What is more sensible is making a world where people are less likely to become addicted. That would mean making a world with fewer depressed, anxious, lonely people. Life sentence not necessarily means "all your life in prison". It varies, depending on the charges and the possibility for parole. That's the reason you will sometimes see a criminal serving 2 or more life sentences. In many cases you can appeal the life sentence after 25 years, but that extra 30 years means more time even if you appeal your initial life sentence.
