Even though Americans make up only 4% of the world population, the US holds a staggering 22% of the planet’s imprisoned individuals. Across federal, state, and other prison systems, there are 1.9 million people currently incarcerated in the US.

If American prisons treated their inmates better, there would be fewer repeat offenders. In some cases, your dignity is taken away and no respect is shown. Prisons are places to rehabilitate people, but if you only show fear, violence and the "I don't care if someone hits you" mentality, this is transferred to the inmate and he will act it out on the outside. Yes, many belong in prison, but they are human beings. A little dignity and a little respect works wonders and protects us people who are outside from those who are out of prison to let out their anger.

Actually, it's nearly impossible to control.. inmates know how to tow the line enough to stay within policy when there are eyes or cameras on them. @throwaway67953 күн бұрын
@savagepro9060 Tell that to the ACLU, other human rights organizations.. they can get illegal phones for sure.. but in my state, all inmates are allowed tablets with limited functionality.. but includes the ability to email. They're monitored, but it takes manpower to sift through everything. Then they're also allowed very liberal access to paid facility phones, also monitored by staff. When you attempt to limit their ability to contact the outside world.. there are plenty of organizations ready to sue the state or federal government for violating the rights of the inmates. The argument is that having a connection to friends and family as a support mechanism is vital to their rehabilitation. When in reality, their friends and family very well may be the reason they're in there to begin with.
@mr.pickles58143 күн бұрын
@savagepro9060 as someone who worked in the profession, there is no real way to prevent most of the in prison crime activity, whether it's due to understaffed and/or the fact they still get some basic rights that can't be removed so they utilize those as was to bypass rules and be criminals in prison by extorting other inmates for commissary etc... it depends on security levels also....minimum, medium or max prison all have unique problems.

This is actually fairly decent. I was an officer and sergeant with the Florida DOC for about a decade. My only critique is that in the overwhelming majority of prisons, very few inmates are housed in cells. Cells exist of course, but at least in my experience across many different Florida prisons, inmates are typically housed in open bay dormitories. Basically they're rooms a little smaller than a school gym with rows and rows of bunk beds. Cells are generally reserved for administrative or disciplinary confinement, or close management. Some dorms that house a higher classification of inmate do house them in cells but I only worked at one prison that had more than two dorms like that, and that prison was relatively new in comparison to the others I worked at. It also housed close management and psych inmates.
@DinoPimpКүн бұрын
Working dorms would be a security nightmare. Single cells make for a much more settled unit, and they are much safer for staff and inmates.
@Megaman8880Күн бұрын
@@DinoPimp I get why you would make that assumption, but it's actually not true most of the time. If you have a dormitory with a little less than 300 inmates and they're all housed in cells, the officers in the workstation can not see inside of the cells unless they are out on the floor making rounds. There are no cameras that are viewing the insides of these cells. We made one round per hour based on FDOC policy so the inmates had roughly 50ish minutes between rounds to do drugs and whatever else they'd do in locations we could not observe them. Hypothetically, if you're short staffed and it's just me and you in this dorm, and you're making a round on the floor, and a group of 5 inmates grab you and drag you into one of these cells where I can't see you, you're stuck in this cell with these 5 guys for at best 3 or 4 minutes before I can get you help. Though, more likely, you'd be on your own for twice that time. I never liked working these kinds of dorms because they're actually more dangerous and give the inmates a lot more opportunity to do wrong.
@DinoPimpКүн бұрын
@@Megaman8880 That's a staffing ratio issue more than anything. The rule is where I work is a minimum ratio of 20 inmates to staff for low security, 15 to 1 for high, and 1 inmate to 3 staff for maxi. Staff never work alone on the floor. If we a are short staffed, it is illegal to unlock. If you are in trouble, backup from other units is a minute away at most. In high security, they are generally run into secure yards, with around 10 to 20 inmates to a yard, which frees up the wings for cell searches, and general duties. Low security they are unlocked for around 11 hours. It's an open air central compound with a small grass field perfect for sports, with good view coverage from both the guardroom and cameras. They are generally expected to be engaged in some kind of employment or programme at that security level, so the inmates are generally busy. After lockup they are secure in their own cells. It makes for a safe working environment and a generally safer environment for the inmates.
@Megaman8880Күн бұрын
@@DinoPimp Well, I wish I had worked where you work lol. In the state of Florida, we do not consider any kind of inmate to officer ratios. I have worked a rec. yard with a trainee and no other help with up to 300 inmates on the field. That was just how that particular facility was ran. Working a T-Dorm like the one I described in my prior comment was initially intended to be done with 5 officers, but I have on regular occasions worked it with just myself and a trainee, or a female officer.. The state of Florida is so critically understaffed that the national guard is assisting with that problem at several institutions. Regardless of how short we were though, we were expected to perform as though we had enough people, and if we failed to do so there would be disciplinary actions taken against us. All of this is a component to why I eventually left the FDOC and I now work in a separate area of law enforcement.

Here the nurses were not nicer than the guards lol, it really depends on the nurse and the guard tbh At least half the nurses in the prison I went to did not do their jobs properly and treated prisoners worse than the guards. I almost lost my arm cause the nurses wouldn't treat a huge boil that formed which after a month of being told it was nothing I was forced to pop it myself and then clean out the thick white core within the boil by holding the open wound up to the hot shower for what felt like forever but was probably about 45min-1h. Not the most painful thing I ever experienced but it was EXTREMELY painful especially due to having to consciously prevent myself from moving/jerking my arm at all due to the pain. After I de-cored that boil and sanitized it I was left with a big hole about the size of a US quarter in my arm. It took 3 more months for this boil to actually close up and I was regularly requesting patches for it and because I was concerned about the very likely chance of an INJECTION I was regularly asking for anti-biotics(which they refused to provide), especially since the hole didn't appear to be healing and there was red inflammation surrounding the hole for the entirety of these 3 months. Obviously the inflammation worsened over time but fortunately I was as hygienic as possible and luckily it didn't develop into anything worse. BUT in the last month that the hole was open I began to get very sick to the point where I could only leave my cell about once every 3-4 days and that was usually because the guards that day would force me out for the first couple hours simply cause you have guards who are nice and guards who enjoy riling up prisoners, causing confrontations, and just generally watching prisoners suffer. You would be surprised how that actually describes around half the guards in the prison... cause you have to remember that being a prison guard is basically the highest paying job for people with zero credentials. At least here that is the case. It took me a month to get better but I continued to be sick on and off for weeks after that and still the nurses refused to give me anti-biotics. You have to remember too that the nurses at prisons often can't find work as a nurse anywhere else and prisons are desperate for nurses so they have a very low standard of quality. Despite this there were a handful of nurses who were actually decent human beings and who were very aware of just how badly us prisoners are being treated by the other nurses. I just can't say that all the nurses there were awful cause those few kind ones put would do so much for the prisoners and whenever they were the one who came to the unit that morning or night ALL the untreated prisoners would line up to finally speak to someone who might actually treat them. Unfortunately during my ordeal for those 4 months I obviously didn't encounter a single nurse who would fall into that category and well, that shows just how rare these "good" nurses can be in prison.

Prison is just a different kind of confinement in a universe that doesn’t care either way. Freedom or prison, it’s all the same. They’re just another routine in an indifferent and empty existence. Life itself is a prison.

I've commited a few crimes, mostly stealing toys and candy as a kid, a few cases of cyber bullying, a few cases of hate speech, that sort of stuff, but i haven't really commited any serious crimes. I've never been to prison, and i'll never spend time in prison. To be honest, it's a higher chance i'll become homeless than spend time in the clanker

@@JT5555 and neither do you. No one's getting anyone's sympathy, pal, because everyone commits crime every day, and at least one of those crimes are so bad the result is the death sentence. Everyone does a crime worthy the death sentence at least once a day, whether you don't think tou don't or not, but it's the truth. In the end, i'm at least honest and tells the truth, something you don't know what that is

I'm too autistic to survive in prison, it's the social aspect that scares me. If I could just be put somewhere where I don't have to interact with anyone besides guards, then i'll be fine.
