Navy vet here (Former FC stationed on a few carriers). Watch the documentary about sinking the USS Oriskany. Carriers are incredibly tough to sink. Check out the Bikini Atoll nuclear tests. The USS Saratoga (CV-3) didnt sink when the first one went off. Also the USS Kitty Hawk was used as a test platform to see what it would take to sink a modern carrier. The Navy was surprised on how hard it was to sink her using missiles, bombs, and torpedoes. Are carriers indestructible? No. But they are very hard to sink successfully.
@susanchin41172 жыл бұрын
I thought A Electromagnetic Railgun may be able to sink any aircraft carrier. The railgun will drill into the body of the carrier and explode inside. Unlike the torpedoes only damage the outer body of the carrier. That is my understanding. correct me if I am wrong.

@The Quiet Kid China is already pushing carriers further and further out because of their hypersonic weapons, carriers have no reasonable defense. Carriers are a total and utter waist of money. The Swedish diesel sub for example, can pre-emptively strike but with enough firepower in one hit? I'm not so sure - the carrier has many layers of redundancy to ameliorate against 2-3 good hits. As to the comment that in 2006 a Chinese sub surfaced in the midst of a task force, and then states the that the task force did not know the sub was there. Just because the public statements said they did not know it was there because they were not actively looking for it, does not mean that they weren't looking. They are always looking. The sub was not considered hostile, so no action would have been taken, and let the other side think they got away with a PR gain. As one who flew ASW back in the late '60s, our air group had a technique that allowed us to detect and track a US Boomer. The only people we told about it was our own senior staff all the way up including the sub commands. I'm sure the subs are harder to detect these days and am equally sure detection techniques are better as well. We used to play games with our attack subs. This allow both sides to get better which is what war games are all about.

None of this analysis touched on what happens if the carrier gets hit. That's the crucial part of how sinkable a ship is. In war, nothing goes perfectly. A carrier WILL get hit if attacked enough. How thick is its armor above and below the waterline? How good is its comparmentalization to minimize fires or flooding? How well-protected are the ship's magazines? Apparently none of this matters, because the Ford-class carriers exist in a world of perfect military efficiency and can never be hit by anything, ever.

Man has never made anything that cannot be destroyed, that is literal "anything", by the way. Do not fall into that stupid false sense of security. *NEVER* underestimate an opponent, *NEVER* . The fact that you think it cannot be sunk means that you don't really understand how weapons work. In a time of war a weapon will b e created to do exactly that, even if such a weapon does not exist today. Hell, they could just nuke it with that low flying missile they just showed off, or one of a similar design. One direct hit with a nuke and it is going to the depths, that is a guarantee. I know, you said; "no it can’t be sunk by any ship or aircraft", that is a cop-out and I won't let you get away with taking the easy way out.

@benhayunga78866 жыл бұрын
The ocean is vast. No matter how big your fleet is, it can never be everywhere in the ocean at once. Sinking this ship would be easy. If a chinese ship popped up in the middle of a military drill without being detected, then saying "Yeah but in war" is a completely nonsense excuse. During many military war games, there ships are active as if they were "in war" swedish ships constantly sunk this carrier with no reprecussions, to the point that America leased the swedish subs to try and find ways to counter it. So yes, even today it can be destroyed. We can currently make water based drones. Water based kamikaze drones could totally sink this this ship easily. It really is becoming obsolete.

Aircraft carriers are not like battleships. They are not meant to engage directly in combat. They are basically just mobile airbases. Carriers always travel in strike groups consisting of destroyers, cruisers, subs and other smaller vessels that surround the carrier. These escorts are responsible for naval attack and defense. The carrier is just the ride for the aircraft cover and acts as the strike group’s command center. As long as aircraft are essential in naval warfare, large carriers that can deploy and maintain a powerful air presence anywhere in the world will always be necessary.

After a torpedo is fired and the Ford goes full speed that a 30-1hour chase before the torpedo can hit the carrier , while the ford fires anti torpedo at the torpedoes, and in turn the sub is dead by firing, the only real chance for the sub is a nuclear torpedoes.. and that WW3... I’ve got an idea for an anti-ship weapon: Lies on the seafloor, absorbing and pressurizing gases. Sinks ships via either remote control or some sort of sonar to trigger it, and when triggered, it rapidly releases the gases, reducing the density of the water and making any ship sink to its doom.

Well sea mines are already a thing
@Phoenix-oq2bu3 жыл бұрын
This is a good idea, however it would need to be massive in order to sink a ship the size of a aircraft carrier

Just fly a toy drone around the deck. That will ground all the aircraft

@@dovisdambrauskas6840 where are the engines again? Also even if where crashed and cause fire to the deck of course navies are skilled on outting fires and stopping flood in the middle of the operation.

I have seen the replica built by japan in honour of the Yamato. And the replica itself almost made me faint. I can't even imagine the sheer size of the real Yamato.
