A lot of people don't know this but there actually was a draft, just wasn't the traditional draft. Many referred to it as the "Back Door Draft" or "Stop-loss". From what I understand it gave the government the ability to involuntarily extend a service member's contract up to their contractually agreed end of service. So rather someone doing a 6 by 2 (6 active years, 2 IRR) they'd be forced to do all 8 active years rather than going IRR
@stephenwilkens31013 жыл бұрын
That's not new. Your example of the 6 years active and 2 years IRR IS what was being called the "backdoor draft." There's never been (at least in the last few decades) a "true" 4 year enlistment that you always heard about on the recruiting commercials. Every enlistment was (and still is) always 8 years- the question was just "how much of that do I do on Active Duty, how much on IRR?" My initial enlistment contract was for "6 years." But, like your example, that was actually 6 years active, 2 years IRR. The IRR is simply this: you no longer have to work for the Army, you no longer receive benefits from the Army, the Army is no longer responsible for you, BUT for those 2 years, your name is on the list of people who will be the first to be called back up in an emergency or because of a shortage of troops. And it's explained to everyone who enlists. Stop-loss is a different thing altogether. Getting "stop-lossed" means you're CURRENTLY on Active Duty, but your unit can't afford to lose you because they don't have a replacement inbound, so they cancel your orders to leave- whether it's "leave the Army" or "leave this base and PCS (Permanent Change of Station) to your next Active Duty unit." A friend of mine was stop-lossed while she was still on Active Duty. She was stationed at Ft. Bragg and about to move to Ft. Lewis. The 82nd came down on deployment orders and her company didn't have anyone to replace her, so they cancelled her PCS orders- they "stopped" themselves from "losing" her. 3 months after the deployment, her orders became active again and she moved to Ft. Lewis. A Draft, by comparison, is when you take someone who is not in military service, has never BEEN in military service, has never been TRAINED by the military, and may not have any intention to ever BE IN military service, select them at random, and press them into military service against their will. No agreement. No warning. No prior contract. Getting reactivate while you're on IRR, or stop-lossed before you get out are both rough things to deal with; but referring to either one as a Draft is GROSSLY inaccurate and misleading.

The name "Afghanistan" is derived from the term "Afghan," which historically refers to the Pashtun people, one of the major ethnic groups in the country. The suffix "-stan" is Persian for "land" or "place," so "Afghanistan" can be translated as "Land of the Afghans." The country has a rich history and cultural diversity, with various ethnic groups, languages, and traditions. ### Reasons to Help the People and Places in Afghanistan: 1. **Humanitarian Needs**: Afghanistan faces significant humanitarian challenges, including poverty, food insecurity, lack of healthcare, and insufficient access to education. Many people, particularly women and children, are in urgent need of assistance. 2. **Impact of Conflict**: Decades of war have devastated the infrastructure, economy, and social fabric of the country. Aid and support can help rebuild communities and provide essential services. 3. **Human Rights**: The protection and promotion of human rights are crucial, especially for vulnerable populations. Supporting initiatives that advocate for women's rights, children's education, and religious freedoms can help foster a more just society. 4. **Regional Stability**: Assisting Afghanistan can contribute to regional stability. A more stable Afghanistan can help reduce the potential for extremism and conflict that can spill over into neighboring countries. 5. **Global Responsibility**: As part of the international community, there is a moral obligation to support countries in distress. Providing assistance aligns with global values of solidarity and humanitarianism. 6. **Long-term Development**: Investments in education, healthcare, infrastructure, and economic development can help create sustainable opportunities for the Afghans, enabling them to build a better future for themselves. 7. **Cultural Richness**: Afghanistan has a diverse and rich cultural heritage. Supporting the preservation of its history and culture, including arts and crafts, can help foster national pride and identity. 8. **Refugee Challenges**: Many Afghans are displaced due to conflict and instability. Providing support can assist in addressing the needs of refugees and internally displaced persons, helping them rebuild their lives. By assisting the people of Afghanistan, the international community can help foster a more peaceful, prosperous, and capable society, while also addressing the immediate humanitarian crises affecting millions.

Afghanistan has a rich cultural and historical heritage, and while it may not be widely recognized for specific inventions in the same way as some other countries, it has contributed to various fields over the centuries. Here are a few notable inventions, innovations, and contributions that can be traced back to Afghanistan or its people: 1. **Kandahar Rosewater**: The production of rosewater from the Damask rose is a traditional Afghan practice that has been cherished for centuries, contributing to culinary and cosmetic uses. 2. **Afghanistan's Historic Influence on Mathematics and Astronomy**: Historically, scholars from the region contributed to mathematics and astronomy, particularly during the Islamic Golden Age when the area was part of thought centers in cities like Balkh and Herat. 3. **The Pashmina Wool Shawl**: Though not an "invention" in the modern sense, the intricate weaving techniques and production methods of Pashmina (cashmere) textiles have their roots in Afghanistan, especially in the region of Kashmir, which historically fell under Afghan influence. 4. **Traditional Medicine**: Afghan herbal medicine, which utilizes a variety of indigenous plants for healing, can be seen as a form of innovation in natural health practices. 5. **Carpet Weaving**: Afghan carpets are renowned worldwide for their artistry and craftsmanship, showcasing unique designs and techniques that have been passed down through generations. While Afghanistan may not have popular modern inventions attributed to it, the country possesses a rich history of cultural heritage, textile arts, and culinary practices that reflect its contributions to global civilization.

U.S. Involvement Containment of Communism: The U.S. was motivated by a desire to contain the spread of communism, following the Truman Doctrine. Supporting the Mujahideen was seen as a way to counter Soviet expansion in the region. Cold War Dynamics: The U.S. viewed its involvement in Afghanistan as part of the larger Cold War struggle against the Soviet Union. The idea was to make Afghanistan "the Soviet Union's Vietnam," drawing them into a costly quagmire. Support for Insurgents: The U.S., along with Pakistan and other countries, provided funding, arms, and training to the Mujahideen fighters. This covert operation was part of the CIA’s "Operation Cyclone," aimed at destabilizing the Soviet presence in Afghanistan.

@cashewnuttel90543 жыл бұрын
No. What the US should do next time they invade a country, and let's be honest it's going to happen again, is get rid of the government officials of said country, and replace them with American officials; put an American governor, put American officials into all government seats, and actually turn the country into a territory of the US. That way should the US pour money into said country the money actually goes into where it is supposed to go, and not into the pockets of corrupt officials. The reason the US failed in Vietnam and Afghanistan is because they relied on the corrupt local government. Also isolate the population who are responsible for giving the enemy food, medicine, money, weapons, and everything else that could drag the war on or worse, cause defeat; move the people into guarded cities, like concentration camps, and people who want to move from one city to the other must have proper documents and will be accompanied by soldiers. The problem is that the US doesn't like it when the world sees them as a full blown imperialist and aggressor, unfortunately, those things are required if you want to win the war, and if you don't want to do those things then better not invade at all.

A American Foreign Legion would take time to built, but there is more than enough people who want to make their way into America to fill its ranks. Even that wouldn't be a permanent solution. Take Mali as a example of French failure to quell insurgency even with their presence there since they established their colonies. Corruption is the 1st thing that needs to be quelled in any government that wants to be functional. It's too late for America to have any major influence on Afghanistan but Iraq needs a complete U-turn before it is too late. Due to Covid-19, corruption, and oil dependence, Iraq is on its way to collapse. No amount of aid, troops, and culture adoption will fix a society whose government is deeply ineffective and corrupt. The people need to rule themselves.
@ovni22953 жыл бұрын
The Space Force is unnecessary because all they did was take Space Command, a well-supported branch of the USAF, and separate it from the support it received. Now it has to rebuild from scratch. Space Command was already doing a good job. We can only hope Space Force gets back on its feet before a space conflict begins.
@stephenwilkens31013 жыл бұрын
@@ovni2295 It's not rebuilding from scratch. They're doing with the Space Force EXACTLY what the Army Air Corp did in 1947. They've taken a well established, well-ish funded piece of one military branch and split it off into its own separate branch so it can better guide its own future separate from the needs of its parent force, and have its own dedicated budget rather than sharing that of its old parent force.

The only thing I would disagree with you on is with Iraq. I'm pretty sure the Iraqi people wouldn't support a democratic country for very long, or anything that would help other democratic nations. They would vote for Sharia laws, and quickly become authortian.

In my opinion, Afghanistan, for nearly almost a decade after our involvement was neglected. As soon as we went to war in Iraq, yeah we did neglect Afghanistan for quite a bit the messed up part was our forces that were there the casualty rates even went higher by that time. The American people literally didn’t hear too much about that. Instead was just a bunch of focus on Iraq. By neglect even shows documentaries, we talk about this war saying it’s a forgotten war.

I totally agree it’s ridiculous how many times America and fellow countries jump into war when instead we should just watch the violence and not give them anything in return. They got to learn the hard way of what war brings to a country. This American withdrawal will just bring another useless war in the near future now that the Taliban feel like they have power and control.

Yep but France lost WW2 and we had to save them. But I won't hold that against the French because they did help the United States gain independence. The reality is the French lost Indochina (Vietnam) before the US was there and we were dragged into that conflict. The US paid for French colonialism. Not to mention the Franco-Prussian war of 1871, the US stayed out of that one. The 7 years war the Napoleonic wars.I don't think the cab driver knows his countries own history because the French didn't have a great track record when it came to warmongering and likely the scene was added for the comedic irony.
