The creepiest thing I heard was during BEAST week in basic training. We had to wear full MOPP gear (chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear protection gear with a gas mask) and hide in a bunker. They played this awful wavering tone siren that I still remember very clearly in my head. It was around 80 degrees and the gear basically added 10 degrees to your body temp and the gas mask causes a bit of disorientation because you're breathing becomes a bit restricted. All of that with the siren had my anxiety pretty high.

Rotational sirens are better to hear even with closed windows. The best system of warning is combination of sirens and loudspeakers, like in Japan and Switzerland. Removing old sirens is a bad move, you can power them by anything.

Real talk, I'm so glad that you pointed out that the Chicago siren _wasn't_ broken. Because it reportedly wasn't; I've found multiple recordings of what seem to be the sirens going off in separate storms, as well as reports of it being because people were ignoring the (mostly) monotone sirens. Of course, not being from Chicago, I cannot confirm this. But I really highly doubt it's broken.

I grew up in downtown St. Louis, in a bad cul-de-sac/ghetto with a forest adjacent, so it had a really unsettling sort of vibe from how everything was kinda broken down. I think it was for tornado sirens, but I would frequently hear what sounded like air raid sirens randomly emanating from the unknown distance- I was less than 8 years old and it was always horrifying! With the bang one, I was near a railway line, and they had firecrackers that would go off to warn track workers up ahead that a train was coming. Well I was right next to the firecrackers when they went off, and I thought someone was shooting me and I immediately got that fight or flight response. Also with the last one about the animal noises, no animal noise is more worse than hearing SCP-096 screaming at you.

03:29 the first "weird sound from your radio" noise. I listened to it again with my volume turned down a little and it had nowhere near the effect of hearing it loudly. It jarred my nerves for sure.
