Do you have to pay a yearly subscription for the gps ? I know for the weather map overlay you do.

Yeah, it's 100$ a year for the subscription. It gives you access to map and ride command updates. I would say only pay the fee when there is an update. its been 2 years since the maps were updated and a year since the ride command was updated
