creating too much pitch up behind the CG, this is why you had a nose dive. The basics is PowerUp 3.0 must glide well before you add power to it, once it does you will have a blast.

Hey power up you are right it's needs more dihedral and no anhedral

Back in the early 80's I used to make the DaVinci paper plane in class. Would fly over black top on recess break and would catch thermals for 30 to 40 second flights (best flying design I know of my father taught me to fold). I got the Power Up kit a month ago from my local Fry's and it is complete joy. Really brings me back to my childhood. I get three to four minute flights per toss. Excellent product, much better then the Whooper paper airplane control module because the Power Up has a rudder vs Whooper dual prop thrust vector control.

+Jeff Valentine Thanks! Yeah, I am actually pretty surprised by the activity this video is getting. I didn't really expect it to get that much interest. I guess there is something in the core of flight enthusiasts that paper airplanes appeal to. I will have to make a better attempt at getting a good fold, and give this thing another flight video when the weather allows. :)

it would be fun to design a foam body for it. or as suggested, try to configure it for a balsa wood glider. I think paper is just to unforgiving to the elements to be a stable platform.

I've had some really successful flights about 3, 4 minutes a pop. it needs dihedral, and I've found if unpowered it wants to almost stall then glide in a single toss it's the perfect amount of lift to throttle then it's just a matter of tweaking...
@supra2k8
@supra2k8 8 жыл бұрын
Like many people have mentioned, tilt the wings up, so it kinda looks like a "Y" from the back on the brown plane you had. I know how to make that plan and how to make it really balanced. Try that and try to fly it without the power on, once you have it balanced, it should fly with the power on.
@ProChoiceJesus
@ProChoiceJesus 8 жыл бұрын
The first, brown one had antihedral (wings bent downwards) folded into the wings. You need dihedral (wings bent slightly upward). The reason it flipped was a natural departure to the preferable dihedral.

Few things to mention: -don't use the red plane because it's too flimsy and thin -the water proof paper will work better if you can make the creases sharper by pressing a plastic card along the folds -the reason why the water proof paper flies upside is because the wings are pointing downwards, so trying pointing the wings upward a little bit -go test the paper plane first without the power up so you won't end up braking it Hope this helps, it would be awesome if you can make an update video if you get it working :)

if it won't glide: it won't fly: Test glide first. Wings should have an upward tilt like a V slightly, then it won't fly upside down. Launch it as it would fly, slightly down and at flying speed. EVERYTHING should be symmetrical, always. Of course, yes, always into the wind.

The biggest issue here does appear to be improper Center of Gravity.. It would be cool if you could slide the main battery weight forward or backward to find the correct CG. It appeared WAY nose-heavy in the video. Cool idea, seems like it could use some work though.

+Stephen Rumer The biggest issue, actually, was my lack of dihedral in my fold. I need to correct that before I can hope for any success. :)
@Quick_in_and_out

Ryan, I'm no expert but from my way of understanding this thing, you are approaching it all the wrong way. Think of it this way, paper is so light that it would have absolutely no chance of supporting a weight on top of it's body. Especially through turns, because as soon as it banks the weight will pull the plane over. I think the drive should be on the underside. You have connected the drive to the correct location on the paper but it should be thrown out of your hand in the upside down position. Obviously you will need to fold the aerofoils to the opposite direction in which you had them. So by using this method, the engine will create drive and the aerofoils will provide the flight stability. Then the rudder will be able to give the direction by pushing the air in the chosen direction. With the weight on the underside, the plane should be stable enough to control. Just a guess, without being hands on, it's impossible to say for sure. Worth a try if you haven't already tried it (or given up and burned it! lol).
@theimacman
@theimacman 8 жыл бұрын
+W Bond I think the entire problem was basically that I didn't have enough dihedral in the wings... they should've been angled up much more. As for the hardware, I definitely had it on as per the instructions.

Wings need to be properly even and straight. Your wings are hopelessly concave and have lost all dihedral angle required for stable and consistent flight on the DaVinci model. On the red beginner model you have similar uneven traits. The commenter who mentioned that test flying the plane prior to mounting the motor and prop is correct. I have built hundreds of paper airplanes- dozens of "WhiteWings" which are advanced layered heavy paper planes that are high performance (seriously) and just like real planes, geometry and proper construction are key. Keep those flexible planes shown here in between the pages of a very large and heavy book. Just before flying, carefully form the plane back into shape from the compressed "stored" shape. If the wings are flat and not curved down or warped, and if the tabs are all very straight, then you will begin having success. Incidentally the world record for a paper airplane to stay aloft is well over 3 or more hours. The inventor of the "WhiteWings" paper airplanes, a Japanese man I believe, rubberband catapult launched one of his designs from a mountain and "tuned the paper airplane to hold a gentle and steady turn. He caught thermals all afternoon long.
