I remember being upstairs doing homework when suddenly I heard my dad shout “Get down here everyone, you’re gonna want to see this!” My whole family went running into the living room wondering why my dad was freaking out over a White House address on TV that was just showing an empty podium. We asked what had happened and with the most dead serious look on his face he said “It’s looking like they might have killed bin Laden” and I just stood there in shock. A few seconds later Obama was on TV confirming the news. We lived in New Jersey when 9/11 happened and my mother started to cry when we learned they had really killed him. People in our neighborhood were banging pots and pans, setting off fireworks, and cheering. Part of me felt bad for being happy about someone dying but another part just felt huge relief. The reason why the helicopter crashed was because during their mock up training in Virginia Beach, they used Chain linked fences to represent the concrete wall around the compound. Helicopter pilot here..Vortex ring state is not caused by weather…It’s caused by a rapid decent with little to no airspeed while under power..The downwash of the rotors starts to get counteracted by the air coming from below by the rapid descent causing vortices to form on the root of the blade moving towards the tip. Vortices destroy lift and regardless of how much power you are pulling you just fall through your own rotor wash...At higher altitudes this can happen fast so a rapid descent with slow forward speeds VRS can form rapidly. Only way to fix it is to get air to flow laterally across the disk but gaining airspeed or doing the Vuichard method ( laterally moving to the side). So coming in fast and flaring aggressively and pulling max power at high altitude probably caused the VRS.

What happened was there were 18-foot high walls surrounding the entire compound. They didn't come in at high altitude. They came in at very low altitude. This is what caused the vortex ring state once the helicopter entered the perimeter of these walls.
@ryanhampson6732 жыл бұрын
Altitude has nothing to do with regarding AGL but MSL can, due to a high DA (Density Altitude) and thinner over all air. (can't remember what the elevation was at the site) Its descent rate and airspeed that get you into VRS. Even if you are level and flare hard and then pull power to slow your speed you can induce the VRS once you get below ETL (Effective Translational Lift) and with a vertical speed above 300 feet per second. Flaring hard the helicopter would think forward airspeed was vertical descent speed because the relative wind is coming from below the rotor disk and it just snowballs fast. Obviously they wanted to come in hot and fast for surprise but that type of flight profile can paint you into a corner. They were lucky the pilot was good enough to be able to salvage the situation somewhat and minimize casualties from the crash.

In 2010, one of my students had to go back to Pakistan, to Abbottabad, where her family were from, to attend a wedding. I had never heard of the place so I asked her what it was like there. She said it was nice, her family were well-connected business people; they had built a palatial house with large grounds, and then she said, 'One of our neighbours could be Osama Bin Laden'. 'That threw me but I said, 'I don't suppose so - he won't be somewhere like that, near ordinary people - he'll be hiding in the hills somewhere.' She never came back to England, and I heard the wedding was hers (she thought it was a cousin's). The rest, as they say, is history.

The biggest issue wasn't doing a joint operation with Pakistan, it was the fall out of of their citizens reaction if they helped on the mission. As they helped a lot more then people realized, but it needed to be done indirectly. For example, there was a medical group who visited the compound and the area around it, that offered medical care. This mission ended up getting details of the interior layout, how many children, women, servants, pictures, etc and it was passed along to the US military via a lot of back channels, but the Pakistan Gov knew what was "happening".

The vortex ring state (VRS) is an aerodynamic condition for helicopters normally generated in nearly vertical or vertical descent when the relative upward air velocity equals the downward induced main rotor flow rate. Basically put, you're flying into your own downwash generated by the rotors. The air temperature doesn't create the vortices.
