3 soldiers died in training on the Brecon Beacons doing stage 1 in 2013. Also the raid on the Iranian embassy is probably the most impressive thing any special forces has accomplished. It will be interesting to see the full extent of SAS involvement. There has to be a reason they are the most respected and feared special forces in the world

ItsOnlyMat yes SBS was found first, but SAS fought crucial parts of WW2 as did the SBS, however SBS are more about marine operations hence the name Special Boat Service. The SAS were the more land based special forces and to this day are suited for a wider variety of tasks making them an all around superb special forces unit. This is why I think The SAS really started the special forces tradition. SBS are great too, and a couple of years older.

I have a friend who did some training with several special forces groups, he said the main thing he noticed about special forces was that the instructors would give an insane task that would make normal soldiers laugh and say "no way that can be done" and the Special forces folks would not even flinch and just proceed. TLDR: The can-do attitude is the biggest difference between a special forces person and a regular person.

I served 23 years in the Royal Signals, British Army Communications. I remember a good friend of mine who also served tried for 264 Signal Sqn SAS selection (now 18 Signal Regt). He was the fittest guy I had ever served with, a steam train whilst tabbing. He was rejected twice, first time for an injury and second time for 1 navigational error. He said that there is a good reason the SAS are the best. The other countries they make very little mistakes and it's accepted. Enough said.

@WillSutton Any can apply that's true but you still have to be selected for selection lol. They will look at you and do a few preliminary checks such as your fitness record which must be impeccable. Generally speaking troops outside of the teeth arms are not smashing a 1.5 mile run in under 8 and a half minutes. Outside of the teeth arms I imagine you'd have to be a PTI (PT instructor) to be considered. Most infantry would be accepted with very few questions. Tankies and artillery your probably still Gona have to be a PTI or have a COs recommendation to go as they don't want the regiment to be embarrassed by some idiot just wanting to go for wee bit of fun

You don’t get chosen for selection, you simply apply. Of course when you hand your paper in to apply some of the people in the offices in charge of your squadron or troop may advise you and say their opinion on you joining but ultimately no one can stop you from going on selection. Years ago you had a pre selection phase which was around a week long which basically tested the recruits and made sure they’re fit enough to do selection but I think they’ve scrapped that now.

The "Hills" he refers to are the Brecon Beacons and Elan Valley in south Wales. Aptitude Phase (hill phase) is 4 weeks long. Anyone who's walked the four peaks of the Horseshoe trial of the Brecon Beacons for fun on a Sunday afternoon will no how hard it is. The steep inclines. The insane burning in the legs and lungs that just goes on for hours. Image running over the entire range end to end and back again against the clock in full gear, carrying a 40Ib Bergen and a rifle. Going further and carrying a bit more weigh in the backpack each day, all week, every week until the Long Drag. A final endurance march of 64 km which must be completed within 20 hours. There's not many left after that. Then you've got to do it all again in the jungle of Belize! For 9 weeks!! That's not even half way. Employment training (14 weeks) then Survive, Evade, Resist, Extract (4 weeks). This is why there are only 60 operatives in a Sabre Squadron. They don't make men like this in numbers of 2000!

@@Mpwilson123 Hahaha I'm a big time hiker and trekker with quite a bit of experience in Wales. Set off for 20km in Snowdonia or the Beacons at a strong pace and see how you fair. Hills Phase of selection is 4 weeks in the Brecon Beacons. Day 6 is a 23km route march over the hills carrying 40lbs + rifle, water etc. Week 4 "Test Week" is FIVE timed marches between 23 and 28km (one EVERY DAY) followed by the final march of 64km to be done in 20 hours carrying 60lbs + rifle, food and water. And when I say "timed", imagine a moderate jogging pace. That's what they must maintain non stop over the hills. They are totally alone and have to nav it themselves through day and night. Not even mentioning the extreme weather that always exists over there. And this is just to be considered fit and competent enough to be considered for selection. Do this and see if you're still laughing wee man.

The amount of American references and influence throughout this video, especially the end is ridiculous. Its about the _BRITISH_ special forces, why did I hear the word America mentioned at least 20 odd times within the last 3 minutes alone. Not to mention having chips written on our food instead of crisps, showing British soldiers using American M4's rather than our SA80's we have always used, even depicting us using humvees and whatever these insurgents at 1:00 and 1:52 are, when the British army particularly on home soil uses armoured Land Rovers and MAN SX44's for convoys and transport. These are nitpicks aye, but for the amount of research he has to do he could at least put some effort into the little bits and show our culture some respect rather than just americanising our things he can't be bothered to look up

The reason America is mentioned so much is because #1: nato allies constantly use each other’s equipment, and as the seals have amphibious assault vehicles, the sas uses them because why not, they are allies. #2: task force 88 consisted of international sf units and he went in depth describing the more prolific players that have worked alongside the task force. #3: the last unit that is secret is one of the main ways SAS command gets their intelligence which they need to operate, so it makes sense to include it, regardless if it’s an American asset

I'm in the British Army (not SAS or any special forces and I wouldn't pretend to be). Another thing that sets the SAS and all British SF apart is that you cannot join as a civilian recruit. You must already be a serving member of the armed forces and be recommended. They also don't have to fail many recruits, it just isn't necessary. Most who aren't right for it and fail will buckle and take themselves off long before it gets to a stage where an instructor has to kick them out.

British special forces regularly use M4 weapon systems. And by regularly, I mean it was standard issue for many years

Yes thats right. SAS and SBS use AR16s as standard. Have done for decades, they break down in to small parts to pack in to a rucksack. Stems from the days of the UK army using SLRs which could not be broken down so much.

The only thing is, there are no Female SAS instructors. Also the Seals obviously have more as the US is a much larger country. In my opinion the SAS is the worlds most elite fighting force. Above delta force and the seals. I am going from evidence.

You can't even apply unless you're already serving in the British army with several years experience. That puts the standard into perspective - many of the applicants are already members of elite units, and there are still 100% washout classes. You also give up your rank for the duration of your service with the regiment.

For anyone under the age of 18. Exercise, eat right, play sports, go for 100 percent in every subject, and carry a book with you to read when you are waiting for anything ever. Do not let anyone ever tell you what you can or cannot do. Only your success can dictate that.

I live not too far from where the SAS recruits are tested. I sympathise. Getting around on foot is horrible thanks to the massive and frequent hills you have to climb, let alone doing it in full combat gear for days on end under a time limit. I actually don't know how you achieve that level of physical fitness.
